How to Change the Fuel Line on a 1995 Timberwolf 250 2x4

Follow the fuel from the cap to the carburetor on a 1995 Timberwolf 250 2x4 and you will have counted maybe five components. That simplicity is what makes this repair a good first fuel system job. The machine is carbureted with a plain gravity feed, so the petcock under the tank is your shutoff and there is no pump or pressurized rail anywhere in the picture. Owners of fuel injected quads have to relieve line pressure and pinch the hose before touching a fitting; here the fuel valve does that work.

Tracing the Fuel Route on a Two Wheel Drive Timberwolf

The tank sits above and slightly ahead of the engine. Underneath it, a petcock with on, off, and reserve positions feeds a short rubber hose that drops down the left side into the carburetor inlet, held at each end by a clamp. Inside the carburetor, a float bowl keeps a small reserve of fuel, and a drain screw at the bottom of that bowl lets you empty it on purpose, which is the tidiest way to begin.

Because this is the two wheel drive version, the area around the frame is comparatively open. There is no front differential or front driveshaft to route around, so the hose follows a direct path with fewer clips and clearance points than the 4x4 model requires. That does not change the procedure at all, but it does make the work faster.

What Time Does to Fuel Hose

Fresh fuel line is soft because of plasticizers mixed into the rubber, and heat from the air cooled single slowly drives those out. The wall becomes firm, then thin and brittle, and eventually cannot flex with engine vibration or the working of the chassis over rough ground. Surface checking forms, then deepens, and one day it reaches through.

Two conditions push that along. Dry, low humidity air draws moisture out of the hose wall, hardening the exterior faster than it would harden in a wetter climate. Ethanol blended gasoline attacks from within, pulling water into the fuel and degrading the inner liner so it softens and starts releasing debris toward the float bowl. A quad that sits for long stretches with fuel in the line suffers both at once, and the outside can still look fine while the inside is well past done.

Signals That the Line Needs Replacing

  • A puddle or damp patch of gasoline on the floor beneath the engine
  • Fuel odor that stays with the machine hours after it was last run
  • Cracks, splits, or a chalky gray finish on the hose, worst where it bends
  • A section that feels rigid and holds its crease instead of springing back
  • Dirt caked rings at the fittings, marking seepage that dried repeatedly
  • Bogging under load, an off idle stumble, or the engine acting starved with fuel in the tank

Leaks on a gravity system tend to weep instead of spray, so they hide well behind bodywork. Even a slow drip is worth stopping right away when it lands anywhere near the exhaust header.

Gear Up and Ventilate

Have gloves, eye protection, a drain pan, a sealed gasoline container, replacement hose in the matching inside diameter, new spring clips or small worm gear clamps, a flat blade screwdriver, a small socket set, a razor blade, rags, and a flashlight ready. Keep line clamping pliers handy in case the petcock no longer seals completely when closed, which happens on valves this old.

Now the safety point that actually matters. Gasoline vapor is denser than air, so it sinks and spreads across the floor rather than escaping through a window overhead. Ventilation has to happen down low: work outdoors or with the door fully open and a fan moving air out at floor level. Shut off furnaces, water heaters, and anything else with a pilot light or open element, avoid hot incandescent drop lights, and keep an extinguisher within reach from a kneeling position.

Getting the Old Piece Out

Close the petcock and give it a minute. Remove the seat and any fender or tank cover fasteners blocking the tank outlet and the hose run. Set the pan under the carburetor, then loosen the float bowl drain screw and let the bowl and most of the hose drain into it. Emptying the system first is what keeps fuel off the floor when the clamps come off.

Ease the clamps back along the hose at both ends, squeezing spring clips with pliers or backing off screw clamps. Decades of varnish typically glue the old rubber to the brass barbs, so rock the hose to break that bond rather than levering on the petcock spigot. If either end refuses, slit it lengthwise with a razor and peel it off the fitting rather than risking damage to the valve or the carburetor inlet.

Installing the New Hose and Leak Testing

Cut the replacement to match the original length exactly. Excess hose chafes on the frame or drifts toward the steering, while a short piece keeps both fittings under permanent side load. Push each end fully onto its barb until it bottoms and assemble it dry. No grease, oil, or silicone touches a fuel fitting, because lubricant on the sealing surface creates a path for fuel to creep past the clamp and can swell the rubber over time. Hot water for a few seconds softens a stubborn end enough to slide on.

Position the clamps just behind the raised bead on each spigot and tighten them evenly to snug. Keep the line clear of the exhaust and any sharp edge, and check for kinks at the carburetor inlet since gravity alone cannot push fuel past a restriction. Then close the bowl drain screw, open the petcock, and watch both joints for a full minute. Wipe them dry and look again, start the engine, let it idle several minutes, and inspect once more. While you are there, confirm the petcock shuts off fully and the fuel cap vent breathes freely, easy checks on a carbureted machine where every part of the fuel path is visible rather than buried in the tank the way an injected system hides its filter.
