The LT-F300F King Quad arrived as Suzuki's heavy-duty utility flagship, with a dual-range transmission and a hard-working four-wheel-drive system. Thirty-plus years on, the driveline usually outlasts the rubber, and the fuel hose feeding the carburetor is one of the first things a new owner should replace.
Confirming the King Quad's Fuel Setup
The 1991 LT-F300F is carbureted. Fuel leaves the tank through a manual petcock mounted at the tank's low corner, drops down a short length of rubber hose, and fills the carburetor's float bowl entirely by gravity. There is no electric pump, no pressurized rail, and no injector on this machine.
That valve is what makes the job approachable. Servicing a line on a fuel-injected quad means pulling the pump fuse, cranking until the engine stalls to bleed off residual pressure, and pinching the hose shut with clamping pliers, since no petcock exists to close — and the fittings there are frequently self-locking quick-connects rather than plain barbs. Here you simply turn the valve to OFF, though it is worth verifying that OFF actually stops flow before you rely on it. Internal petcock seals harden over three decades and can seep quietly.
Why the Hose Eventually Splits
Rubber fuel hose stays supple because of plasticizers blended into the compound, and every heat cycle drives a little more of that out. Once the hose has stiffened it can no longer absorb the vibration a big air-cooled single puts into everything nearby, so faint surface checking deepens into real cracking, typically at a bend or right where a clamp compresses the wall.
Climate plays a part. In dry regions, low humidity draws moisture out of the rubber and hose hardens noticeably faster than in a humid area. Ethanol-blended gasoline then attacks from the inside, pulling water into the fuel and slowly breaking down the inner liner — a process that continues quietly through every month the King Quad sits with fuel standing in the line. The result is a hose brittle outside and shedding material inside, feeding debris toward the carburetor jets.
Signs the Line Needs Attention
- A gasoline smell around the machine that never quite fades
- A wet patch or puddle beneath the tank or on the skid plate
- Visible cracks, a chalky surface, or a hardened section you can feel by pinching
- Bogging under load, hesitation pulling a hill, or a lean stumble at steady throttle
- Seepage that shows up only with a full tank, when gravity head pressure is highest
- A dried, dust-caked ring around either fitting
Shop Supplies and Fuel Handling
Lay out fuel-rated gloves, an approved sealed container for drained gasoline, a shallow catch pan, gasoline-rated hose matched to the original inside diameter, a fresh set of correctly sized clamps, a flat-blade screwdriver, a small socket set, a sharp utility blade, and clean rags.
Gasoline vapor is heavier than air and collects at floor level, so ventilation down low is what protects you — open the door wide or roll the King Quad outside rather than trusting a window above the bench. Extinguish water heater pilots, shut down shop heaters, put grinders and torches away, disconnect the battery negative cable, and let a hot engine and exhaust cool fully before you start. Store fuel-soaked rags in a closed metal container outdoors.
Removing the Original Line
Close the petcock and let the engine idle until it stalls, which empties most of the float bowl. If the carburetor has a bowl drain screw, crack it over the pan and let the remainder out. Slide the pan under the hose run and drape a rag beneath the first fitting you plan to open.
Push each clamp well back along the hose before disturbing the connection. Decades of fuel varnish bond the hose to its barbs, so twist the hose to break that grip instead of pulling straight and hard. When it refuses to release, slit it lengthwise with a blade and peel it off the fitting — the hose is scrap anyway, and snapping the petcock spigot is the one mistake that turns this repair into a much larger job.
Follow the routing carefully as the line comes free. The King Quad's four-wheel-drive layout puts a front differential and driveshaft in space a two-wheel-drive quad leaves open, so the hose has a defined path around that hardware and away from the exhaust header. Photograph every clip and guide before the old line is out.
Installing the New Hose and Verifying It
Cut the replacement to match the original length. Excess hose sags toward moving parts or chafes on a frame tube, and a short piece strains both fittings each time the engine rocks on its mounts. Seat each end fully over its barb past the raised bead, working it on dry. Grease, oil, and silicone never belong on a fuel fitting, because lubricant on the sealing surface gives fuel a path to creep out and can carry contamination downstream into the carburetor. Dip a stiff hose end in hot water for thirty seconds and it will slide on easily.
Position the clamps just behind the bead on each fitting and tighten uniformly. Snug seals; an overtightened screw clamp bites into soft rubber and creates its own leak. Return the hose to its factory guides so it stays clear of the cylinder head and the front drive components.
Turn the petcock to ON and watch both joints for a full minute with the engine off. Gravity pressurizes the fittings immediately, so a poor connection announces itself right away. Wipe everything dry with a clean rag and inspect again, then start the engine and check at idle under good light, paying attention to the top side of each fitting where a slow weep likes to hide. Take a short low-speed lap and look once more after a heat cycle.
Finish by inspecting the petcock's internal screen and any small inline filter while access is easy. On a carbureted 1991 King Quad those parts sit in the open where cleaning or replacement is quick, unlike an injected machine that seals its filter inside the tank with the pump. New hose behind a plugged screen still starves the carburetor, so address both and the LT-F300F will feed dependably.
