This quad is carbureted and gravity fed through a manual fuel valve, so there is no pump to depressurize and nothing electrical to disconnect first.

The Root of Most Fuel Line Failures

Hose gives out from chemistry, not use. The plasticizers that keep the rubber pliable slowly evaporate from the material, and heat cycles from the air cooled engine push that loss along every time the machine runs. Soft hose turns hard and glossy, then cracks at the bends and quits gripping its barbs. Dry regional air compounds it by drawing residual moisture out of the hose wall until nothing flexible remains.

Working the other direction, ethanol blended pump gas pulls water vapor from the air, and that mixture degrades the inner liner during the months a worKing Quad sits idle. A hose can look acceptable on the outside while its liner softens, swells, and sheds material toward the carburetor jets.   • Dust caked residue rings at the fittings where seeping fuel evaporated

The running complaints usually beat the visible leak, since a hairline crack lets the hose draw air in rather than push fuel out. That leans the mixture and puts additional heat into an air cooled engine, so it is worth acting on promptly rather than riding around it for another season.

Getting Oriented Under the Seat

The fuel valve mounts beneath the tank with ON, OFF, and reserve positions, and a small strainer screen behind the outlet traps sediment before it reaches the hose. One length of rubber leaves that outlet and drops to the carburetor inlet, clamped at both ends with a clip supporting the middle. Because this is a 4x4, the front differential and its supporting frame structure sit nearby, so the hose can take a slightly longer path with one extra clearance point than the same platform in two wheel drive form. Photograph the routing before you disturb it, and remember the carburetor has a float bowl drain screw underneath.

The Teardown

Turn the valve to OFF, remove the seat and any panel blocking access, and slide the pan under the carburetor. Back out the float bowl drain screw and let the bowl empty completely before opening a single connection, which captures most of the fuel that would otherwise spill.

Push both clamps well back along the hose. Fuel varnish glues old rubber to brass, so break that bond with a gentle quarter turn at the barb rather than a straight pull, then ease the hose off with steady pressure and a rag catching the trickle. When an end refuses to release, run the knife down the hose lengthwise and peel it away in two pieces. Prying on a fitting this old is how a simple hose job becomes an expensive one. Free the valve end the same way, work the old hose out past the front drive components, and note each clip as it clears the frame.

Fitting the New Hose and Confirming the Seal

Cut the replacement to match the length you removed. A long line loops toward moving parts and wears through against a frame edge, while a short one keeps both barbs under tension whenever the engine rocks on its mounts. Slide each end fully onto its fitting until it stops at the shoulder, and assemble everything dry. Grease, oil, and silicone give fuel a channel to migrate along under the clamp and add nothing to the grip, so keep every lubricant off the fittings. Hot water for a few seconds handles a stiff hose end.

Place the clamps just behind the raised bead on each barb so they cannot walk off, then tighten evenly until the hose stops rotating in your hand and go no further. Overtightening a worm gear clamp cuts into fresh hose and creates the leak you were trying to prevent. Route the finished line back through its original clip with clearance from the exhaust and the front driveline.

Open the fuel valve but leave the engine off for a minute while gravity refills the bowl. Wipe both joints with a clean dry rag, wait, and look for fresh wetness. When they stay dry, start the engine, let it idle to operating temperature, and inspect once more while the chassis vibrates. Finish with a slow lap and a last look before the bodywork returns. Since the tank area is already open, rinse the strainer screen at the valve outlet and confirm the tank vent breathes freely, because either restriction starves the carburetor exactly the way a collapsing hose does.
