2025 Motocross of Nations Recap
USA! USA! USA! Predictably...
Did not win.
The 2025 Motocross of Nations victor went down under to Australia for the second year in a row, a team headed by Jett and Hunter Lawrence.
This year's installment, held Friday through Sunday at Ironman Raceway in Crawfordsville, IN marked the first time since 2022 the United States hosted the "Olympics of Motocross." America sent Eli Tomac, RJ Hampshire and Justin Cooper to compete on behalf of the Stars and Stripes. USA won 2022 des Nations with Tomac, Cooper and Chase Sexton who was selected this year but an injury sustained during the SuperMotocross playoff left him sidelined.
Honorably, the three fought and took second-place on the tie-breaker over France with 33 points. Hampshire was injured in a practice crash the week prior and had a substitute been ready would have bowed out. Tomac raced the MXGP (450) class taking second overall for the class racing to fourth and second in his two races. Cooper also took second overall finishing 10th in both his races for the MX2 (250) class. Riding with injured ribs, Hampshire competed in the Open class taking ninth overall with a seventh in "Moto 1" and crashing out in his second race when he slammed into a TV camera stand.
Australia obliterated the field with 19 points off of Jett Lawrence's (1-3) day in the MXGP class and Hunter sweeping the Open classification. Belgium headed by Lucas Coenen (MXGP) and Liam Everts (Open) took fourth and Slovenia rounded out the Top 5.
Popular favorites stateside for Supercross and Motocross - racing for their home country in the Motocross of Nations - included Jo Shimoda, the 2025 250 class SuperMotocross Champion, who took second overall in the Open class on a (2-6) day racing for Japan, Ken Roczen suiting up for Germany took eighth overall in the MXGP class on a (18-12) day. The semi-retired Antonio Cairoli finished 10th overall in the MXGP class for Italy.
Remember, scores reflect the overall finish in the race not within their class so a 250 (MX2) rider competing against the 450s might be the top rider of the MX2 class. The MXoN uses Olympic style scoring to determine winners. How a rider places determines points thus Tomac netted six points compared to Jett Lawrence's four in the MXGP class. With all points totaled, the worst finished scrubbed, the lowest determines the winning country and who lifts the Chamberlain Trophy.
