The Clues That Point at the Hose

On a 1987 Bayou 185, a failing fuel line rarely hides. This is a gravity fed carbureted machine with no pressure in the system, so when a hose lets go you geneRally get an honest drip rather than a fine mist that evaporates before it lands.

  • A puddle or wet patch on the floor beneath the carburetor or tank after the quad has sat
  • A strong gasoline smell around the machine, especially if the petcock has been left on
  • Cracking, checking, a chalky hardened surface, or a kink that will not straighten out
  • The engine bogging, running lean, or behaving as if the tank is dry when it clearly is not
  • Weeping at a clamp, usually marked by a ring of caked dirt where fuel has seeped and dried

Any of those on a machine this old is worth acting on immediately. A hose that has been in service since the late eighties has no useful life left even if the current symptom is minor.

Carbureted, Gravity Fed, and Two Wheel Drive

This Bayou runs a carburetor fed by gravity through a petcock valve on the tank. There is no electric fuel pump and no pressurized circuit, which means nothing has to be bled down before you start. Rotating the petcock to off stops the supply, and the carburetor's float bowl holds the only remaining fuel downstream of it. That bowl has a drain screw, which is a real convenience you will use in a moment.

Being a 2x4, the Bayou has no front differential or front driveline taking up room in the frame. The hose makes a short, mostly visible run from the petcock down to the carburetor once the seat and side cover are off. Four wheel drive utility quads route the same line around extra driveline hardware and frame crossmembers, and that added complication simply is not present on this machine. Fewer obstacles means fewer opportunities to reinstall the line where it can chafe.

Why the Rubber Fails

Fuel hose ages chemically, not from mileage. Plasticizers that keep the rubber pliable migrate out of the wall across the years, and the hardened material left behind cannot flex the way it once did. From that point, engine heat cycles and the vibration of a small air-cooled single start opening fine cracks, and those cracks tend to appear at bends and in the inch of hose gripping a barb.

A dry storage climate speeds the hardening by pulling moisture out of the hose wall, which is why machines from arid regions often have lines that crack instead of bending. Ethanol-blended pump gas, a fuel this Bayou predates, works on the bore from inside. It draws water into the fuel and degrades the inner liner, and when the quad sits for a season it leaves gum and varnish that narrow the passage and bond the hose to its fittings. Hardening outside while breaking down inside explains why a line can look acceptable and still be shedding material into the carburetor.

What to Gather, and Where to Work

  • Replacement fuel hose in the original inside diameter, bought a little long
  • New hose clamps, worm-gear or spring style, sized to the hose
  • Rubber or nitrile gloves plus eye protection
  • A lidded fuel-rated drain container and a small funnel
  • A flat-blade screwdriver, a small wrench for the float bowl drain, and sockets for the seat and side cover
  • A sharp blade for trimming and a generous stack of clean rags

Do the work outdoors, or with the garage open front and back so air genuinely moves at floor level. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air and pools low in a room, right where shop heaters and water heater pilots sit, so low ventilation is what keeps you safe rather than a window above the bench. Extinguish pilot lights, unplug and relocate battery chargers, keep grinders and hot work lamps away, and place a fire extinguisher on the ground within reach while kneeling. Gloves matter because gasoline strips the oils out of skin instantly and absorbs through it.

Draining Down and Taking the Line Off

Turn the petcock to off before anything else. On a gravity fed Bayou that is the whole shutoff procedure. Slide the drain pan under the carburetor, open the float bowl drain screw, and let the bowl empty into your container. Emptying the bowl first keeps fuel off the engine cases when the hose comes loose.

Pull the seat and side cover to expose the petcock outlet and the hose run to the carburetor. Push the old clamps back along the hose, lay a rag under the joint, and twist the hose gently on the barb to break the varnish bond before working it off. If it has effectively welded itself in place, slit it lengthwise with a blade and peel it away rather than yanking, because a fitting on a machine this old is worth more care than the hose you are discarding. Study the original routing before the line is fully out so the new one clears the exhaust, the throttle cable, and any sharp frame edge.

Installation, Leak Check, and Finishing

Cut the new hose to the same length as the old with square ends. Slack is not insurance; a long hose sags against the frame or drifts toward hot exhaust and chafes. Push each end fully onto its barb until it bottoms out and install it dry. Grease, oil, and silicone spray never belong on a fuel fitting, since a lubricant film on the sealing surface gives fuel a path to creep past the clamp. Warm a stubborn hose end in hot water for half a minute if it resists.

Position new clamps just behind the raised bead on each fitting and tighten them evenly, snug without deforming the rubber. Replace rather than reuse the old clamps, which have long since lost their tension. Close the float bowl drain screw before you restore fuel flow.

Turn the petcock back on and watch the joints. Gravity feed fills the line and float bowl within a minute or two, and any weeping shows up quickly on dry surfaces. Wipe both connections with a clean rag and look again. Start the engine, let it idle, and inspect a third time with the engine warm and vibrating, which is when a clamp that is merely close to tight tends to show itself. Allow several minutes of leak-free running before the bodywork goes back on, then ride a short loop and check once more. Making a habit of closing the petcock whenever this Bayou will sit for a while keeps fuel out of the new hose and helps the repair last.
