A 1989 Big Bear 350 4x4 that stumbles under throttle or leaves a faint gasoline smell in the shed is usually telling you about its fuel hose. This is a carbureted quad with a manual fuel valve under the tank and gravity handling delivery, so the hose between valve and carburetor is the whole fuel supply. Reading the symptoms correctly saves you from tearing into the carburetor when a two dollar piece of rubber is the actual culprit.
Sniff Test and Visual Check
Run through this list before you assume anything else is wrong:
- A wet spot or slow drip beneath the frame after the machine has been parked with the valve open
- Gasoline odor that clings to the storage area with nothing spilled
- Fine cracking, a chalky gray surface, or a section that feels hard and slick rather than springy
- Bogging when the throttle opens, hunting at steady speed, or the engine dying as though it ran out of gas
- Dried residue rings at either fitting, left behind where fuel seeped and evaporated
- A carburetor bowl that drains overnight and turns the morning start into a long crank
Notice that most of those are running complaints rather than leaks. An aged hose with a hairline crack pulls air into the fuel column instead of dripping fuel out, and the lean mixture that follows loads extra heat into an air cooled engine. Any single item here justifies pulling the hose and looking at it end to end.
How Dry Air and E10 Break Down Hose
Two processes work against the hose simultaneously. From the outside, the plasticizers blended into the rubber slowly evaporate away, and heat cycles from the engine speed that departure along. Flexible hose becomes hard and shiny, then splits at its bends and stops sealing on the barbs. In arid country the effect arrives sooner, since dry air draws residual moisture out of the hose wall and leaves rubber with no give.

Before You Loosen Anything

- New clamps sized to the hose

- A drain pan and a sealed container rated for gasoline
- Screwdriver, pliers, a fresh utility blade, and rags
- Sockets for the seat and side cover
Ventilation matters more than most people credit. Gasoline vapor is denser than air, so it sinks and travels along the floor toward pilot lights, heaters, and electrical connections at ground level. Roll the quad outside if weather permits, or open the shop door completely and put a fan low, moving air away from the machine. Kill anything with a standing flame, avoid a hot bulb work light, keep an extinguisher within reach, and dry fuel soaked rags out in the open.
Where the Line Runs on a Four Wheel Drive Chassis
The fuel valve gives you ON, OFF, and reserve settings, with a small strainer screen behind the outlet to trap tank sediment. A single hose leaves that outlet and drops to the carburetor inlet, clamped at each end and supported by a clip along the way. Since this Big Bear is a 4x4, the front differential and the extra frame structure it requires occupy space nearby, and the hose can follow a slightly longer path with one more clearance point than the same platform in two wheel drive form. Photograph the routing before you disturb it, then use the float bowl drain screw beneath the carburetor to empty the bowl into your pan.
Breaking the Old Connections
Set the valve to OFF, remove the seat and any blocking panel, and drain the float bowl first. Slide both clamps well back along the hose so nothing interferes with the fittings. Give the hose a gentle quarter turn at each barb to break the fuel varnish that has bonded it to the brass, then draw it off with steady, even pressure while a rag catches whatever runs out.
Never pry at a stuck fitting. Slit the hose lengthwise with the utility knife and peel it away in two halves instead, which leaves the barb intact on a machine where replacement fittings are not a casual purchase. Take the valve end apart the same way, then work the old hose out past the front drive components, noting each clip as it clears. Keep the removed piece to measure against the new one.
New Line In, Then Prove It Dry
Cut the fresh hose to the same length as the original. Extra hose sags toward moving parts and chafes through eventually; a short piece keeps both fittings loaded every time the engine rocks on its mounts. Push each end fully onto its barb until it bottoms against the shoulder, and assemble everything dry. Grease, oil, and silicone give fuel a path to creep out along the barb surface and do nothing for the grip, so keep them entirely away. A few seconds in hot water softens a stiff hose end enough to slide on without force.
Place the clamps just behind the raised bead on each fitting and tighten evenly until the hose no longer rotates in your hand. Stop right there, because a worm gear clamp cranked down hard bites the wall and creates the next leak. Feed the finished line back through its original clip, well clear of the exhaust and the front driveline.
Open the fuel valve and leave the engine off for a minute while gravity refills the bowl. Wipe both joints with a clean dry rag, wait, and check for fresh wetness. When both hold, start the machine, let it idle to operating temperature, and inspect again with everything vibrating. Take a slow lap, shut down, and give the fittings one last look before the bodywork returns. While the tank area is open, rinse the strainer screen and confirm the tank vent breathes freely, since either blockage starves the carburetor in exactly the way a collapsing hose does.
