How to Change the Fuel Hose on a 1989 LT-F250 Quadrunner

The first hint usually arrives through your nose. You walk into the shed, catch a whiff of gasoline that should not be there, and find nothing obviously wrong. That smell is often a fuel hose beginning to weep at a fitting or through a hairline crack on a 1989 Quadrunner 250, and it is the cheapest warning you will ever get. Acting on it beats discovering the problem when the engine dies two miles from the truck.
Reading the Warning Signs
A failing supply hose gives up gradually, and the symptoms are easy to spot once you know what you are looking at:
- A wet ring or small puddle on the floor under the left side of the tank after the machine has sat overnight
- Gasoline odor lingering around the Quadrunner well after the engine has cooled
- Fine cracks that open when you flex the hose, or a chalky white cast on the outer surface
- A hose that feels hard as a pencil when pinched, or conversely feels soft and puffy near a barb
- An engine that idles fine but bogs the moment you ask for throttle, leans out at higher rpm, or feels like it is running dry with fuel still in the tank
Dust caked into a damp ring at a fitting is another tell. Fuel seeps, evaporates, and leaves behind a dirty halo that marks the exact spot the hose has stopped sealing.
Confirming the Fuel System on This Machine
Your 1989 LT-F250 is carbureted, fed by gravity through a manual petcock at the tank into a Mikuni carburetor. No electric pump exists in this system, and the line never holds pressure. That makes shutoff simple — the petcock lever stops flow outright. If your experience is with fuel-injected quads, the routine of pulling a pump fuse, cranking the engine to bleed pressure, and releasing locking couplers does not apply here. Both ends of this hose are ordinary barbs with clamps.
The carburetor also gives you a float bowl drain screw so you can empty residual fuel deliberately. And because any filter on this machine sits inline where you can reach it, rather than inside the tank as part of a pump module the way injected systems arrange it, the entire fuel path stays serviceable with basic tools.
The Aging Process Behind the Failure
Rubber fuel hose stiffens over the years as the plasticizers that keep it flexible migrate out of the material. Heat cycling from the air-cooled 250 speeds the process, and engine movement flexes the stiffening rubber until cracks appear at the bends. Riders in dry, high-desert country see the hardening arrive years earlier, since low humidity draws moisture out of the hose wall and embrittles it from the outside in.
Ethanol-blended fuel works from the inside, absorbing moisture and breaking down the inner liner so it softens and releases material downstream. Fuel left standing through months of inactivity deposits gum that can restrict flow while the hose exterior still passes a casual glance. Between calendar age and modern pump gas, the original line on a machine from 1989 has long since used up its margin.
Tools, Parts, and a Real Word About Gasoline
- Fuel-rated replacement hose in the same inside diameter as the original
- New clamps or spring clips, plus a fresh inline filter if the run includes one
- Nitrile or rubber gloves and eye protection
- An approved sealed container for drained gas and a shallow catch pan
- Small flat-blade screwdriver, needle-nose pliers, sharp razor knife, clean rags
Gasoline vapor is heavier than air. It sinks, pools at floor level, and drifts sideways along the ground, which is why a cracked window six feet up does nothing for you. Work outdoors or with the door wide open and airflow across the floor. Keep heaters, flames, hot work lights, and grinders out of the space entirely. Pull the negative battery cable before you open a fitting, and keep the drain container closed rather than letting an open pan of fuel sit next to you while you work.
Taking the Old Line Off
Turn the petcock off, then start the engine and let it run until it quits, consuming what remains downstream. Slide the pan under the carburetor, loosen the float bowl drain screw, and let the bowl empty completely. Remove the seat and whichever panel obstructs the hose run, then follow the line from petcock to carburetor and note the clips holding it.
With pliers, walk the old clamps back along the hose. Twist each end a quarter turn to break the varnish bond, then draw it off the barb. Hardened rubber that will not budge should be slit lengthwise and peeled away rather than yanked, because the petcock spigot bends far more easily than the hose lets go. Since this is a 2WD chassis with no front differential in the frame, there is no additional clearance point to work the hose around on the way out.
Installing the Replacement and Finishing Up
Cut the new hose to the length of the old piece and no longer. Extra hose sags where it can chafe on a frame tube; a short piece keeps both fittings under permanent strain. Slide the clamps on first, then push each end fully onto its barb until it bottoms against the shoulder. Assemble dry — grease, oil, and silicone all give fuel a route to creep past the seal and can wash contamination into the carburetor. Soften stubborn new rubber with a brief hot water dip instead of reaching for lubricant. Set each clamp just behind the barb's raised bead and tighten evenly until the hose is held firmly without being cut. Route the line through its original guides, away from the exhaust and cylinder head.
Close the drain screw, Reconnect the battery, and open the petcock. Give it a minute to fill, then wipe both joints dry and study them for reappearing fuel. Start the engine, let the LT-F250 idle for several minutes, and check again with everything vibrating. Snap the throttle a few times, run a clean rag under the hose where you cannot see, and make sure it comes back dry. When the joints hold through several minutes of running, the repair is done.
