A Practical Guide to Fuel Line Service on the 1987 Yamaha YFM225 Moto–4

Start With a Hands–On Inspection

Do not replace the hose on your 1987 YFM225 Moto–4 blind. Spend five minutes learning what you actually have first. Pull the seat, find the petcock threaded into the low corner of the tank, and trace the single rubber line running from it down to the carburetor. Run your fingers along the whole length. You are feeling for a section that has gone rigid, a chalky or powdery texture, or a spot where the hose has taken a permanent set from resting against the frame.

Then check the two joints closely. A ring of caked dirt around a clamp is fuel seeping and evaporating, trapping dust as it goes. Bend the hose gently in the middle and watch the surface. Fine cracks that open when flexed mean the compound is done, even if it holds pressure sitting still. Note the length and routing while everything is intact, because it is far easier to copy a path you photographed than to guess at it later with the old piece already in the trash.

Why These Hoses Do Not Last Forever

Age attacks fuel hose from both surfaces. The outside loses plasticizers to heat, and the YFM225 puts its air–cooled cylinder and exhaust close enough to keep the hose warm on every ride. Each cycle takes a bit more flexibility out of the compound. Arid climates speed this along considerably, since dry air draws moisture out of the hose wall and leaves it glassy years earlier than a humid region would.

The bore takes a different kind of abuse. Ethanol–blended pump gasoline holds water in suspension and is far more aggressive toward mid–1980s rubber than the fuel this quad was designed to run. Long stretches of sitting with fuel in the line are the worst scenario, because the alcohol works on the liner while gum and varnish build up in the passage. The result is a hose that can look fine outside and be shedding material inside, which on a machine of this vintage makes replacement a matter of when rather than if.

Recognizing a Line About to Quit

  • A raw gasoline smell hanging around the quad hours after it was shut off
  • A damp patch or small puddle on the floor beneath the engine cases
  • Visible surface checking or a hardened, unbending section of hose
  • Fuel weeping at a clamp, showing up as a dark or dust–crusted collar
  • The engine bogging when you open the throttle, or surging lean at a steady pace
  • An abrupt stall on a long climb that mimics running out of gas, followed by a normal restart

Setting Up the Job

You need surprisingly little: correctly sized fuel hose for the YFM225, two fresh clamps matching the original style, gloves, safety glasses, a flat–blade screwdriver, a socket for the seat and panel hardware, a sharp razor knife, a fuel–rated container, a short stub of scrap hose, and a generous supply of clean rags.

What you also need is airflow. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air and creeps along the floor rather than rising, which puts it right at the level of a water heater pilot flame, a shop heater element, or a battery charger sitting on the concrete. Work outside if you can. If you cannot, open the garage door completely for the whole job, shut off anything with a pilot or a spark, and keep a dry chemical extinguisher within reach. Gloves are not optional either; raw fuel pulls the oils out of your skin fast.

Taking the Old Line Out

Flip the petcock to OFF and give it a moment. Being carbureted, this Moto–4 lets you stop the fuel supply with a lever, which is far simpler than the pressure relief and line clamping a fuel injected quad would demand. Remove the seat and any panel in the way of the carburetor inlet.

Empty what is left downstream by slipping the scrap hose onto the float bowl drain nipple, pointing it into your container, and cracking the drain screw at the base of the carburetor. Close it once the flow stops. Now slide both hose clamps a couple of inches clear of the barbs, tuck a rag beneath the joint you are opening, and twist the hose on the spigot before pulling. That rotation shears the varnish that has effectively glued old rubber to metal and plastic. If an end still will not release, slice it lengthwise with the razor and peel it off. Levering on the petcock spigot or the carburetor inlet is how those parts break, and neither is a casual replacement.

As the hose comes free, confirm the routing matches what you photographed. This chassis is two–wheel–drive, so there is no front differential or extra driveline hardware to thread around and the run stays short and accessible, unlike the longer detours found on 4x4 utility quads.

Installing the New Hose the Right Way

Trim the replacement to the exact length of the original. Too long and it sags into the frame or wanders toward the exhaust; too short and it pulls constantly on both fittings. Push each end on dry until it seats against the shoulder of the barb, and if it fights you, dip the end in hot water for a few seconds to soften it. Keep grease, oil, and silicone spray completely away from the fittings. A lubricated sealing surface gives gasoline a channel to travel under the clamp, which is precisely the leak you are trying to eliminate.

Set each new clamp just behind the raised bead on its spigot and tighten evenly. Firm is right; crushing is not, since biting into aged rubber creates a stress line that eventually weeps. Return the hose to the original guides so it clears hot surfaces and does not bind when the bars are turned lock to lock.

Testing and Wrapping Up

Turn the petcock to ON and simply watch for a few minutes. Gravity loads both joints as soon as fuel arrives, so a bad connection shows itself before the engine ever runs. Wipe each fitting with a clean pale rag rather than trusting a quick glance, since a slow weep is easy to miss on dark rubber. Fire the 225 up next, let it idle, and check both ends again with the engine shaking, because vibration is what exposes a marginally tight clamp.

One last step pays off. Back the petcock out of the tank and rinse its strainer screen in clean fuel. That screen collects the rubber crumbs and sediment the dying hose was sending downstream, and along with the float bowl it is the only filtration your YFM225 has. Clean screen, fresh line, and the fuel delivery is back to behaving the way it should.
