The 1990 TRX300 Fourtrax is carbureted, which means gravity does the work of a fuel pump, a manual petcock under the tank controls flow, and the hose between the two is a plain length of rubber held by clamps at each end. There is no pressurized rail to bleed down and no in-tank pump assembly hiding the filter, so a rider with ordinary hand tools can do this job start to finish in an afternoon.

Understanding the Layout on This Fourtrax

Lift the seat and pull the left side cover and the whole path becomes obvious. The petcock threads into the underside of the tank and typically offers ON, OFF, and RES positions, with a sediment screen sitting behind the valve body. From the valve outlet, one hose drops down to the carburetor inlet spigot, secured with a clamp on each barb. A separate small vent hose runs from the tank cap area, and it matters more than most owners realize, because a plugged vent will starve a gravity system just as effectively as a kinked fuel line.

This is a 2WD machine, so the run along the frame is short and open. Owners moving over from a 4x4 Fourtrax will notice the absence of front differential hardware and extra crossmembers that force a more roundabout routing on those models.

What Kills a Fuel Hose

Two processes work at the same time from opposite sides. Heat from the air-cooled 282cc single, plus decades of heat cycling, bakes the plasticizers out of the rubber until it goes stiff and glassy, and a stiff hose cracks wherever it bends or wherever a clamp holds it under load. Dry climates accelerate that hardening, since low humidity pulls moisture out of the hose wall, and a quad parked in the open collects sun damage on top of it.

From the inside, ethanol-blended gasoline left sitting through a long layup absorbs water and degrades the inner liner, turning the bore soft and gummy. The debris that flakes loose travels straight to the float bowl and the jets. Since even the newest 1990 Fourtrax is well past thirty years old, treat the hose as a wear item with a fixed lifespan rather than something to inspect and reuse.

Reading the Warning Signs

  • A puddle or dark stain of fuel on the floor beneath the engine after a night of sitting
  • A persistent gasoline smell around the machine, most noticeable in a closed garage
  • Fine cracking, a chalky surface, or hard spots you can feel by pinching the hose along its length
  • Bogging under load, a stumble off idle, or behavior that mimics an empty tank while fuel remains
  • Varnish rings or dust caked at either fitting, showing fuel has been weeping past the clamp

The running symptoms deserve particular weight on a gravity fed quad. With no pump to push through a restriction, a hose that has collapsed internally quietly leans out the mixture, and riders often spend weeks inside the carburetor chasing what turns out to be a two dollar piece of rubber.

Prep Work and Fuel Safety

Collect gloves, eye protection, an approved fuel container, a wide drain pan, gasoline-rated hose in the original inside diameter, fresh clamps, a flat-blade screwdriver, needle-nose pliers, sockets for the bodywork, a razor knife, a short piece of scrap hose for draining the bowl, and plenty of rags. Then deal with ventilation honestly. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air and settles at floor level, so open the garage fully or work outdoors and move air across the ground rather than overhead. Kill every ignition source in the space, including shop heaters and pilot lights, and let the exhaust cool before you reach past it.

Removal, Installation, and the Leak Check

Shut the petcock and confirm it actually stops flow, because an aged valve can seep in the OFF position. Drain the tank if it does. Run the scrap hose from the float bowl drain into your pan and open the screw to empty the bowl, which keeps the lower connection from dumping when you free it. Slide both clamps back, twist each hose end to break the varnish bond, and pull it off the barb. If a hose has fused itself on, split it lengthwise and peel it away rather than levering on the fitting.

Cut the new hose to the original length so it follows the same relaxed curve without sagging onto the cylinder or stretching at either barb. Push each end on dry until it seats against the shoulder, and use nothing slick to help it, since grease or oil on a sealing face defeats the clamp and creates a slow leak. Warm water softens the hose enough to slide on. Set the clamps behind the bead on each fitting, snug them evenly, and return the hose to its original clips well clear of the header.

Close the bowl drain, open the petcock, and walk away for five minutes with a dry rag laid under each joint. If the rag stays dry, start the engine and check again while everything is warm and vibrating. Finish by cleaning the sediment screen behind the petcock, since it captures the debris an old hose has been shedding, and a clogged screen will reproduce the exact fuel starvation you just eliminated.
