A Simple Gravity Fed System in Your Favor
The 1985 Bayou 185 is about as straightforward as a fuel system gets. It is carbureted, and fuel moves from the tank down to the carburetor by gravity alone, controlled by a petcock valve on the tank. There is no electric pump, no pressurized circuit, and nothing to depressurize before you begin. Turn the petcock to off and the supply stops, which is the single biggest advantage this machine gives you over a modern injected quad.
It is also a 2x4, meaning no front differential or front driveline crowding the frame. The fuel hose has a short, largely unobstructed run from the tank down to the carburetor, and you can usually see the whole length of it once the seat and side cover come off. On a four wheel drive utility quad that same hose has to navigate around front driveline hardware and extra crossmembers, which is not a concern here. Fewer obstacles means fewer places for a new line to end up rubbing on something.
Why a Forty Year Old Hose Is Living on Borrowed Time
Rubber fuel line does not survive indefinitely, and on a machine of this vintage the original hose is long past its useful life even if it has never leaked. The plasticizers that keep the rubber soft migrate out of the wall over the decades, and the material left behind turns stiff and glassy. Once that happens, engine heat cycles and simple chassis vibration begin opening hairline cracks, usually at a bend or right where the hose slides over a fitting.
A dry climate makes it worse by drawing moisture out of the hose and hardening it faster than humid air would. Ethanol-blended pump gas, which did not exist when this Bayou was built, goes after the inside of the same hose, pulling water into the fuel and degrading the inner liner. Left sitting for a season, it also leaves gum and varnish that narrows the bore and glues the hose to its barbs. Old rubber hardening from outside while ethanol works on the inside is exactly the combination that leads to a hose that looks fine and lets go without warning.
How a Bad Line Announces Itself
- A puddle or wet spot under the carburetor or tank area after the machine has been parked
- A strong gasoline smell around the quad, particularly noticeable if the petcock has been left on
- Visible cracking, a chalky hard surface, or a section that stays kinked after you bend it
- The engine bogging, running lean, or acting like it is out of fuel while the tank still has plenty
- Fuel weeping at a clamp, often leaving a dirt-caked ring around the joint

Tools, Supplies, and a Safe Place to Work
- Replacement fuel hose sized to the original inside diameter
- New hose clamps, either small worm-gear or spring style, sized to the hose
- Rubber or nitrile gloves and eye protection
- A lidded, fuel-rated drain container and a small funnel
- A flat-blade screwdriver, a small wrench for the float bowl drain, and metric sockets for the seat and side cover
- A sharp blade for trimming hose and a stack of clean rags
Work outdoors, or with the garage doors fully open so air moves through at floor level. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air and pools low in a room, exactly where a shop heater or a water heater pilot sits, so ventilation down low is what actually protects you. Extinguish pilot lights, move battery chargers out of the space, keep grinders and hot work lamps away, and set a fire extinguisher on the ground within reach. Gloves are not about staying clean; gasoline strips the oils straight out of skin and absorbs through it.
Getting the Old Line Off
Turn the petcock to the off position first. That is your shutoff, and on this Bayou it is genuinely all you need. Give the carburetor a moment, then place the drain pan beneath it and open the float bowl drain screw to empty the bowl into the container. Draining the bowl means less fuel to spill when the hose comes off and less mess on the engine cases.
Pull the seat and whatever side cover blocks access to the petcock outlet and the hose run down to the carburetor. Slide the old clamps back along the hose with a screwdriver or pliers, then lay a rag under the joint and work the hose off. Rotate it gently on the barb to break the varnish bond rather than yanking, since a fitting on a machine this old does not need extra stress. If the hose has effectively welded itself on, slit it lengthwise with a blade and peel it away instead of pulling.
Note how the original hose was routed before it is fully out. Even on this simple 2x4 layout, the line should sit clear of the exhaust, the throttle cable, and any sharp frame edge, and reproducing the original path is the easiest way to guarantee that.
Fitting the New Hose and Checking for Leaks
Cut the replacement to match the old length with square ends. Resist the urge to leave it long, because slack hose sags against the frame or drifts toward the exhaust. Push each end fully onto its barb until it bottoms out, working it on dry. No grease, no oil, no silicone on the fittings, because any lubricant on the sealing surface gives fuel a path to creep out past the clamp. If the hose is stubborn, dip the end in hot water for thirty seconds to soften it.
Fit new clamps just behind the raised bead on each fitting and tighten them evenly, snug rather than crushing the rubber. Old clamps lose their grip and are not worth reusing on a hose you just paid for. Tighten the float bowl drain screw before you restore fuel flow.
Turn the petcock to on and simply watch. Gravity feed makes this easy: fuel fills the line and the bowl, and any weeping shows up at the joints within a minute or two. Wipe both connections with a clean rag and look again on dry surfaces. Then start the engine, let it idle, and inspect once more with the engine warm and vibrating, since a marginal clamp often reveals itself at that point. Give it several minutes of leak-free running before the bodywork goes back on, and check a final time after a short ride. One habit worth keeping on this Bayou: shut the petcock off when the machine is going to sit, which keeps fuel out of the new line and off the carburetor.
