How the Fuel Line Comes Off and Goes Back On a 1992 Suzuki LT-F250F Quadrunner 4x4

Before you touch a wrench on a 1992 Quadrunner 4x4, it helps to picture where the fuel actually travels. The route is short and simple, but knowing it in advance tells you what to expect at each fitting and keeps gasoline in the pan instead of on your forearm.
Tracing the Fuel Path
This Quadrunner is carbureted. Gas leaves the tank through a manual petcock mounted at the tank's low corner, runs down a short length of rubber hose, and enters the carburetor's float bowl entirely under gravity. There is no electric pump anywhere in the circuit and no residual pressure to bleed off, which is the practical difference between this machine and a later fuel-injected quad. On an injected model there is no petcock at all, so you clamp the hose closed with pliers, kill the pump, relieve pressure, and often deal with locking quick-connect couplers instead of simple barbs and clamps.
The petcock here typically gives ON, RESERVE, and OFF. Test that OFF genuinely stops flow before you commit, because a valve with a hardened internal seal after thirty-plus years can seep quietly.
Drive configuration shapes the route slightly. Because this is a 4x4, the front differential and its driveshaft occupy space a two-wheel-drive chassis leaves open, and the factory hose path threads around that hardware while staying well away from the exhaust header. Keep the original routing.
Why the Hose Wears Out
Fuel hose relies on plasticizers to stay flexible, and those additives migrate out over years of heat cycles. As the rubber stiffens it stops absorbing the vibration an air-cooled single generates, and surface checking turns into real cracks — usually at a bend or right where a clamp compresses the wall. Arid climates speed this up by drawing moisture out of the rubber, leaving a hose that feels hard and chalky.
Ethanol-blended fuel does its damage from the inside. Alcohol attracts water and slowly breaks down the inner liner, and a quad that sits idle for months with gas standing in the hose keeps degrading the whole time. That combination gives you a line that is brittle outside and shedding material inside, and the debris ends up in the carburetor jets.
Signs the Line Is Due
- A gasoline smell around the machine that never quite fades
- A damp streak or small puddle under the tank area
- Fine cracks, a chalky surface, or a hard spot you can feel by pinching
- Bogging under load, hesitation on hills, or a lean stumble at steady throttle
- Seepage that shows only with a full tank, when gravity head pressure peaks
- A dried, dust-caked ring at either barb
Tools and a Genuine Safety Note
Gather gloves rated for fuel, an approved container for drained gas, a shallow drain pan, gasoline-rated hose in the original inside diameter, fresh clamps, a flat-blade screwdriver, a small socket set, a sharp blade, and plenty of clean rags.
Gasoline vapor is heavier than air and settles at floor level, so ventilation low to the ground is what counts. Open the door fully or roll the quad outside. Shut off pilot lights and shop heaters, pull the battery negative cable, and let a hot engine cool before you start. Store fuel-soaked rags in a closed metal container outdoors, never in a pile on the bench.
Getting the Old Hose Off Cleanly
Turn the petcock to OFF and let the engine idle until it dies, which empties most of the float bowl and reduces what can spill. If your carburetor has a bowl drain screw, open it over the pan to release the remainder. Slide the pan under the hose run and lay a rag beneath the first fitting.
Slide each clamp back along the hose before you disturb the joint. Old varnish glues the hose to the barbs, so twist it to break that bond rather than pulling straight and hard. If the hose refuses to release, slit it lengthwise with a blade and peel it off the fitting. The petcock spigot is fragile with age, and breaking it converts a quick repair into a much larger job. Photograph the clips and clearance points before the line is fully out.
Installing the New Line and Confirming It Is Dry
Cut the replacement to the same length as the original. Too much hose sags toward moving parts or rubs a frame tube; too little pulls at the fittings as the engine rocks on its mounts. Seat each end fully over its barb, dry. Grease, oil, and silicone stay off fuel fittings entirely — lubricant on the sealing surface gives gasoline a route to creep past the clamp and can wash contamination into the carburetor. If the hose is stiff, warm the end in hot water for half a minute.
Place the clamps just behind the raised bead on each fitting and tighten them evenly, firm rather than crushing. An overtightened screw clamp cuts into soft rubber and creates a leak of its own. Return the hose to its factory guides so it clears the head and the front driveline.
Open the petcock and simply watch both connections for a minute with the engine off. Gravity feed pressurizes the joints immediately, so a bad fit gives itself away right away. Wipe everything dry, inspect again, then start the engine and look a third time at idle with good light, checking the upper side of each fitting where a slow weep tends to hide. Ride slowly for a few minutes and take a final look after a heat cycle.
While you are in there, pull and inspect any small inline filter and the screen inside the petcock. On a carbureted 1992 LT-F250F these are serviceable right out in the open, unlike an injected quad that buries its filter inside the tank with the pump assembly. A new hose behind a plugged screen still delivers poor flow, so address both and the Quadrunner will run the way it should.
