Four-wheel drive changes one thing about this job, and it is worth knowing before you start. The 1987 LT-F250F carries a front differential and the driveline hardware that comes with it, which fills frame space a two-wheel-drive Quadrunner leaves open. The fuel hose still runs the same short path from tank to carburetor, but there are more brackets, crossmembers, and clearance points around it, so plan on photographing the routing before the old line comes out.

Working Around the Four Wheel Drive Hardware

Access is the practical difference. On a 4x4 chassis the area beneath the tank is busier, and the hose may pass a bracket or frame tube that a 2WD machine does not have. That matters for two reasons: you need to reproduce the original path so the new hose does not end up resting against something that will chafe it, and you want to confirm clearance from the front driveline once everything is buttoned up. Note every clip and guide as you go, and check that nothing has shifted position when you reinstall.

Confirming the Fuel System on This Machine

The 1987 LT-F250F is carbureted. Fuel drops by gravity out of the tank through a manual petcock, down a short rubber hose, and into a Mikuni carburetor where the float valve meters it into the bowl. No electric pump exists in this circuit and nothing holds pressure at any point. Turning the petcock lever to off truly stops the fuel, which means the preliminary steps a fuel-injected quad demands simply do not apply — there is no pump relay to remove, no cranking sequence to bleed a pressurized rail, and no self-locking quick-connect coupler requiring a release tool. Both ends of this hose are plain barbs secured with clamps.

The carbureted layout also gives you a float bowl drain screw, so residual fuel goes into a pan under control instead of running down the frame. And where an injected machine seals its filter inside the tank as part of the pump module, any filtration here sits inline and fully serviceable.

Why the Original Hose Is Finished

Fuel line hardens as the plasticizers that keep the rubber flexible migrate out of the wall over the years, and heat cycling from the air-cooled 250 pushes that along. A stiffened hose cannot conform around a barb tightly enough to seal, and vibration then opens hairline cracks at the bends. Dry, low-humidity climates accelerate the whole process by drawing moisture from the rubber and embrittling it from the outer surface inward.

Ethanol-blended pump gas works from the inside, absorbing water and degrading the inner liner until it softens and sheds material toward the carburetor. Fuel that sits stagnant through months of inactivity leaves gum and varnish that can restrict the bore while the outside of the hose still looks acceptable. On a machine from 1987, the original line has been aging for a very long time regardless of hours.

Symptoms of a Failing Line

  • A puddle or persistent damp spot on the floor beneath the tank after the machine has been sitting
  • A gasoline smell around the Quadrunner well after the engine has cooled
  • Visible cracking or a chalky white cast on the hose, worst where it curves
  • Rubber that feels rigid and glassy when pinched, or soft and swollen at a fitting
  • Bogging when the throttle opens, a lean stumble at higher rpm, or an engine acting starved with fuel still in the tank

Tools, Parts, and Gasoline Safety

Assemble gasoline-rated hose in the original inside diameter, new clamps or spring clips, a replacement inline filter if one is fitted, nitrile or rubber gloves, eye protection, a sealed container for drained fuel, a catch pan, a flat-blade screwdriver, needle-nose pliers, a sharp razor knife, and clean rags.

The safety note here is genuine and specific. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air, so it drops to floor level, collects there, and spreads sideways along the ground rather than rising and dispersing. Work outdoors, or with the garage door fully open and air moving low across the floor. Keep open flames, shop heaters, hot work lights, and any spark-producing tool entirely out of the area. Disconnect the negative battery cable before opening a fitting so a slipped tool cannot arc, keep the drain container capped between pours, and wear gloves throughout because gasoline strips skin oils in seconds.

Removing the Old Hose

Close the petcock and let the engine run until it stalls, consuming what remains downstream. Slide the pan beneath the carburetor, back out the float bowl drain screw, and let the bowl empty completely. Remove the seat and whichever fender or console panel blocks access, then trace the run and document the clips, guides, and frame clearance points the hose passes on this 4x4 chassis.

Walk the old clamps back along the hose with pliers. Twist each end a quarter turn on its barb to break the varnish that has bonded it in place, then draw it off. If the rubber has fused to a fitting, slit it lengthwise with the razor and peel it away in strips instead of pulling harder — the petcock spigot is soft metal and bending it forces a tank removal. Take your time working the old line past the front driveline hardware rather than dragging it across a bracket edge.

Fitting the New Line and Testing It

Cut the replacement to match the original length exactly. Excess hose sags into a frame tube or the front driveline area where it will chafe through, while a piece cut short keeps both fittings under permanent tension as the engine rocks on its mounts. Slide the clamps on loose, then push each end fully onto its barb until it bottoms against the shoulder. Assemble everything dry — grease, oil, and silicone spray on a fuel fitting give fuel a channel to creep along the sealing face and can carry contamination into the carburetor. Soften stiff new rubber with a fifteen second hot water dip. Position each clamp just behind the raised bead and tighten firmly and evenly without cutting the wall. Aim any inline filter's flow arrow toward the carburetor, support its weight, and return the line to its original guides, confirming clearance from the exhaust, cylinder head, and front driveline components.

Tighten the bowl drain screw, Reconnect the battery, and open the petcock. Allow a minute for gravity to fill the line and bowl, then wipe both joints with a clean rag and watch for fuel reappearing. Start the engine and let the LT-F250F idle several minutes, checking again while the machine vibrates, since running conditions reveal seeps a static test hides. Blip the throttle a few times, sweep a dry rag beneath the hose, and confirm it comes back clean. With both joints dry, reinstall the bodywork and the 4x4 is ready to work.
