2025 Unadilla Motocross Recap
Jett Lawrence clinched his second 450 class Motocross Championship with a Round 10 sweep on Saturday at the Unadilla National in New Berlin, NY.
I was a foregone conclusion that a Lawrence would take the title and a likely conclusion Jett would succeed. He didn't have an undefeated season like two years ago but at any rate, a triumphant return from a torn ACL that ended his Supercross campaign in February.
"You work so hard for this and it goes away," he said. "(You think) the first race I'm back I'm winning. The championship I'm winning. I manifest this every time I was at a low point. Pushing through the pain of trying to get my knee to work again. Get, just the muscle back, get it to work. All that pain goes into this. It's great just to come to the championship and have a good run."
Lawrence outpaced his brother Hunter who had an outside shot at the title but unless Jett dabbed his foot and tore an ACL, like last time, little prevented the younger brother from accomplishing his goals - a round early, too.
Hunter Lawrence took second overall on a (2-2) day a week after claiming his first 450 overall and Eli Tomac went (3-3) for third overall and his 79th career podium.
Jett Lawrence had little trouble for the day needing about seven minutes to take the lead in Moto 1, losing it briefly to RJ Hampshire (4-5) after squirreling off the track but, that, proving only a momentary glitch in his race. In Moto 2, he slipped his Honda into the lead (or maybe the Honda slipped him into the lead - he no doubt rides a faster bike than everyone else) just after the Unsponsored $600,000 Holeshot and it was all over.
In the 250 class, Jo Shimoda put the celebration on hold for Doughboy with a resounding sweep including winning Moto 1 by more than 40 seconds. Haven't seen anything like it since Tomac's dominating rides in 2015.
Shimoda still has an outside shot at the 250 title but Doughboy holds a commanding 47 point lead with 50 points left.
The battle for the Championship podiums should highlight the final round of Motocross on Saturday at Budds Creek. Tomac has an outside, yet unlikely, shot at catching Hunter Lawrence for second while Justin Cooper has a decent chance of catching Tomac for third. Shimoda has a lock on second-place for the year while Levi Kitchen will need help ousting Garrett Marchbanks from third being 31 points away from the final spot on the Championship podium.
