Knowing where the fuel actually travels on a 1988 Quadrunner 250 makes the whole repair obvious. Gasoline sits in the tank ahead of the seat, exits through a manual petcock on the left side, drops down a length of rubber hose, and arrives at the carburetor inlet tucked behind the cylinder. Gravity does all the work. There is nothing else in the circuit to diagnose, which means when the engine stops receiving fuel, the hose and the petcock are the entire suspect list.
The Layout You Are Working With
This is a carbureted machine through and through. The petcock is mechanical, the carburetor is a Mikuni with a float bowl and a drain screw, and there is no electric pump, no injector, and no pressure in the line at any moment. Owners who have wrestled with fuel-injected quads know the drill of pulling a pump relay, cranking to bleed off pressure, and releasing locking quick-connect couplers. None of that exists here. The lever on the petcock is a genuine shutoff, and both hose ends are plain barbs held by clamps.
The 2x4 configuration also keeps things tidy. With no front differential or front driveshaft occupying frame space, the hose has a clear, direct route from tank to carburetor and does not need to be threaded around driveline hardware the way it does on a four-wheel-drive chassis.
What Kills Rubber Fuel Hose
Fuel line does not really wear out; it dries out. The compounds that keep the wall flexible slowly leave the rubber, and every heat cycle from the air-cooled 250 accelerates the loss. The hose stiffens, loses the ability to conform around a barb, and eventually cracks where it bends. In arid, low-humidity regions this happens noticeably sooner because dry air pulls moisture out of the hose and hardens it from the outer surface inward.
Ethanol-blended pump gas attacks the other side of the wall. Alcohol absorbs moisture and degrades the inner liner, which softens and sheds particles toward the carburetor. Fuel that sits stagnant through a long off-season leaves gum and varnish behind, and a passage can be meaningfully restricted while the outside of the hose still looks acceptable. On a machine from 1988, age alone is reason enough.
Symptoms Owners Tend to Notice First
- A small puddle or persistent damp spot on the floor below the tank once the Quadrunner has been parked a while
- A gasoline smell that hangs around the machine long after the engine has cooled
- Visible cracking or a chalky, hardened texture on the hose, worst at the bends
- A section that has gone soft and swollen where it meets a fitting
- An engine that starts fine but bogs when the throttle opens, runs lean at higher rpm, or acts like it is out of gas with a half tank showing
That last symptom sends plenty of owners chasing jets and air filters. A hardened hose that has collapsed internally or a gum-narrowed passage cannot keep the float bowl full under demand, and the engine leans out exactly when it needs fuel most.
Supplies, Then Safety
Have everything on hand before the first clamp moves:
- Gasoline-rated hose in the original inside diameter
- New clamps or spring clips sized for that hose
- A replacement inline filter if one is fitted in the run
- Rubber or nitrile gloves and eye protection
- A sealed container for drained fuel and a catch pan
- Flat-blade screwdriver, needle-nose pliers, razor knife, clean rags
Now the part that genuinely matters. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air, so it settles at floor level and travels sideways along the ground. Work outdoors or with the garage door fully open and air moving low, not just a window cracked overhead. Keep flames, shop heaters, hot work lights, and anything that can spark far away from the area. Disconnect the negative battery cable before opening a fitting, keep the fuel container capped between pours, and wear the gloves the whole time.
Freeing the Old Hose
Close the petcock and let the engine run until it stalls, which burns off what remains downstream. Set the pan beneath the carburetor, back out the float bowl drain screw, and empty the bowl. Remove the seat and any fender panel or console cover that blocks your view of the hose. Trace the full run before disturbing anything and note every clip and guide it passes through.
Slide the existing clamps well back along the hose with pliers. Twist the hose a quarter turn on each barb to break the varnish that has bonded it in place, then pull it straight off. If the rubber has fused to a fitting, resist the urge to pull harder. Slit it lengthwise with the razor and peel it away in strips instead, because the petcock spigot is soft and bending it turns a twenty-minute job into a tank removal.
Setting the New Line in Place
Cut the replacement to match the original piece exactly. Extra length lets the hose sag into something it will rub against; too little keeps constant tension on both fittings while the engine rocks on its mounts. Put the clamps on loose before seating either end. Push each end fully onto its barb until it stops against the shoulder, and do it completely dry. No grease, no oil, no silicone spray belongs anywhere near these fittings — a lubricant film gives fuel a path to weep along and can carry residue straight into the carburetor. Stiff new hose slides on easily after a few seconds in hot water.
Set each clamp just behind the raised bead on the barb and tighten it firmly and evenly, stopping well before you deform or cut the rubber. If you are installing an inline filter, aim the flow arrow toward the carburetor and support it so its weight is not hanging on the hose. Return the line to its factory guides, keeping it clear of the cylinder head, exhaust, and steering components.
Checking Your Work Before the Trail
Tighten the bowl drain screw, Reconnect the battery, and open the petcock. Allow a minute for gravity to fill the line and bowl. Wipe both joints with a clean, dry rag and then watch them closely for any fuel reappearing. Start the engine and let it idle several minutes while you inspect again, since vibration finds seeps that a static check never will. Blip the throttle a few times, run a dry rag along the underside of the hose where your eyes cannot reach, and confirm it comes back clean. Once both connections stay dry through a few minutes of running, put the bodywork back and the LT-F250 is ready to earn its keep.
