2020 Salt Lake City 2 Supercross Recap

Defending 450 class Champion Cooper Webb grabbed the lead from Zach Osborne with just under four minutes on the clock for Round 12 on Wednesday to get his first win since Round 6 and stay in the title hunt for the 2020 Monster Energy Supercross series.

The second of seven rounds raced at Rice-Eccles stadium in Salt Lake City, UT, to finish off the interrupted season from the coronavirus in three week span, featured points leader Eli Tomac coming from behind to reach the podium in second and extend his lead over Ken Roczen, who faded midway to finish in fifth, while Osborne rounded out the podium in third.

Osborne grabbed the holeshot and appeared to check out but as the race wore on Webb and Tomac inched their way forward. A minute after Webb took the lead from Osborne, Tomac also passed him but was unable to catch up to Webb for the win. Webb closed to within 16 points of Roczen in second and shaved three from his deficit to Tomac and now sits 29 points out of the top spot.

Osborne missed part of the season after Round 8 when a practice crash left him with five broken vertebrae, two partially collapsed lungs and a broken right wrist. The suspended season allowed him to heal and resume racing after missing only two rounds.

In the 250 East class, Shane McElrath remained undefeated in Utah with his second straight win of the series and hopefully closing the door to a seemingly quick fade after winning an opening round that has helped define his career. McElrath won on Sunday, the first round back after the near three month season suspension. McElrath opened the East season with a win in Tampa followed by a second, third and fifth place in the following rounds. McElrath also has Salt Lake City wins in 2017 and 2018 and started those seasons with wins but was unable to clinch a Championship.

Now, with three wins on the season, he pulls into a points tie with defending Champion Chase Sexton who finished fifth after getting tangled with another rider dropped him way back. Colt Nichols took second and Jeremy Martin finished third.

Supercross continues with Round 13 (Salt Lake City 3) on Sunday at 2 p.m. (PST) on the NBC Sports Network or Gold app. The 250 East class gets another go before taking a week off. Until then, check out all the action from Round 12. Photos by Ryne Swanberg.
