Twenty-plus years is a long service life for a piece of rubber that spends every day soaked in gasoline. On a 1995 Quadrunner 250, the hose feeding the carburetor is one of the last original components most owners think to replace, and it is easily the cheapest insurance against being stranded. What follows is the whole job, from understanding the failure to the final leak check.

Picking the Correct Replacement Hose

Match the new line to the original by inside diameter, not by how it looks alongside the old piece. A hose one size large will never seal on the barb regardless of clamp torque, and one size small will split when you force it over the fitting. Insist on hose rated for gasoline; general-purpose tubing swells, softens, and delaminates when fuel sits against it. Buy new clamps at the same time, since a clamp that has been compressed on hardened rubber for decades has taken a permanent set and will not grip fresh, soft hose evenly.

Understanding Why the Old One Gave Up

Fuel hose depends on plasticizers to stay flexible, and those compounds leave the rubber steadily over the years. Heat cycling from the air-cooled 250 pushes that along, and once the wall goes rigid it can no longer conform around a barb to seal. Vibration then works hairline cracks into the bends, which is always where failure starts.

Where the machine lives matters. Dry, low-humidity climates pull moisture from the hose wall and harden it from the outside inward, aging a line years faster than a wetter region would. Ethanol-blended pump gas does the opposite kind of damage, absorbing water and breaking down the inner liner until it softens and sheds material toward the carburetor. Fuel left sitting through months of inactivity deposits gum and varnish that restricts the passage while the hose exterior still looks presentable.

Fuel System Confirmation for This Machine

The 1995 LT-F250 is carbureted and gravity fed. A manual petcock at the tank controls the flow, a short hose runs down to a Mikuni carburetor, and nothing in the circuit is pressurized. There is no electric fuel pump, no injector, and no rail to bleed. Turn the petcock lever to off and fuel genuinely stops, which is why this job avoids everything a fuel-injected quad requires: no pump relay to pull, no cranking to relieve pressure, and no self-locking quick-connect fittings to release with a special tool. Both ends here are plain barbs with clamps.

The carburetor's float bowl drain screw is another convenience of the carbureted layout, letting you dump residual fuel into a pan under control. And where an injected machine tucks its filter inside the tank alongside the pump, anything filtering fuel on this Quadrunner sits inline and fully serviceable.

Warning Signs to Watch For

  • Fuel staining or a small puddle beneath the tank after the machine has been parked overnight
  • A strong gasoline smell around the quad long after shutdown
  • Surface cracking that widens when you flex the hose into a tighter bend
  • Hose that feels stiff and glassy, or soft and puffy where it meets a fitting
  • Bogging under acceleration, a lean stumble at higher rpm, or an engine acting starved with fuel still in the tank

Tools, Prep, and Working Around Gasoline

Have this ready before you begin: gloves, eye protection, a sealed fuel-rated container for drained gas, a catch pan, a flat-blade screwdriver, needle-nose pliers, a sharp razor knife, and a stack of clean rags, along with the hose, clamps, and any inline filter you are replacing.

The safety note here is not boilerplate. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air, which means it sinks to the floor, collects there, and spreads sideways along the ground instead of dispersing upward. Work outside or with the garage door fully open and air moving low across the space. Keep every ignition source out of the area — no flames, no shop heater, no hot halogen work light, no grinding. Disconnect the negative battery cable before opening any fitting so a slipped tool cannot arc, and keep the drain container capped rather than letting an open pan of fuel evaporate beside you.

Removal, Installation, and the Final Check

Close the petcock and run the engine until it dies, using up what remains downstream. Slide the pan under the carburetor, open the float bowl drain screw, and let the bowl empty. Take off the seat and any panel obstructing the hose run, then trace the full length and note the clips and guides holding it. With no front differential or driveshaft in this 2WD frame, the path is short and unobstructed.

Walk the old clamps back along the hose with pliers, twist each end a quarter turn to break the varnish bond, and pull it off the barb. If the rubber has effectively glued itself to a fitting, slit it lengthwise and peel it away rather than pulling harder — the petcock spigot is soft and bending it means dropping the tank. Cut the new hose to the same length as the old piece, slide the clamps on loose, and push each end fully onto its barb until it bottoms against the shoulder. Assemble dry, with no grease, oil, or silicone anywhere near the fittings, because lubricant on a sealing face gives fuel a channel to weep along and can carry contamination into the carburetor. Hot water is the right way to soften stiff new rubber. Set each clamp just behind the raised bead and tighten evenly without cutting the wall, orient any inline filter's flow arrow toward the carburetor with its weight supported, and route the line through its factory guides clear of the exhaust and cylinder head.

Tighten the bowl drain, Reconnect the battery, and open the petcock. After a minute, wipe both joints with a clean rag and watch for fuel returning. Start the engine, idle it for several minutes, and inspect again while the machine vibrates, since running conditions expose seeps a static check misses. Blip the throttle, sweep a dry rag beneath the hose where you cannot see, and confirm it stays clean. Once both connections hold dry, the bodywork can go back on and the LT-F250 is ready for work.
