Recognizing and Replacing a Worn Fuel Line on a 1993 Suzuki LT-F300F King Quad 4x4

A 1993 King Quad 4x4 that bogs on a climb or leaves a spot on the shed floor is often blamed on the carburetor when the actual culprit sits a few inches upstream. Learning to read the symptoms of a failing fuel hose saves a lot of unnecessary teardown on this machine.
The Symptoms, and What Each One Means
- A puddle or damp patch beneath the tank — the hose has split or a fitting has let go
- A strong fuel smell that lingers after shutdown, often the first sign before anything drips
- Visible cracking or a chalky, checked surface, usually worst at a bend
- A hose that feels hard and crunchy when pinched instead of soft and springy
- Bogging under load or hesitation off idle, which suggests restricted or interrupted flow
- A dried, dust-caked ring at a barb, which is evidence of long-term slow seepage
One clue is specific to this machine's layout. Because the King Quad feeds by gravity, pressure at the fittings is greatest with a full tank, so a pinhole may stay dry at a quarter tank and start weeping as soon as you fill up. A leak that tracks with fuel level is essentially confirmed.
Carbureted With a Manual Shutoff
The 1993 LT-F300F King Quad is carbureted. Fuel exits the tank through a manual petcock at the low corner, drops through a short rubber hose, and enters the float bowl by gravity. Nothing in the circuit is pressurized and there is no pump to disable, so turning the petcock to OFF isolates the whole system.
That is a real convenience relative to a fuel-injected quad. Those machines have no petcock, so the same job starts with pulling the pump fuse, running the engine until it stalls to bleed pressure, and pinching the hose closed with clamping pliers, often followed by releasing a self-locking quick-connect coupler rather than loosening a clamp. Confirm your petcock genuinely holds in OFF before you count on it, because a hardened internal seal at this age can seep.
What Degrades the Rubber
Fuel hose stays flexible because of plasticizers blended into the compound, and heat cycles slowly drive them out. As the hose stiffens it loses the ability to absorb vibration from a big air-cooled single, and light surface checking works into genuine cracks at bends and beneath clamps. Dry climates advance the process by drawing moisture out of the hose wall, leaving a glassy, chalky surface.
Ethanol-blended gasoline attacks from the inside. Alcohol pulls water into the fuel and gradually breaks down the inner liner, and a King Quad that sits for months with fuel standing in the hose keeps degrading the entire time. Hard outside, softening inside, and shedding fine debris toward the carburetor jets is the usual condition of an untouched original line on a machine this old.
Getting Set Up
Have fuel-rated gloves, an approved sealed container for drained gasoline, a shallow catch pan, gasoline-rated hose matched to the original inside diameter, a fresh set of correctly sized clamps, a flat-blade screwdriver, a small socket set, a sharp utility blade, and clean rags on the bench before you start.
Ventilation is not a formality. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air and settles at floor level, so a window above the bench moves none of it while an open door with air flowing through clears the area. Work outdoors when you can. Extinguish water heater pilots and shop heaters, put grinders away, disconnect the battery negative cable, and let a hot engine and exhaust cool completely. Fuel-soaked rags go into a closed metal container outside.
Breaking the Fittings Loose
Close the petcock and let the engine idle until it stalls, which empties most of the float bowl and cuts down on spillage. If the carburetor has a bowl drain screw, open it over the pan for the remainder. Slide the pan under the hose run and drape a rag beneath the first fitting.
Push each clamp well back along the hose before disturbing the joint. Decades of varnish bond the hose to its barbs, so twist the hose to break that grip rather than pulling straight and hard. When it will not release, slit it lengthwise with a blade and peel it off the fitting — the hose is scrap regardless, and a snapped petcock spigot is the one failure that turns a small repair into a large one.
Note the routing as the hose comes free. The King Quad's four-wheel-drive layout places a front differential and driveshaft in space a 2WD quad leaves open, so the factory path threads around that hardware and keeps clear of the exhaust header. Photograph the clips and guides before the line is completely out.
New Hose, Clamps, and Verification
Cut the replacement to the original length. Extra material sags into the driveline or chafes on a frame tube, while a short piece strains both fittings every time the engine rocks on its mounts. Seat each end fully over its barb past the raised bead, working it on dry. Grease, oil, and silicone have no place on a fuel fitting, since lubricant on the sealing surface gives gasoline a path to creep out and can carry contamination into the carburetor. A thirty-second dip in hot water softens a stubborn hose end.
Place clamps just behind the bead on each fitting and tighten uniformly. Snug seals properly; an overtightened clamp cuts into soft rubber and starts a leak of its own. Return the hose to its factory guides so it stays away from the cylinder head and the front drive components.
Open the petcock and watch both joints for a full minute with the engine off. Gravity puts fuel at the fittings immediately, so a poor connection gives itself away right away. Wipe dry with a clean rag, look again, then start the engine and inspect at idle under good light, focusing on the upper side of each fitting where a slow weep hides. Take a short low-speed lap and check once more after a heat cycle.
Finally, inspect the petcock's internal screen and any small inline filter while access is good. On a carbureted 1993 King Quad those parts sit in the open and are easy to clean or replace, unlike an injected machine that houses its filter inside the tank with the pump. New hose ahead of a plugged screen still starves the carburetor, so handle both and the LT-F300F will deliver fuel reliably.
