Kawasaki built this model carbureted with a gravity feed system, so the fuel travels from a high-mounted tank through a manual petcock, down a short rubber hose, and into a carburetor float bowl. There is no pump, no pressure, and nothing electronic in the path. Everything you need is a wrench, a pan, and a plan.

Laying Out the Tools

  • Rubber or nitrile gloves and a good supply of rags
  • A low drain pan plus a sealed container approved for gasoline
  • Hose in the correct inside diameter for the petcock and carburetor barbs, bought slightly long
  • A set of new clamps, since the originals have been on there thirty years

  • A sharp utility blade for cutting the new hose and, if needed, splitting the old one

Handling Gasoline Without Drama

This is the part worth reading twice. Gasoline vapor is denser than air, so it does not rise and disperse, it sinks and gathers around your feet. That puts it right at the level of a water heater pilot light, a shop heater, or a floor outlet. Work outdoors or with the overhead door fully open so the low air actually moves, and keep grinders, drop lights with hot bulbs, and open flame out of the space entirely. Disconnect the battery before you open the fuel system so nothing in the starter or lighting circuit can spark. Wear the gloves too, because gasoline pulls the natural oils out of skin fast.

Why This Bayou's Fuel System Is Forgiving

A carbureted Bayou gives you something modern quads do not: a real shutoff valve. The petcock threads into the bottom of the tank with ON, RESERVE, and OFF, so closing it genuinely stops the flow. A fuel-injected machine has no petcock, holds residual pressure from an in-tank pump that must be relieved before anything comes apart, and frequently uses self-locking plastic quick-connect fittings rather than a barb and clamp. Your 220 also has a float bowl drain screw, letting you empty the carburetor deliberately instead of discovering its contents on your forearm.

Understanding Why the Old Hose Failed

Rubber fuel line hardens with age whether the quad gets ridden or parked. The plasticizers that keep it soft slowly leave the hose wall, and the tube that results is stiff and brittle rather than flexible. Heat coming off the air-cooled cylinder accelerates that, and constant engine vibration then opens cracks in rubber that can no longer give. Dry climates compound the problem by drawing moisture out of the outer surface year after year.

From the inside, ethanol-blended fuel does its own damage. The alcohol content attracts water and slowly attacks the hose liner, and the effect is worst on a machine that sits for months with gas in the system. The liner turns gummy and sheds particles downstream toward the float needle, so a hose can look acceptable outside while it is falling apart within. On any Bayou of this vintage, age alone is reason enough to replace the line.

Signs to Watch For

Symptoms usually escalate in a familiar order. A fuel smell shows up first, because a slow seep evaporates off warm metal before it can drip. Next you find a damp streak on the hose, then a stain or puddle on the floor under the engine after the quad has been parked overnight. A caked ring of dust at either barb is dried fuel residue and a reliable tell.

Then there is how the engine behaves. A hose with a swollen or collapsing liner restricts flow, so the 220 idles fine and bogs or stumbles under throttle, acting as though it is nearly out of gas. When a carburetor cleaning does not fix a bogging complaint on a machine this old, the hose feeding it is the next place to look.

Removal, Installation, and Verification

Close the petcock, remove the seat and any panel in the way, and slide the pan into position. Open the float bowl drain screw and let the carburetor empty. Loosen the clamp at the carburetor barb, slide it back up the hose, then twist the hose a quarter turn to break the varnish bond before pulling it off. If it will not release, slit it lengthwise with the blade and peel it away rather than levering on the fitting. Repeat at the petcock end with a rag ready. Because this is a 2WD chassis, the run is short and unobstructed, unlike a 4x4 quad that routes its line around front differential castings and extra frame clearance points. Cut the new hose to match the old one, no longer. Soften the ends in hot water and press each fully onto its barb until it seats against the shoulder. Assemble dry, keeping grease, oil, and silicone completely away from the fittings, since any lubricant film gives fuel a path to migrate out from under a clamp. Set the clamps just behind the bead on each barb and tighten evenly, snug rather than crushed. Return the hose to its original guides and confirm it clears the cylinder and header.

Close the bowl drain, open the petcock, and watch both joints as the line fills. Blot each with a dry rag and read the cloth for darkening. Start the engine, idle it several minutes, and inspect again while it vibrates, then cycle the petcock through RESERVE to test the lower port. Since the system is drained anyway, clean or replace the petcock screen and any inline filter now. Fuel-injected quads keep their filter inside the tank with the pump, out of reach during a hose swap, so use the access your Bayou gives you.
