Changing Out the Fuel Line on a 1993 Honda TRX300FW 4x4

There is a good argument for replacing the fuel hose on a 1993 TRX300FW before it gives you a reason to. This 282cc four-wheel-drive utility quad is carbureted, so the entire fuel circuit is a tank under the front bodywork, a manual petcock, one piece of rubber, and the carburetor — and that piece of rubber is the only consumable in the group. On a machine of this vintage it has been in service far longer than any hose was designed to last.
What Happens Inside Aging Rubber
Fuel line is soft because of plasticizers blended into the compound during manufacturing. Heat drives those additives out, and with the line running near an air-cooled cylinder this quad has delivered thousands of heat cycles to it over the decades. The hose turns rigid, loses the elasticity that let it flex with engine movement, and develops fine surface checks that eventually become splits. Low humidity accelerates all of it by drawing moisture out of the hose wall, which is why quads that spent their lives in dry country often have line that fractures the moment you try to move it.
Simultaneously, ethanol-blended pump gasoline attacks the bore. Ethanol is hygroscopic, so it draws water into the fuel, and that blend is more aggressive toward period rubber compounds than the gasoline available when this machine was new. Fuel left standing through long idle stretches also deposits gum and varnish inside the line, restricting flow and creating loose particles headed for the carburetor jets.
Signs Worth Acting On
Because fuel moves by gravity, a compromised hose leaks any time the petcock is open, running or parked. Look and smell for:
- A gasoline odor around the front of the quad that persists after the engine has cooled
- Fresh drips or a dried stain on the ground beneath the engine
- Surface crazing, a chalky gray cast, or hard spots you can feel by pinching the hose
- A collar of dust glued to a fitting by fuel that seeped and evaporated repeatedly
- Bogging under load, a lean stumble on throttle, or the engine acting empty with fuel in the tank
That last symptom indicates restriction rather than leakage, and it is easy to misread as a carburetor problem. Fuel-injected quads throw the same drivability complaints, but leaks on those machines frequently atomize and evaporate at the breach, so the puddle clue that makes a carbureted diagnosis simple is absent.
Gearing Up and Respecting the Fuel
Stage gloves in nitrile or rubber, replacement gasoline-rated hose in the original inside diameter, new clamps in the factory style, an approved fuel container, a shallow drain pan, a flat-blade screwdriver, needle-nose pliers, a sharp razor blade, sockets for the bodywork, penetrating oil for seized fasteners, rags, and a flashlight. Ventilation is the safety point that genuinely matters. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air, so it settles at floor level and drifts toward water heater pilots, shop furnaces, and motors near the ground. Do this outdoors if you can, or open the overhead door completely and shut off open flames in the building. Wait until the engine and exhaust are cool to the touch, keep the fuel container capped between pours, and wipe up spills rather than letting them evaporate in an enclosed space.
Taking the Old Hose Off Cleanly
Turn the petcock to off. That single valve is your entire shutoff procedure on a carbureted machine, and it is the reason this job is easier than on a fuel-injected quad, which has no petcock — there you would either pinch the line closed with clamping pliers or pull the pump fuse and crank the engine until it stalls to bleed off pressure.
Remove the seat and the plastic tank cover for unobstructed access, using penetrating oil on any fastener that fights you. Slide the pan under the carburetor and open the float bowl drain screw to release fuel sitting downstream. Move both clamps well back on the hose, twist each end at the barb to break the varnish grip, then pull straight off. Keep the screwdriver away from the fittings, because the petcock spigot and carburetor inlet mar easily and a marred barb weeps forever after. Old hose usually comes off best slit lengthwise with a razor and peeled away. Record the routing before it is out: this is a 4x4, so the line threads past front differential hardware and additional frame structure that a two-wheel-drive quad never has to accommodate.
Installing the Replacement
Cut the new hose to the same length as the original, no longer. Extra slack lets it sag toward the cylinder, chafe on a frame tube, or wander into the front driveline area on a four-wheel-drive chassis; too short and both fittings sit under constant tension. Slide each end onto its barb dry, bottoming it out so the retaining bead is entirely inside the rubber. Nothing goes on the fitting beforehand — grease, oil, and silicone all give fuel a channel to creep along and can carry into the float bowl. A few seconds in hot water softens a stubborn end safely.
Position new clamps just behind the bead at each connection and tighten evenly to firm, not crushed, since an overtightened clamp deforms the hose and creates its own leak. Restore the line to its original guides so it clears the exhaust header and stays out of the way of front driveline movement.
Final Checks and Reassembly
Close the float bowl drain screw, open the petcock, and watch both joints for a full minute. On a gravity system a bad connection shows itself almost at once. Blot each fitting with a clean dry rag, pause, and blot again to separate a genuine seep from fuel left behind during removal. Start the engine, let it idle for several minutes, then inspect one more time with the hose warm and vibrating.
While the bodywork is still off, remove the strainer screen inside the petcock and rinse it clean. Years of tank sediment plus the crumbs shed by the deteriorating hose collect there, and a plugged screen is the most common reason a quad continues to starve after a fresh line goes on. Direct access to that screen is one of the advantages of a carbureted setup; fuel-injected models place their filter inside the tank with the pump, where no hose replacement will address a restriction. With both joints dry, reinstall the cover and seat and your 1993 TRX300FW is ready to work again.
