The 1989 TRX350 4X4 is carbureted and gravity fed, which means the moment a fitting comes loose, fuel goes wherever gravity sends it. That same simplicity is what makes the repair easy: a manual petcock under the tank shuts off flow, and the hose is held by an ordinary clamp at each end.

Ventilation, Gear, and a Real Safety Note

Gasoline vapor is heavier than air. It does not float away, it sinks and collects along the floor where water heater pilot lights, shop heaters, battery chargers, and power strips all live. Push the TRX350 outdoors or open the garage completely and get a breeze moving at ground level, because a ceiling fan does nothing for vapor sitting at ankle height.

Shut down every ignition source in the space and let the exhaust and cylinder cool completely before your forearms end up beside them. Wear nitrile gloves, since gasoline pulls the oils out of skin fast, and add eye protection for the moment a fitting decides to spray. Drain fuel only into an approved sealed container, keep a rag draped over any open fitting, and clean up spills as they happen rather than at the end.

Assembling the Parts and Tools

Why the Original Hose Is Finished

Fuel hose fails by chemistry, not by mileage. The compound depends on plasticizers to stay pliable, and heat radiating off the air-cooled single drives them out over decades of heat cycling until the rubber turns stiff and glassy. Brittle hose cannot absorb the vibration of a large single or the twist of a chassis crossing rough ground, so cracks open at the bends and behind the clamps where stress is permanent. Low-humidity climates accelerate that hardening, and sun on an uncovered machine adds its own damage.

Ethanol-blended fuel comes at it from the bore. During any long layup it draws moisture into the system and degrades the inner liner, so the inside goes soft and gummy while the outside continues to harden. The debris shed from that liner travels directly to the float bowl and jets. A hose on a machine this old can pass a casual glance and still be entirely used up.

Signs That Confirm the Diagnosis

Look for fuel pooled on the skid plate or floor after the quad has been parked, a dark damp streak along a frame member, or a gasoline smell that lingers in a closed shed. Pinch the hose along its length and feel for hardened spots, and inspect the barbs for a varnished ring of caked dust where fuel has been weeping past a clamp. Then consider how the engine runs. Bogging on a climb, hesitation off idle, and an empty-tank stumble with fuel still aboard all point at a hose that has collapsed internally, because gravity cannot force fuel through a restriction the way a pump would. That distinction saves many owners from tearing into a healthy carburetor.

Removing and Installing the Line

Turn the petcock to OFF and confirm it holds, draining the tank if the valve seeps past its internals. Remove the seat and the side cover that exposes the valve, then trace the hose to the carburetor inlet. Connect your scrap hose to the float bowl drain, back the screw out, and let the bowl empty into the pan. Unlike an injected quad, which requires the pump fuse pulled and residual pressure bled first, this system is inert once the valve is shut.

Slide both clamps well back, twist each hose end on its barb to break the varnish bond, and work it free. On a hose this old, expect it to be stuck; slice it lengthwise and peel it away rather than prying a brittle spigot. Take note of the routing, since the 4x4 chassis carries front differential hardware and extra frame structure that guide the line through clearance points a 2WD Fourtrax lacks.

Cut the new hose to the original length so it follows the same gentle curve, then push each end on dry until it bottoms against the fitting shoulder. Keep grease, oil, and silicone away from the barbs entirely; a lubricated sealing face gives fuel a path past even a well tightened clamp. Dip the hose end in hot water if it resists. Set the clamps just behind the raised bead on each barb, tighten evenly until the hose stops rotating by hand, and stop before you crush a groove into fresh rubber. Return the line to its original clips, clear of the header and the front driveline.

Proving It Before the First Ride

Close the float bowl drain screw, open the petcock, and leave the quad alone for five minutes with a clean dry rag under each connection. Dry rags mean the job is sound. Anything damp means the hose is not fully seated or a clamp sits off its bead, both trivial to fix now and serious a mile from the truck. Start the engine and repeat the inspection at idle, because vibration exposes marginal joints that pass a static test.

Finish with two small tasks while the panels are off. Clean the sediment screen behind the petcock, which traps the flakes an aging hose sheds and will imitate fuel starvation once clogged. Confirm the tank vent hose is open and routed properly, since a blocked vent stops a gravity feed just as thoroughly as bad line ever did.
