Decades of Rubber Aging, Explained
If the fuel hose on a 1986 Bayou 185 has never been changed, it is running on borrowed time regardless of how it looks. Fuel line is a rubber compound that depends on plasticizers to stay flexible, and those compounds slowly leach out of the wall over years and decades. The material left behind is hard, brittle, and unable to absorb the movement it once handled without complaint. From there, ordinary engine heat cycles and the vibration of a small air-cooled single at work do the rest, propagating hairline cracks that start at bends and at the short section clamped over a barb.
Storage conditions push the timeline around. Dry, low-humidity air draws moisture out of the hose and hardens it faster, which is why quads that spent their lives in arid country often have lines that snap rather than bend. Ethanol-blended gasoline, a fuel this machine was never designed around, attacks the bore from the inside. It pulls water into the system, degrades the inner liner, and leaves gum and varnish behind whenever the Bayou sits unused for a stretch. That varnish narrows the passage and glues the hose to its fittings, which you will notice the moment you try to pull one off.
What You Are Working With: Carburetor and Petcock
This Bayou is carbureted and gravity fed. Fuel leaves the tank through a petcock valve, drops down a short hose, and enters the carburetor, where a float bowl holds a small reserve. There is no fuel pump and no pressure in the line, which makes this one of the friendlier fuel jobs on any machine. Rotate the petcock to off and supply stops immediately.
The Bayou 185 is also a two wheel drive quad, so there is no front differential or front driveline occupying the frame. The hose run from petcock to carburetor is short and largely open to view once the seat and side cover come off. Four wheel drive utility machines route the same hose around additional driveline hardware and frame crossmembers, and none of that complexity applies here.
Symptoms of a Failing Line
- A puddle or damp patch beneath the carburetor or tank after the quad has been sitting
- A strong raw fuel smell around the machine, especially with the petcock left in the on position
- Cracks, checking, a chalky hardened feel, or a kink that stays put after you flex the hose
- Bogging, a lean stumble, or the engine acting starved for fuel with a tank that is not empty
- Fuel weeping at a clamp, usually leaving a dirt-caked ring behind at the joint

Assembling Tools and Preparing the Space
- Fuel hose in the original inside diameter, bought slightly long and trimmed to fit

- Nitrile or rubber gloves and eye protection
- A lidded fuel-rated container and a small funnel
- A flat-blade screwdriver, a small wrench for the float bowl drain, and sockets for the seat and side cover
- A sharp blade and plenty of clean rags
Move the machine outside, or open the garage up so air flows through at floor level. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air and settles low in a room, which is exactly where a shop heater or a water heater pilot lives, so ground-level ventilation is the kind that actually matters. Put out pilot lights, unplug and move chargers, keep grinders and hot work lamps clear, and set a fire extinguisher on the floor within reach while kneeling. Wear the gloves for a real reason: gasoline strips skin oils in seconds and absorbs through skin.
Draining and Removing the Old Hose
Rotate the petcock to off. That single action shuts the supply, and on this Bayou it takes the place of everything an injected machine requires to depressurize. Slide the drain pan under the carburetor and open the float bowl drain screw to empty the bowl into the container, which cuts down on spillage when the hose comes loose.
Remove the seat and side cover to expose the petcock outlet and the hose run to the carburetor. Push the old clamps back along the hose, lay a rag beneath the joint, and work the hose off with a gentle twist to break the varnish bond. A hose that is truly stuck should be slit lengthwise and peeled away rather than pulled hard, since the fittings on a machine of this age are worth protecting. Take note of the original routing before the hose is entirely free so the replacement stays away from the exhaust, the throttle cable, and any sharp frame edge.
Installing and Verifying the New Line
Trim the replacement to the same length as the old piece with square ends. Extra length is not a favor, since slack hose sags into the frame or wanders toward hot exhaust. Push each end fully onto its barb until it bottoms out, and install it dry. Keep grease, oil, and silicone spray off the fittings entirely, because a lubricant film on the sealing surface is what lets fuel creep out past a clamp later. A thirty second dip in hot water softens a tight hose end enough to slide on.
Set new clamps just behind the raised bead on each fitting and tighten evenly, firm without crushing the hose. Do not reuse the originals; clamps that have been on for decades have lost their spring. Close the float bowl drain screw before restoring flow.
Turn the petcock to on and watch. Gravity fills the line and the float bowl within a minute, and any weeping shows itself at the joints. Wipe both connections with a clean rag and inspect the dry surfaces again. Start the engine, let it idle, and check a third time with the engine warm and vibrating, which is when a marginal clamp typically gives itself away. After several minutes of dry running, reinstall the bodywork, ride a short loop, and check once more. Shutting the petcock off whenever the Bayou is going to sit for a while keeps fuel out of the fresh hose and out of the carburetor, which is the simplest way to make this repair last.
