The 1986 TRX350 4X4 is a genuine landmark machine, and the ones still in service have earned every hour. What they have not earned is confidence in forty-year-old rubber. This is a carbureted, gravity fed quad with a manual petcock beneath the tank, which means the fuel line is a simple clamped hose and replacing it is well within reach of a rider with intermediate skills and ordinary hand tools.
Four Decades Is Too Long for a Fuel Hose
Rubber does not care whether a machine was ridden or stored. Heat radiating from the air-cooled 350 class single drives plasticizers out of the hose compound with every heat cycle, and after enough of them the material turns stiff and glassy. A hose in that condition cannot flex with the vibration of a large single or with a frame twisting across uneven ground, so cracks form at the bends and directly behind the clamps where stress never releases.
Dry, low-humidity climates accelerate that drying from the outside in, and any period spent parked outdoors adds sun damage. Working the other direction, ethanol-blended fuel left sitting in the line absorbs moisture and breaks down the inner liner, leaving the bore soft and gummy while the exterior keeps hardening. The debris that sheds from that liner travels straight to the float bowl and jets. On a machine of this age, the hose is not something to inspect and reuse.
Symptoms Worth Taking Seriously
- A fuel puddle or dark stain on the skid plate or floor after the quad has been parked
- Persistent gasoline odor around the machine, most obvious in a closed shop
- Fine cracking, chalky texture, or rigid sections found by pinching along the hose
- Bogging on a climb, hesitation off idle, or an engine acting starved with plenty of fuel aboard
- A ring of varnish and caked dust at a barb, showing fuel has been weeping past a clamp
With gravity supplying all the pressure in this system, a hose that has collapsed internally starves the carburetor without ever leaking a drop. That is why a hesitation problem on a TRX350 is worth investigating at the hose before anything gets taken apart on the carburetor.
Parts, Tools, and Working Safely With Fuel
Gather nitrile gloves, eye protection, an approved sealed fuel container, a wide drain pan, gasoline-rated hose in the original inside diameter, new clamps, a flat-blade screwdriver, needle-nose pliers, sockets for the seat and side covers, a razor knife, a scrap length of hose for the float bowl drain, and a solid stack of rags.
Gasoline vapor is heavier than air, which means it flows downhill and pools at floor level exactly where water heater pilot lights, shop heaters, and power strips sit. Work outdoors or with the garage door wide open and get a breeze moving across the ground, not overhead. Shut off every ignition source in the space, allow the exhaust to cool completely before reaching past it, keep a rag over any open fitting, and drain fuel only into a container you can seal.
Removing the Original Hose
Turn the petcock to OFF and give it a moment to prove it holds, because a valve with this much service behind it may seep. Drain the tank into your container if it does. Remove the seat and the side cover needed to expose the valve, then trace the hose down to the carburetor inlet. Attach the scrap hose to the float bowl drain, aim it into the pan, and back the screw out to empty the bowl before the lower fitting comes apart.
Slide both clamps well back, then twist each hose end on its barb to break the hardened varnish bond before pulling. On a hose this old, expect it to be bonded; slit it lengthwise with the razor and peel it away rather than levering on a spigot that has been brittle for years. Pay attention to the routing on the way out. As a 4x4, the TRX350 carries front differential hardware and additional frame structure that a 2WD Fourtrax does not, so the line threads past clearance points that are easy to forget once the old piece is gone.
Installing the New Line and Confirming the Seal
Cut the replacement to match the original length. A hose left long will sag against the cylinder head or chafe on a frame tube, while one cut short pulls at both barbs until it works off one of them. Push each end on dry until it bottoms against the shoulder of the fitting, and keep grease, oil, and silicone spray away from the barbs entirely. Lubricant on a sealing surface gives fuel a path to creep out that clamp torque cannot close. Softening the hose end in hot water is all the help it should need.
Set the new clamps just behind the raised bead on each fitting, position the screws where you can reach them later, and tighten evenly until the hose will not rotate by hand. Return the line to its original clips and guides so it stays clear of the header, the front driveline, and any steering component.
Open the petcock with the bowl drain screw closed and let the machine sit five minutes with a clean dry rag under each joint. Dry rags mean the connections are good. Start the engine and inspect again at idle, because vibration finds marginal joints that hold fine when everything is still. While the bodywork is off, clean the sediment screen behind the petcock, since it collects the flakes an aging hose sheds and a clogged screen will imitate the exact starvation you just cured.
