The Bayou 185 was Kawasaki's small, no-nonsense utility quad, and any example still turning a wheel today is running rubber plumbing that has long outlived what the factory ever expected of it. Every 1988 Bayou 185 2x4 left the line carbureted, so the fuel path is about as simple as a four-stroke gets: gasoline exits the tank through a manual petcock, falls by gravity down a short hose, and drops into the float bowl of a single carburetor. No pump, no pressure, no sensors. That simplicity is exactly why an owner with basic hand tools can knock this repair out in an afternoon.

Gravity Feed, a Petcock, and Not Much Else

Understanding the layout before you touch it saves fuel on the floor. The petcock threads into the underside of the tank and gives you ON, RESERVE, and OFF positions, which means you have a genuine shutoff valve upstream of the hose you are about to remove. That is a real luxury. On a modern fuel-injected quad there is no petcock at all, the tank feeds a pressurized circuit driven by an in-tank pump, and the technician has to bleed pressure down and often wrestle with plastic quick-connect couplers. Your 185 asks for none of that. Turn the valve to OFF and the fuel stops where it is. The carburetor also carries a float bowl drain, so the last few ounces sitting downstream of the hose can be dumped deliberately rather than spilled.

What Actually Kills a Fuel Hose

Fuel line does not wear out from use, it ages out. The plasticizers that keep the rubber soft slowly migrate out of the hose wall, and what began as a pliable tube becomes stiff, glossy, and prone to splitting. Heat cycling from the air-cooled single accelerates it, and so does the constant low-level vibration a small utility engine puts into everything bolted near it. Riders in dry, low-humidity country tend to see hoses harden faster, because there is simply less moisture in the air to keep the outer surface supple.

Ethanol-blended pump gas works the opposite direction, attacking from the inside. When a Bayou sits for a season with E10 in the system, the alcohol draws in water and starts breaking down the inner liner while the outer wall continues to stiffen. The result is a hose that can look perfectly usable, feel firm to the touch, and still be shedding rubber crumbs toward your float needle. On a machine of this age, calendar time matters more than appearance.

Clues the Line Is on Its Way Out

  • A wet spot or small puddle of gasoline on the floor beneath the engine after the quad has been parked overnight
  • A strong fuel smell hanging around the frame even when nothing is visibly dripping
  • Fine surface cracking, a chalky white haze, or hard spots you can feel when you pinch the hose between finger and thumb
  • Bogging under throttle, a stumble climbing a hill, or the engine acting starved as though it were nearly out of gas
  • A dust-caked ring at either barb, which is dried residue from fuel that has been weeping and evaporating for a while
  • A hose that has gone soft and spongy near the petcock, a sign the liner is breaking down internally

Setting Up the Job

Lay out everything before the first clamp comes loose. You will want nitrile or rubber gloves, since gasoline pulls the natural oils straight out of your skin. Add a shallow drain pan or an approved fuel container, a length of replacement hose matched to the original inside diameter, a fresh set of clamps, a flat-blade screwdriver, a small socket or nut driver set, a sharp utility blade, and plenty of shop rags.

Ventilation is not a formality here. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air and settles at floor level, so it collects around your ankles and lingers. Work outside or with the garage door fully open, and keep anything that sparks or glows well clear of the area, including shop heaters, grinders, and drop lights with hot bulbs. Disconnecting the battery before you start is a cheap insurance policy on a machine this old, where wiring insulation may already be tired.

Getting the Old Hose Off

Turn the petcock to OFF and give it a minute. Pull the seat and any bodywork that blocks your view of the run between the tank and the carburetor. Slide the drain pan underneath, then open the float bowl drain screw and let the carburetor empty so it cannot back-feed onto your hands later. Loosen the clamp at the carburetor end first, sliding it well back along the hose rather than fighting it in place.

Old hose bonds itself to a brass barb with varnish. Twist gently to break that bond instead of pulling straight, and if it refuses to let go, slit the hose lengthwise with the utility blade and peel it off. That protects a fitting you cannot easily replace. Repeat at the petcock end, catching the trickle that follows. Because this is a 2WD chassis, the run is short and largely unobstructed, with none of the front differential hardware and extra crossmembers that push a hose on a 4x4 machine onto a longer, more indirect path. Even so, note every clip and guide it passes through before it is fully free.

Fitting the Replacement Dry

Cut the new hose to match the old one exactly. Extra length looks harmless and then chafes on a frame tube or drapes near the exhaust. Push each end fully onto its barb until it bottoms out. Dipping the hose end in hot water for a few seconds softens it enough to slide on without a struggle.

Leave grease, oil, and silicone spray out of this entirely. Any lubricant on a barb becomes a leak path once fuel starts working at it, and a rubber hose on clean brass seals better dry than it ever will assisted. Set the new clamps just behind the raised bead on each fitting and snug them evenly, firm enough to hold but not so tight that they bite into aged rubber. Return the hose to its original guides so it hangs clear of the cylinder and header.

Proving It Does Not Weep

Close the float bowl drain, then turn the petcock back to ON and simply watch. Gravity feed means the line pressurizes the instant fuel flows, so give it a few minutes and inspect both joints with a clean, dry rag. Any darkening on the cloth is a leak, not a smudge. Start the engine, let it idle, and check again while it runs and vibrates, since some seeps only appear once the frame is shaking.

Worth noting for comparison: your 185 keeps its filtration where you can reach it, either as a screen in the petcock or a small inline element. Fuel-injected quads bury the filter inside the tank as part of the pump module, so their owners cannot service it during a hose job. On the Bayou, a fresh hose is a good moment to clean or replace that screen while everything is already open and drained.
