How to Change the Fuel Hose on a 1996 Yamaha Wolverine 350

Rubber does not last forever, and on a 1996 Wolverine 350 the fuel hose has now spent decades absorbing engine heat, trail vibration, and whatever blend of gasoline happened to be available. Replacing it is inexpensive and entirely doable at home. This Wolverine is carbureted with a straightforward gravity feed, meaning a petcock underneath the tank shuts the supply off and a single hose carries fuel down to the carburetor. There is no in tank pump and no pressurized circuit, so the depressurizing routine required on a fuel injected quad has no equivalent here.
Why the Rubber Eventually Fails
Fuel hose leaves the factory soft because of plasticizers blended into the compound, and heat is what removes them. Season after season, warm air rolling off the air cooled 348cc single bakes the wall until it is stiff and thin. A hose that no longer flexes cannot cope with the vibration of a big single or the twisting of a frame working through rock gardens and ruts, so hairline cracks appear at the bends and slowly cut deeper.
Two additional factors set the pace. In dry climates the surrounding air pulls moisture out of the rubber, hardening the outer surface well ahead of a machine kept somewhere humid. Ethanol blended pump gas works the opposite direction, drawing water into the fuel and gradually breaking down the inner liner so it softens and starts releasing debris toward the float bowl. Extended time parked with fuel sitting in the line lets both processes run at once, which is why age alone is reason enough to replace the hose on a machine this old.
Assembling What You Need
- Gloves and eye protection
- A drain pan and a sealed, gasoline rated container for captured fuel
- Fuel rated hose matched to the original inside diameter, not oversized
- Fresh spring clips or small worm gear clamps
- Flat blade screwdriver, small sockets, a razor blade, rags, and a bright light
- Line clamping pliers, useful insurance if the aging petcock no longer seals fully
Do not skip the airflow question. Gasoline vapor is denser than air, so it sinks and travels along the floor rather than dispersing overhead, and it collects exactly where pilot lights and battery chargers live. Roll the Wolverine outdoors if the weather allows, or open the shop door completely and set a fan on the concrete pushing air out. Shut off heaters and anything with an open flame before opening a fitting, and keep an extinguisher within arm's reach of where you will be working.
Recognizing a Line That Is Done
Fuel hose failures are rarely sudden. A puddle or damp shadow on the floor under the machine is the most obvious tell, and a lingering gasoline smell in a closed shed runs a close second. Inspect the hose itself with a light: fine cracking, splits, or a chalky gray cast all indicate the rubber has hardened past its useful life. Squeeze the line in several places, since a section that stays creased or feels rigid has lost the flexibility it needs.
Running behavior tells you something too. A Wolverine that bogs on climbs, hesitates coming off idle, or acts like the tank is nearly empty while fuel is clearly present may be drawing air past a cracked hose or pulling through a partially collapsed one. Gravity feed carries no pressure, so leaks weep quietly rather than spraying, and that subtlety is precisely why they are found late. Any seep with the exhaust header nearby justifies parking the machine until the hose is replaced.
Extracting the Aged Hose
Close the petcock and pause for flow to stop. Take off the seat and any fender or tank cover hardware that stands between you and the two hose ends. Slide the drain pan under the carburetor and back out the float bowl drain screw, letting the bowl and most of the hose empty into the pan before you disturb a clamp. That one step keeps nearly all of the fuel off the floor.
Ease the clamps back along the hose, squeezing spring clips open with pliers or loosening screw clamps. Dried varnish usually glues old rubber to the brass barbs, so rock the hose to break that bond rather than levering on the petcock spigot, which cracks more easily than it appears. A truly stuck end comes off cleanly if you slice it lengthwise with a razor and peel it away.
Record the routing before the line is fully free. Being a four wheel drive machine, the Wolverine carries front driveline hardware and extra frame structure near the hose path that a two wheel drive quad does not have, so the factory clips and clearance gaps are worth a photograph.
Joining Up the Replacement Line
Trim the replacement against the old piece so the lengths match. A long hose finds something to rub or drifts into the steering, and a short one loads both fittings sideways for as long as it stays on the machine. Slide each end fully onto its barb until it seats, and install everything dry. Grease, oil, and silicone have no business on a fuel fitting, since lubricant on the sealing surface opens a route for fuel past the clamp and can swell the rubber with time. Warm water for a few seconds is all a stubborn end should need.
Position the clamps just behind the raised bead on each spigot and tighten evenly to snug rather than crushing the hose. Return the line to its original guides so it clears the exhaust, the front driveline, and any sharp edge, and check for a kink where it turns into the carburetor inlet. Nothing in this system can push fuel past a partial restriction, so a pinch becomes a lean condition under load.
Verifying the Repair
Snug the bowl drain screw, open the petcock, and watch both joints for a solid minute as gravity fills the hose. Dry the fittings with a clean rag and inspect again, because a fresh bead of fuel is unmistakable on clean metal. Fire the engine, let it idle several minutes, and give both connections a final look before the bodywork goes back on.
Finish with a quick review of everything else you can see. Make sure the petcock stops flow completely when closed, verify the fuel cap vent breathes so the tank does not draw a vacuum against your new hose, and check any inline filter for restriction. That whole inspection is possible because this Wolverine is carbureted; injected quads mount the filter inside the tank alongside the pump, well beyond the reach of a driveway service.
