Fuel hose is the one component on a 1993 TRX300 Fourtrax that is guaranteed to have outlived its usefulness, no matter how well the machine was cared for. Rubber ages whether the quad is ridden hard or parked in a barn. Fortunately this 2WD Fourtrax is carbureted and gravity fed, with a manual petcock under the tank and clamped barbs at both ends of a single visible hose, which puts the entire job within reach of basic hand tools.
Confirming What You Are Working With
Lift the seat, pull the left side cover, and the layout explains itself. The petcock threads into the bottom of the tank with ON, OFF, and RES positions and a sediment screen tucked behind the valve body. One hose drops from the valve outlet to the carburetor inlet, held by a clamp on each barb. A separate vent hose serves the tank, and it deserves attention because a plugged vent starves a gravity system just as convincingly as a bad line.
The distinction from a modern injected quad matters here. Injected machines carry a pressurized circuit fed by an in-tank pump, so they need the pump fuse pulled and residual pressure bled before anything is opened, and their fuel filter usually lives inside the tank where it cannot be serviced on the visible line. This Fourtrax has none of that. Closing the petcock is the entire shutdown, and everything in the fuel path can be inspected by eye.
Where the Deterioration Comes From
Two separate processes work on the same piece of hose. Heat from the air-cooled cylinder bakes the plasticizers out of the compound over decades of heat cycling, and the rubber that remains is stiff enough to crack at every bend and behind every clamp. Dry, low-humidity climates accelerate that hardening, and a machine parked in the open collects ultraviolet damage on top of it.
Ethanol-blended fuel attacks the inside. Left standing through a long layup, it draws moisture into the system and degrades the inner liner, leaving the bore soft and gummy while the exterior continues to harden. Whatever flakes off travels directly to the float bowl and the jets. A hose can pass a casual glance and still be shot, so on a 1993 model, calendar age is the deciding factor.

- A pool of fuel or a dark wet patch under the engine after the quad has been parked
- Strong gasoline smell that will not clear from a closed garage
- Fine cracking, chalky texture, or hardened sections detectable by pinching the hose

Because nothing pressurizes this system beyond gravity, a hose collapsed on the inside restricts flow and leans the mixture without ever dripping. Treat those running symptoms as fuel line evidence, not carburetor evidence, until the hose has been ruled out.
Prep, Tools, and Ventilation
Lay out nitrile gloves, eye protection, an approved fuel container, a wide catch pan, gasoline-rated hose in the original inside diameter, new clamps, a flat-blade screwdriver, needle-nose pliers, sockets for the bodywork, a razor knife, a scrap length of hose for the bowl drain, and plenty of rags.
Ventilation is the part not to shortcut. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air and settles at floor level, right where water heater pilots, shop heaters, and extension cords tend to live. Work outdoors or with the garage wide open and get air moving low to the ground. Kill every spark source in the area, let the exhaust cool completely before you reach past it, keep a rag over any open fitting, and pour drained fuel only into a sealed container.
Removal, Fitting, and Leak Testing
Shut the petcock and confirm the flow actually stops, since a valve this old can weep past its internals. Drain the tank if it does. Run the scrap hose from the float bowl drain into the pan and open the screw to empty the bowl, which spares you a spill when the lower fitting releases. Slide both clamps back, twist each hose end to break its varnish bond, and pull it clear. A hose fused to a barb should be slit lengthwise and peeled rather than levered. On this 2WD chassis the path is short and open, without the front differential hardware and extra crossmembers that complicate routing on 4x4 versions.
Cut the new hose to the original length so it follows the same easy curve, then push each end on dry until it bottoms against the fitting shoulder. Keep grease, oil, and silicone spray away from the barbs entirely, because a slick sealing face gives fuel a route past even a well tightened clamp. Hot water softens a stubborn hose end enough to slide it home. Place the clamps just behind the raised bead on each barb and snug them until the hose will not rotate by hand, no further.
Close the bowl drain, open the petcock, and let the Fourtrax sit for five minutes with a dry rag under both joints. If nothing shows, start the engine and check again while it idles, because vibration exposes marginal connections. Before the bodywork goes back on, clean the petcock sediment screen. It catches exactly the debris a deteriorating hose sheds, and a clogged screen will reproduce the fuel starvation you just fixed.
