Gasoline is the one fluid on a 1994 King Quad 4x4 that deserves genuine caution, and this repair is short enough that it is tempting to skip the setup. Do not. Ten minutes of preparation turns a fuel line swap into an uneventful job instead of a mess you clean up for the rest of the afternoon.

Preparing the Space and Handling Fuel

Gasoline vapor is heavier than air. It sinks and accumulates near the floor, which means a window above the bench does nothing while an open door and moving air clear the space entirely. If the weather allows, push the King Quad outdoors and work there. Before anything comes apart, extinguish water heater pilots, shut down shop heaters, put away grinders and torches, and disconnect the battery negative cable. Let the engine and exhaust cool fully — fuel dripping onto a hot header is precisely the situation worth avoiding. Wear gloves, since gasoline strips the oils out of skin on contact, and keep fuel-soaked rags in a closed metal container outdoors rather than stacked on the bench.

  • Nitrile or rubber gloves rated for fuel handling
  • An approved sealed container for drained gasoline, plus a shallow pan for drips
  • Gasoline-rated hose matched to the original inside diameter
  • A fresh set of clamps in the correct size, screw type or spring clip
  • Flat-blade screwdriver and a small socket set for bodywork in the way
  • A sharp utility blade for trimming new hose and slitting off the old
  • A generous supply of clean rags

Line-clamping pliers are optional here. This King Quad has a working petcock, so you shut fuel off at the source. Those pliers are mandatory equipment on a later fuel-injected quad specifically because no shutoff valve exists.

The King Quad's Fuel Delivery

The 1994 LT-F300F is carbureted. A manual petcock at the low corner of the tank controls flow, and fuel travels a short run of rubber hose into the carburetor's float bowl by gravity. There is no electric pump and nothing under pressure. Contrast that with an injected machine, where you would pull the pump fuse, run the engine down to relieve pressure, pinch the line closed, and possibly release a locking quick-connect coupler instead of loosening a clamp. Test that your petcock's OFF position actually stops flow first, because a valve seal hardened by three decades can pass fuel slowly.

Why the Line Wears Out and What to Look For

Fuel hose is pliable thanks to plasticizers blended into the rubber, and heat cycles drive those additives out over time. Once stiff, the hose can no longer absorb the vibration a big air-cooled single sends through the chassis, so surface checking becomes cracking at bends and under clamps. Dry climates accelerate it by pulling moisture from the hose wall, and ethanol-blended gas works the inner liner from the other side, particularly during months when the machine sits with fuel standing in the line.

The symptoms follow that pattern: a lingering fuel smell, a damp patch or puddle under the tank, visible cracks or a chalky surface, and an engine that bogs or runs lean under load. Weeping that appears only with a full tank is a strong gravity-feed clue, since head pressure at the fittings peaks when the tank is topped off. A ring of dried dust at a barb marks where fuel has seeped and evaporated over months.

Freeing the Aged Hose

Close the petcock and let the engine idle until it dies, which empties most of the float bowl. If the carburetor has a bowl drain screw, open it over the pan and release the rest. Slide the pan under the hose run and lay a rag beneath the first fitting you plan to open.

Work each clamp well back along the hose before disturbing the joint. Old fuel varnish bonds the hose to the barbs, so twist to break that seal rather than pulling hard on a brittle petcock spigot. If it holds fast, slit the hose lengthwise with a blade and peel it away. Breaking the petcock outlet is the one mistake that turns this quick repair into a much larger job.

Trace the routing as the line comes free. Four-wheel drive on the King Quad puts a front differential and driveshaft in space a two-wheel-drive quad leaves open, so the factory hose path threads around that hardware and stays clear of the exhaust. Record every clip and clearance point before the old hose is fully out.

Installing and Leak Testing

Cut the new hose to the original length exactly. Excess material sags toward moving parts or rubs a frame tube, and a short piece pulls at both fittings whenever the engine shifts on its mounts. Push each end fully onto its barb past the raised bead, and do it dry. Grease, oil, and silicone stay off fuel fittings entirely, because lubricant on the sealing surface gives fuel a route to creep out and can wash contamination into the carburetor. Warm a stiff hose end in hot water for half a minute instead of forcing it.

Set clamps just behind the bead on each fitting and tighten evenly. Snug is right; crushing the hose wall creates the leak you came to eliminate. Route the hose back through its factory guides, well away from the cylinder head and the front drive components.

Turn the petcock to ON and watch both joints for a full minute with the engine off. Gravity pressurizes the fittings immediately, so a bad connection reveals itself fast. Wipe dry with a clean rag, inspect again, then start the engine and look a third time at idle under good light, paying attention to the upper side of each fitting where slow seepage tends to hide. Ride slowly for a few minutes and take a final look after a heat cycle.

Before packing up, inspect the petcock's internal screen and any small inline filter. On a carbureted 1994 King Quad these are accessible in the open where cleaning or replacement is trivial, unlike an injected machine that seals its filter inside the tank with the pump. A fresh hose behind a plugged screen still starves the carburetor, so handle both and this LT-F300F will run the way it should.
