The rubber fuel hose feeding the carburetor on a 1988 LT-F250F Quadrunner 4x4 is one of the cheapest components on the quad and one of the few that can put it on a trailer. Replacing it is a straightforward afternoon job once you understand how Suzuki plumbed this generation of utility ATV.
Confirming What You Are Working With
The 1988 Quadrunner 4x4 is carbureted, full stop. There is no electric pump, no injector, and no pressurized rail anywhere on this machine. Fuel leaves the tank through a manual petcock valve mounted at the tank's lowest corner, travels down a short length of rubber hose, and enters the float bowl of the Mikuni carburetor entirely by gravity. That petcock is your friend, and it is the single biggest reason this job is easier on the Quadrunner than on a modern injected quad, where the absence of a shutoff valve forces you to pinch the hose closed and bleed off pump pressure before a single fitting comes loose.
The petcock on this model typically offers ON, RESERVE, and OFF positions. Verify OFF actually stops flow before you commit to the repair. A twenty-plus-year-old valve with a hardened internal gasket will sometimes seep even when turned fully off, and knowing that in advance saves you a mess later.
Why the Hose Hardens and Splits
Fuel hose is rubber loaded with plasticizers that keep it flexible. Those compounds migrate out over decades, and what was once pliable becomes stiff and glassy. Once the hose loses its ability to flex, the constant vibration of an air-cooled single and the flex of the frame over rough ground turn surface checking into genuine cracks. Owners in arid regions watch this happen faster, since low humidity draws moisture from the hose wall and accelerates the hardening from the outside in.
Ethanol-blended pump gas works the opposite direction. Alcohol attracts water and slowly attacks the inner liner, so a hose can be brittle outside and gummy inside at the same time. When a Quadrunner sits unused with fuel in the line, that degradation continues quietly and sheds material toward the carburetor jets. On a 1988 machine, calendar age alone is reason enough to replace the line whether or not you can see damage.
Symptoms That Point at the Line
- A small puddle or damp patch of gasoline under the tank area after the quad has been parked overnight
- A persistent fuel smell in the shed or garage that does not fade
- Visible fine cracking, a chalky gray surface, or a section that feels hard when you pinch it
- Bogging under throttle, hesitation climbing a hill, or the engine acting starved as though it is running on reserve
- A dust-caked ring at either fitting, which is dried evidence of slow seepage
- Weeping that appears only when the tank is full, because gravity head pressure is highest then
That last symptom is specific to a gravity-fed setup like this one. A pinhole leak may hide entirely at a quarter tank and give itself away only after you fill up.
Gathering Tools and Setting Up Safely
Have everything within arm's reach before you open anything:
- Nitrile or rubber gloves — gasoline pulls the oils straight out of your skin
- An approved metal or fuel-rated plastic container for drained gas
- Replacement hose matched to the original inside diameter, rated for gasoline
- Fresh clamps — a small assortment of spring clips or screw clamps
- Flat-blade screwdriver, common hand tools, and a sharp utility blade
- Shop rags and a shallow drain pan
Work outside or with the door fully open. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air and settles at floor level, so ventilation near the ground matters more than an open window over the bench. Keep the battery disconnected, no heaters or pilot lights running, and nothing that sparks anywhere nearby.
Removing the Old Hose
Turn the petcock to OFF and let the engine idle until it stalls, which empties the float bowl and leaves less fuel to spill. If your Quadrunner's carburetor has a float bowl drain screw, open it over the pan and let the remaining gas out. Slide the drain pan under the hose run and drape a rag over the fitting you plan to open first.
Push each clamp well back along the hose before disturbing the connection. Old hose bonds itself to the barbs with varnish, so twist it gently to break that grip rather than pulling straight and hard on a fragile plastic petcock spigot. If it refuses to release, slit the hose lengthwise with a blade and peel it off the fitting — you are replacing it anyway, and a broken petcock nipple turns a simple job into a much larger one.
Note the routing before the hose is fully free. As a 4x4, this Quadrunner carries front differential and driveshaft hardware that a two-wheel-drive quad does not, and the hose has a defined path around that hardware and clear of the exhaust. Photograph or sketch the guides and clips so reassembly matches.
Fitting the New Line
Cut the replacement to the same length as the original. Extra hose sags into moving parts or chafes on the frame, and a short piece strains the fittings. Push each end fully onto its barb until it seats past the raised bead, and do this dry. Never smear grease, oil, or silicone on a fuel fitting — lubricant on the sealing surface gives gasoline a path to creep out and can migrate into the carburetor. If the hose is stiff, dip the end in hot water for thirty seconds to soften it.
Set the clamps just behind the bead on each fitting and tighten them evenly, snug rather than crushing. Overtightening a screw clamp on a soft hose cuts into the wall and creates the leak you are trying to prevent. Return the line to its original clips so it stays away from the cylinder head and the front driveline.
Leak Check Before the First Ride
Turn the petcock back to ON and watch both connections for a full minute without starting the engine. Gravity feed means the line pressurizes immediately, so a bad joint shows itself right away. Wipe everything dry with a clean rag and look again. Then start the Quadrunner, let it idle, and inspect once more with a light, checking the top of each fitting where seepage tends to hide.
Once it holds dry through a few heat cycles, take a short low-speed lap and check a third time. While you are there, look at the small inline fuel filter if your machine has one fitted, and at the petcock's own screen — on a carbureted Quadrunner these are serviceable in the open, unlike an injected machine that buries its filter inside the tank with the pump. A new hose feeding a clogged filter still runs poorly, so address both at once and the 1988 LT-F250F will deliver fuel reliably for many seasons.
