A 1988 TRX350 4X4 that stalls halfway up a hill, or that greets you with a fuel smell every time you open the shed, is usually complaining about one inexpensive part. This quad is carbureted and gravity fed with a manual petcock beneath the tank, so the hose between the tank and the carburetor carries all of the fuel and none of the pressure. When it hardens, the machine either leaks or starves, and sometimes both.
Sorting the Symptoms Into Leaks and Restrictions
A fuel hose can fail two different ways, and the evidence differs. Leakage is physical and obvious once you know where to look: a puddle on the skid plate or floor after the quad has been parked, a dark damp streak down a frame member, a gasoline odor that will not clear from a closed shed, or a ring of caked dust and varnish at a barb where fuel has been slowly weeping past a clamp.
Restriction is subtler. The engine bogs on a climb, hesitates coming off idle, or behaves as if the tank were dry when it plainly is not, all without dropping a single bead of fuel. That happens because gravity is the only thing moving fuel here, so a hose that has collapsed internally or gummed up cannot keep the float bowl full at throttle. Run your fingers along the whole length and feel for stiff, glassy sections and chalky surface cracking before you consider taking the carburetor apart.
The Two Ways Rubber Degrades
From the outside, heat is the enemy. The air-cooled 350 class single radiates constantly, and every heat cycle drives more plasticizer out of the hose wall until the material is hard and brittle. At that point the shake of a big single and the flex of a frame working across ruts crack it at the bends and behind the clamps. Dry, low-humidity country accelerates the drying, and a quad kept outdoors collects ultraviolet damage on top of it.
From the inside, ethanol-blended fuel left standing during a layup absorbs moisture and eats at the inner liner, leaving the bore soft and gummy while the exterior keeps hardening. The particles shed from that liner go straight into the float bowl and jets. Both processes track the calendar rather than hours ridden, which is why a garage-kept example needs the hose replaced as much as a working machine does.
What to Have on Hand
- Nitrile gloves and eye protection
- An approved sealed fuel container and a wide, shallow drain pan
- Gasoline-rated hose matched to the original inside diameter, cut a little long
- Fresh clamps in the correct size, plus a flat-blade screwdriver and needle-nose pliers
- Sockets for the seat and side covers, and a razor knife for a bonded hose
- A scrap length of hose for the float bowl drain and a generous stack of rags
Give the space the same attention as the parts. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air, so it runs downhill and pools at floor level where pilot lights, shop heaters, and power strips sit. Work outdoors or with the door wide open and move air across the ground rather than overhead. Shut down every ignition source, and let the exhaust cool completely before your hands go near it.
Taking the Old Hose Off
Close the petcock and give it half a minute to prove it seals, since a valve with this much age can pass fuel even when shut. Drain the tank into your container if that is the case. Remove the seat and the side cover that exposes the valve, then follow the hose down to the carburetor inlet. Fit the scrap hose to the float bowl drain, aim it into the pan, and back the screw out so the bowl empties before the lower fitting is disturbed.
Owners of injected quads have to pull a pump fuse and bleed line pressure before opening anything. On this carbureted TRX350 the shut valve does all of that work. Slide both clamps well back, twist each hose end to break the varnish bond, and pull it off the barb. If it refuses, slit it lengthwise and peel it rather than levering on a brittle spigot. Watch the routing as it comes out, because the 4x4 chassis carries front differential hardware and additional frame structure that route the line through clearance points absent on a 2WD Fourtrax.
Installation and Verification
Cut the replacement to the original length so it follows the same relaxed arc. Extra slack lets it sag onto the cylinder head or chafe a frame tube, while too little pulls at both barbs until the hose walks off one. Push each end on dry, seating it fully against the shoulder of the fitting, and keep every lubricant away from the barbs. Grease, oil, or silicone on a sealing surface gives fuel a path past the clamp, and no amount of extra torque closes it. Warm water on the hose end is the only assistance required.
Position the clamps just behind the raised bead on each fitting, with the screws where a screwdriver can reach them, and tighten evenly until the hose will not rotate by hand. Reseat the line in its original clips so it stays clear of the header, the front driveline, and the steering.
Close the bowl drain, open the petcock, and let the machine sit undisturbed for five minutes with a clean dry rag under each joint. Dry rags are the pass. Start the engine and inspect again at idle, since vibration finds joints that hold fine when nothing is moving. Before the bodywork goes back on, clean the sediment screen behind the petcock and confirm the tank vent hose is open, because either one can reproduce the fuel starvation you just eliminated.
