This 282cc four-wheel-drive utility quad is carbureted, meaning gravity moves fuel from a tank under the front bodywork through a manual petcock and down a single rubber hose to the carburetor.
Gathering What the Job Requires
Stage everything at the machine before you open the fuel system:
- Rubber or nitrile gloves and safety glasses
- Replacement gasoline-rated hose in the original inside diameter
- New clamps in the factory style — the originals on a quad this old are usually corroded and not worth reusing
- A sealed, approved fuel container and a shallow drain pan
- Flat-blade screwdriver, needle-nose pliers, a fresh razor blade, and sockets for the fender hardware
- Penetrating oil for seized bolts, rags, and a flashlight
Then address the workspace. Gasoline vapor is denser than air, sinks to the floor, and travels toward whatever ignition source is down there — a water heater pilot, a shop heater, an extension cord junction. Roll the quad outside if weather allows, or open the overhead door completely and shut off any open flame in the building. Let the engine and exhaust cool to the touch, because an air-cooled header holds heat long after shutdown. Keep the fuel container capped except while pouring, and mop spills instead of letting them evaporate indoors.
What Time Does to Rubber
The hose on a 1990 machine has had decades to break down. Plasticizers keep fuel line soft, and heat cycling from the nearby cylinder drives them out permanently. The result is rubber that has gone rigid, cannot absorb engine vibration, and cracks first on the surface and eventually all the way through. Low ambient humidity makes it worse by wicking moisture out of the hose wall, which is why quads in dry regions can have hose that crumbles when handled.
Modern fuel adds a second front. Ethanol-blended gasoline pulls in water, and the mixture is harsher on the older rubber compounds this quad was built with than the fuel of its era. Fuel standing in the line during long idle stretches also lays down gum and varnish, restricting flow and freeing particles that migrate toward the carburetor. Any hose of this age deserves replacement on principle rather than after a failure.
Recognizing the Warning Signs
A gravity-fed system leaks whenever the petcock is open, so evidence accumulates even in storage. The first indication is usually a gasoline smell around the front of the machine that persists after everything cools. Next comes a wet patch or dried stain on the ground under the engine. With a flashlight, inspect the hose for surface crazing, a chalky cast, hard sections you can feel by pinching, and dust cemented to a fitting by fuel that seeped and dried repeatedly.
Performance issues complete the picture. When flow is restricted, the float bowl cannot keep up and the engine bogs under load, stumbles lean when you open the throttle, or behaves as though it were out of gas with fuel still in the tank. On fuel-injected quads those same complaints arise, but leaks there tend to atomize at the breach and never leave a puddle behind.
Removing the Failed Section
Close the petcock. On this carbureted TRX300FW that single valve is your complete shutoff procedure, unlike an injected machine with no petcock where you would clamp the hose closed with line pliers or pull the pump fuse and crank until it stalls to relieve pressure. Take off the seat and the plastic cover over the tank so the run from petcock to carburetor is fully visible, using penetrating oil on any fastener that resists.
Slip the drain pan beneath the carburetor and back out the float bowl drain screw so the trapped fuel comes out on your terms. Slide both clamps well back along the hose. Twist each end at the barb to break the varnish grip, then pull it straight off — prying with a screwdriver gouges the petcock spigot or carburetor inlet, and a gouged barb never seals cleanly again. Hose this old usually comes off best when you slit it lengthwise and peel it. Because this is a four-wheel-drive chassis, the line shares space with front differential hardware and extra frame members, so photograph the routing and every clip before the old piece is out.
Seating New Hose Correctly
Cut the replacement to match the original length precisely. Excess slack lets the hose lean against the cylinder, chafe on the frame, or drift toward the front driveline on a 4x4; too little leaves both barbs permanently strained. Push each end on dry until it bottoms out with the bead fully covered. Apply nothing to the fittings — grease, oil, and silicone create a leak path along the barb and can wash into the float bowl. If the hose is too stiff, a few seconds in hot water fixes that.
Install new clamps just behind the bead on each fitting and tighten them evenly, firm rather than crushing. Return the line to its factory guides so it clears the exhaust header and stays out of the way of front driveline movement.
The Leak Check That Matters
Tighten the float bowl drain screw, open the petcock, and simply watch both joints for a solid minute. On a gravity system a bad connection weeps right away. Wipe each fitting with a clean dry rag, pause, and wipe again to separate a genuine seep from leftover fuel. Then fire the engine, let it idle several minutes, and give both ends a final inspection with the hose warm and vibrating.
Finish by pulling the strainer screen in the petcock and rinsing it. Decades of sediment plus the crumbs from the old hose collect there, and a clogged screen is the usual reason a quad still starves after a fresh line goes on. That screen being serviceable is a carbureted benefit; fuel-injected machines house their filter inside the tank with the pump, untouched by any hose replacement. With both joints proven dry, reinstall the bodywork and put the TRX300FW back in service.
