Fuel Line Replacement on the 1995 Yamaha Wolverine 350

The Wolverine 350 was built to be ridden harder than a plain utility quad, and the fuel plumbing on a machine that gets ridden that way has a shorter life than the calendar suggests. The 1995 Wolverine is carbureted, fed by gravity from a tank mounted above the engine through a petcock on its underside, and a single rubber hose carries fuel from that valve down to the carburetor. Nothing is pressurized, which means the pressure bleeding and line pinching that a fuel injected quad demands never enters the picture. Close the petcock and the system is safe to open.
Symptoms That Deserve a Closer Look
- A puddle or damp patch of gasoline on the floor after the Wolverine has sat overnight
- A fuel smell that hangs around the machine hours after the engine cooled
- Cracking, crazing, or splitting in the rubber, worst where the hose curves
- A chalky gray surface where the hose used to be black and pliable
- A hard section that keeps its crease when squeezed rather than springing back
- Bogging under load, a stumble off idle, or the engine acting starved with plenty of fuel aboard
A gravity fed line carries no pressure, so failures here seep instead of spraying, and behind the bodywork that can go unnoticed for a long stretch. On a machine ridden aggressively in the woods it is worth a hard look at the hose any time the plastics come off, because a slow drip with the exhaust header nearby is not a small problem.
What Actually Ruins a Fuel Hose
Fuel line depends on plasticizers worked into the rubber for its flexibility, and heat drives them out. Years of warm air coming off the air cooled 348cc single leave the wall firm, then thin, and eventually brittle. Once the hose has lost its give, the vibration of a large single and the flexing of a chassis worked over rocks and roots begin scoring the surface, and each ride pushes those cracks a little deeper.
Two more forces are always in play. Dry, low humidity air pulls moisture out of the hose wall and hardens the exterior years earlier than a damp climate would. Ethanol blended gasoline attacks from within, drawing water into the fuel and gradually breaking down the inner liner until it softens and begins releasing fine material toward the float bowl. A Wolverine that spends long periods parked with fuel in the line experiences both simultaneously, and the outside can still look serviceable when the inside is not.
Setting Up: Parts, Tools, and Ventilation
Lay these out before anything comes apart:
- Rubber or nitrile gloves plus eye protection
- A drain pan and a sealed container rated for gasoline
- Fuel rated replacement hose in the same inside diameter as the original
- New spring clips or small worm gear clamps, or a clamp assortment
- Flat blade screwdriver, a small socket set, a razor blade, rags, and a good light
- Line clamping pliers as a backup, since a petcock this old may weep even when closed
Handle the fuel with the respect it deserves. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air and flows downward, collecting across the floor where furnaces, water heaters, and chargers sit rather than escaping through a window above your head. Ventilate low: work outdoors or with the door fully open and a fan moving air out at floor level. Shut off every pilot light and heat source in the space, avoid hot drop lights, and keep an extinguisher within reach from a kneeling position.
Getting the Old Hose Out
Turn the petcock to off and give the line a moment to stop feeding. Remove the seat and whichever fender or tank cover fasteners block access to the tank outlet and the hose run down to the carburetor. Place the drain pan under the carburetor, then loosen the float bowl drain screw so the bowl and most of the hose empty into it before a single clamp is touched.
Slide the clamps back along the hose at both ends, squeezing spring clips open with pliers or backing off screw clamps. Old rubber usually bonds to the brass barbs with dried varnish, so rock the hose gently to break that seal rather than hauling on the petcock spigot, which is a light casting on a machine of this era. When an end refuses to release, slit it lengthwise with a razor and peel it off the fitting.
Note the routing carefully on the way out. The Wolverine is a four wheel drive chassis, so the line shares space with front driveline hardware and additional frame structure that a two wheel drive quad simply does not carry. Photograph each clip and clearance point while the old hose is still in position and reassembly becomes obvious.
Installing the New Line
Cut the replacement to match the length of the piece you removed. Excess hose will chafe on a frame tube or drift toward the steering, while a short piece keeps constant side load on both fittings. Push each end fully onto its barb until it bottoms out, and assemble it dry. Grease, oil, and silicone stay off fuel fittings entirely, because lubricant on the sealing surface gives fuel a path to creep past the clamp and can swell the rubber over time. A few seconds in hot water softens a stiff end enough to slide on unaided.
Set the clamps just behind the raised bead on each spigot and snug them evenly instead of crushing the hose. Feed the line back through every original guide so it stays clear of the exhaust, the front driveline, and any sharp bracket edge, then sight along it for kinks at the carburetor inlet. With gravity as the only motive force, even a partial pinch turns into fuel starvation on a hard climb.
Sealing Up and Confirming Your Work
Close the float bowl drain screw, open the petcock, and watch both connections for a full minute while the hose fills. Wipe the fittings with a clean rag and look again, since a fresh bead of fuel stands out against dry metal and disappears on a surface that is already wet. Start the engine, let it idle for several minutes, and inspect one last time before the plastics go back on.
Take advantage of the open access while it lasts. Confirm the petcock shuts flow off completely, make sure the vent in the fuel cap breathes so the tank cannot pull a vacuum against your new hose, and check any inline filter for restriction or sediment. Being able to inspect the fuel path end to end is a real benefit of a carbureted Wolverine, since an injected machine keeps its filter inside the tank with the pump where none of that is reachable in an afternoon.
