A weeping fuel line will strand a 1995 Bayou 220 2x4 just as surely as a dead battery, and it will do it while smelling up the shed in the meantime. This model is carbureted, fed by gravity from a tank mounted above the engine. A manual petcock controls the flow, a short piece of rubber hose carries it down, and the carburetor float bowl holds the working supply. No fuel pump pressurizes anything, which makes replacing the hose a genuinely approachable repair for anyone with intermediate mechanical comfort.

Working the Old Hose Off the Fittings

Begin with the petcock turned to OFF. Take the seat off and move whatever bodywork obscures the run between the tank and the carburetor. Position a drain pan under the engine, then back out the float bowl drain screw so the carburetor empties into it rather than onto the cases when you disconnect the hose.

Loosen the clamp at the carburetor barb and slide it well back along the hose. Rubber that has spent decades carrying gasoline effectively glues itself to brass, so break the varnish bond with a gentle twist rather than pulling straight and hard. If the hose stays locked on, slit it lengthwise with a sharp blade and peel it off the fitting. You are throwing the hose away regardless, and a cracked carburetor inlet turns a simple afternoon into a parts hunt. Handle the petcock end the same way, with a rag ready for the fuel still standing in the tank neck.

The Shutoff Valve Nobody Appreciates

That petcock is why this job stays simple. Carbureted Bayous let you close a valve and stop fuel flow at will, then work on a dry line. Fuel-injected quads have no petcock at all, hold pressure in the lines from an in-tank pump that has to be bled down before anything is opened, and often use self-locking plastic quick-connect couplers instead of a barb with a clamp. Your 220 keeps things mechanical: brass barbs, ordinary clamps, and a float bowl drain you can actually reach.

How Age Ruins a Fuel Hose

Fuel line is manufactured soft thanks to plasticizers blended into the rubber, and those compounds do not stay in the hose wall indefinitely. They migrate out steadily, leaving a tube that has gone stiff and glassy. Heat radiating from the air-cooled cylinder speeds that along, and once the rubber cannot flex, ordinary vibration and the odd bump against a frame tube start opening cracks. Dry, low-humidity country accelerates the whole sequence because the outer wall gives up moisture continuously.

Ethanol-blended pump gas attacks from the opposite side. Alcohol in the fuel draws water into the system and slowly breaks down the inner liner, and that is at its worst on a quad that sits unridden with fuel in the tank. The liner goes soft and gummy, then sheds material downstream toward the float needle. It is entirely possible to have a hose that looks fine externally while it is disintegrating inside, which is why age matters more than appearance here.

Symptoms and What They Mean

  • Gasoline odor around the machine that you cannot trace to an obvious source
  • A stain or fresh puddle on the floor under the engine after the quad has sat overnight
  • Visible cracks, a chalky haze, or hard brittle spots you can feel by pinching the hose
  • A grimy dust ring at either barb, left by fuel that has seeped and evaporated repeatedly
  • The engine bogging, stumbling, or running lean under throttle while idle stays normal, pointing to restricted flow

What to Have Ready, and How to Stay Safe

The parts and tool list is short: gloves, a drain pan, a sealed fuel-rated container, hose in the correct inside diameter, new clamps, a flat-blade screwdriver, a small socket set, a sharp knife, and rags. Buy the hose a little long and trim it to the removed piece.

The safety note is not filler. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air and settles at floor level, gathering right where pilot lights, shop heaters, and floor outlets sit. Work outside or with the door raised fully so the low air moves, keep sparks and flame away from the area, and disconnect the battery before opening the fuel system. Wear gloves, because gasoline strips skin oils in seconds and leaves your hands cracked for days.

Installing the New Line and Checking Your Work

Lay the old hose next to the replacement and cut to the same length. Excess hose finds a frame rail to chafe on or hangs toward the header, and both of those simply recreate the leak you set out to fix. Dip each end in hot water briefly to soften it, then push it fully onto its barb until it bottoms against the shoulder of the fitting.

Install everything dry. Grease, oil, and silicone spray all ease assembly and all leave a film that fuel can eventually migrate through, turning a properly tightened clamp into a slow weep. Rubber seals against clean brass better with no help at all. Place the clamps just behind the raised bead on each barb and tighten them evenly, snug but not crushing, since aged rubber takes a permanent set under too much clamping force. Thread the hose back through its factory guides. This 2WD chassis gives the line a short, direct path, while a 4x4 model has to negotiate front differential hardware and additional frame clearance points, so your routing stays uncomplicated as long as the hose stays clear of the cylinder head and exhaust.

Close the bowl drain, turn the petcock to ON, and watch both connections as the line fills. Blot each joint with a clean dry rag and read the cloth rather than trusting a glance at dark rubber. Start the engine, let it idle for several minutes, and inspect again while everything is vibrating, because that is when a marginal joint gives itself away. Switch the petcock to RESERVE for a moment so the lower tank port gets tested. Last, with the system already empty, clean or replace the petcock screen and any small inline filter element. That is an advantage carbureted owners have, since fuel-injected quads keep their filter inside the tank with the pump module, untouched during a hose replacement.
