- A generous stack of clean rags and a short length of scrap hose for draining the float bowl
Handling Gasoline Without Drama
This is the part of the job that deserves genuine attention. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air, so it flows downhill and collects at floor level where water heater pilots, shop heaters, and power strips sit. Roll the Fourtrax outside or open the garage fully and get air moving at ground level rather than trusting a ceiling fan. Shut down anything that sparks, keep a rag over open fittings, and let the exhaust cool completely before your forearms end up next to it. Drain fuel only into a sealed container, and wash your hands before eating or handling anything else.
How These Hoses Deteriorate
The hose on a 1989 machine has spent decades absorbing heat from an air-cooled cylinder and vibration from a big single. Heat cycling drives the plasticizers out of the rubber, and the compound that was once pliable turns stiff enough to crack at every bend and behind every clamp. A quad that bogs on a climb, hesitates coming off idle, or acts starved for fuel with plenty in the tank is often being throttled by a hose that has collapsed internally, not by a carburetor problem. Weeping at a fitting shows up as a dusty, varnished ring where fuel has seeped and dried.
Pulling the Old Hose Off
Turn the petcock to OFF and watch to make sure it holds, since a valve of this age can seep past worn internals. If it does, drain the tank. Attach your scrap hose to the float bowl drain, back the screw out, and empty the bowl into the pan so the lower fitting stays manageable. Slide each clamp well back, then twist the hose to break its varnish bond to the barb before pulling it free. When a hose has hardened around a fitting, slice it lengthwise and peel it rather than risking the spigot. Fitting the New Line and Verifying It
