The fuel path is short, but on a four-wheel-drive utility chassis it threads past hardware that a lighter quad simply does not have, and getting the new line back into its correct route is what keeps it from chafing through in a season.
Mapping the Fuel Path
The 1995 LT-F300F King Quad is carbureted. Gas leaves the tank through a manual petcock at the tank's low corner, runs down a short length of rubber hose, and fills the carburetor's float bowl entirely by gravity. There is no electric pump, no pressurized rail, and no injector in the system.
Drive configuration shapes the routing. Because the King Quad drives all four wheels, a front differential and its driveshaft occupy space a two-wheel-drive machine leaves open, so the factory hose path works around that hardware while staying well clear of the hot exhaust header. Follow the original route and reuse every clip rather than taking a shortcut that looks tidier but puts rubber against a frame tube.
That petcock also defines the procedure. On a fuel-injected quad there is no valve to close, so you pull the pump fuse, run the engine until it stalls to bleed residual pressure, and pinch the hose shut with clamping pliers before separating fittings that are often locking quick-connects rather than plain barbs. Here you turn a valve to OFF — after confirming it actually stops flow, since a petcock seal hardened by thirty years can seep quietly.
What Makes a Fuel Hose Fail
Rubber fuel hose is flexible because of plasticizers blended into the compound, and heat cycles slowly drive those additives out. Once the hose stiffens it stops absorbing the vibration a big air-cooled single sends through everything bolted nearby, and faint surface checking deepens into cracking, typically at a bend or right where a clamp compresses the wall. Dry climates hasten this by pulling moisture out of the rubber, leaving a chalky texture that splits readily.
Ethanol-blended pump gas attacks from the opposite side. Alcohol draws water into the fuel and slowly breaks down the inner liner, and a King Quad left sitting for months with gas standing in the line degrades internally the whole time. The typical result is a hose brittle on the outside and shedding material on the inside, feeding fine debris toward the carburetor jets.
Symptoms Worth Watching For
- Gasoline odor around the machine that persists long after shutdown
- A damp streak or puddle beneath the tank or on the skid plate
- Fine cracking, a chalky surface, or a hardened section you can feel by pinching
- Bogging pulling a hill, hesitation off idle, or a lean stumble at steady throttle
- Seepage that shows only with a full tank, when gravity head pressure peaks
- A dried, dust-caked ring at either fitting
Tools and Working Safely
Lay out fuel-rated gloves, an approved sealed container for drained gasoline, a shallow catch pan, gasoline-rated hose matched to the original inside diameter, a fresh set of correctly sized clamps, a flat-blade screwdriver, a small socket set, a sharp utility blade, and plenty of clean rags.
Gasoline vapor is heavier than air and pools at floor level, so ventilation near the ground is the only ventilation that matters — open the door wide or roll the quad outside rather than relying on a high window. Extinguish water heater pilots, shut off shop heaters, put anything that sparks away, disconnect the battery negative cable, and let a hot exhaust cool completely. Keep fuel-soaked rags in a closed metal container outdoors.
Draining Down and Pulling the Hose
Turn the petcock to OFF and let the engine idle until it stalls, which empties most of the float bowl. If the carburetor has a bowl drain screw, crack it over the pan and let the remainder out. Slide the pan under the hose run and drape a rag beneath the first fitting you intend to open.
Push each clamp well back along the hose before disturbing the joint. Decades of fuel varnish bond hose to barb, so twist the hose to break that grip instead of pulling straight and hard. If it refuses to release, slit it lengthwise with a sharp blade and peel it off the fitting — you are discarding the hose anyway, and snapping the petcock spigot is the one outcome that turns a twenty-minute job into a much larger project. Photograph the clips and guides before the line is completely free.
Fitting the New Hose and Checking It
Cut the replacement to the original length. Extra hose sags toward the driveline or rubs a frame tube, and a short piece pulls at both fittings each time the engine rocks on its mounts. Seat each end fully over its barb past the raised bead, working it on dry. Grease, oil, and silicone never belong on a fuel fitting, because lubricant on the sealing surface gives gasoline a path to creep out and can carry contamination downstream into the carburetor. Dip a stiff hose end in hot water for thirty seconds and it will slide on without a struggle.
Position clamps just behind the bead on each fitting and tighten uniformly. Snug seals; an overtightened screw clamp bites into soft rubber and creates a fresh leak. Return the hose to its factory guides so it stays away from the cylinder head and the front drive components.
Open the petcock and watch both joints for a solid minute with the engine off. Gravity brings fuel to the fittings immediately, so a poor connection announces itself right away. Wipe everything dry with a clean rag and inspect again, then start the engine and check at idle under good light, focusing on the upper side of each fitting where a slow weep likes to hide. Take a short low-speed lap and look once more after the engine has heat-cycled.
Close things out by inspecting the petcock's internal screen and any small inline filter while access is easy. On a carbureted 1995 King Quad those parts sit in the open where cleaning or replacement takes minutes, unlike an injected machine that keeps its filter inside the tank as part of the pump assembly. New hose behind a plugged screen still starves the carburetor, so address both and the LT-F300F will feed dependably for many seasons.
