Ignition Has the Least Margin When Cold

It is asked to ignite a charge that is both cold and deliberately over-rich, a considerably tougher assignment than lighting the balanced mixture the engine burns at operating temperature. Any reduction in spark energy shows itself here before anywhere else.
A plug with a rounded electrode or a light film of deposits often keeps a warm 750 running flawlessly while missing during the few revolutions when combustion must establish itself. Rich cold mixtures also leave residue, and short winter rides rarely get hot enough to clear it, so the situation compounds. If your bike needs multiple attempts on a cold morning and then runs cleanly all day, inspecting all four plugs is inexpensive and knocks out a very likely cause.
Oil Thickness and the Load It Adds
Every hard cold start starts here. Oil becomes markedly more viscous as it cools, and thick oil resists the parts moving through it instead of easing their passage. Main bearings, rod bearings, piston skirts, camshaft journals, and gearbox shafts all drag harder, and the starter must overcome the accumulated resistance before the crank reaches a workable speed.
A four-cylinder engine has a lot of moving hardware for its size, which is why the cranking note sounds noticeably heavier in winter. Thick oil is also slower to reach the cylinder head and build full pressure, and that lag is the concrete reason a brief pause after startup is worth taking in cold weather even though it means nothing in July.
Enrichment: How Much and How Long
With carburetors handling fueling, the choke is a tool you operate rather than a routine the bike performs. Cold gasoline does not want to vaporize, and a cold intake tract condenses part of the vapor before it reaches the chamber, so extra fuel is required for combustion to take hold at all.
Most cold-start frustration traces to two habits. Some riders give the engine too little enrichment for the actual temperature and end up cranking on a mixture that will not light. More commonly, the choke comes off too soon — the engine catches, sounds willing, and then falters because the cylinders have not yet built the heat to run leaner. Hold enrichment longer than feels necessary on a genuinely cold day, then ease it back in stages as the idle rises and holds itself.
The Cold Squeeze on Cranking Power
Batteries produce current through a chemical reaction, and that reaction slows in the cold. Even a battery in good health delivers less to the starter on a freezing morning, and the reduction arrives at the same moment thick oil raises demand. That overlap is what turns a merely marginal battery into a no-start.
Symptoms are fairly distinct: cranking that sounds heavy or slows as it turns, lights dimming while the button is held, and a bike that restarts effortlessly after a ride but refuses after sitting out overnight. On a bike of this age, corroded terminals or a degraded ground can imitate a weak battery exactly, so clean, tight connections matter as much as the battery's age. A maintenance charger during cold spells resolves a large share of these cases.
Once It Idles Without Enrichment, Ride Away
Once the engine will idle cleanly without help from the enrichment circuit, ride away gently rather than letting it sit. Motorcycles reach operating temperature considerably faster under light load than at idle, so a long driveway warm-up mostly wastes fuel after oil has circulated.
The first few miles are where restraint counts. A cold engine has not closed to its intended internal clearances, and the oil film in the upper end is still developing. Older carbureted engines also tend to need a little more time before they feel crisp in cold air, which is a general characteristic of the design rather than a defect. Short shifts and light throttle until the temperature gauge shows real heat is the whole discipline.
The Specific Signals That Point Away From the Weather
A carbureted four wanting a bit of coaxing in freezing weather is behaving normally. The signals that point elsewhere are specific: the bike will not start even with proper enrichment and patience, each winter is clearly harder than the one before, the engine fires and dies repeatedly regardless of how gradually you reduce the choke, or it cannot hold a steady idle even once warm.
Fuel that sat through a long layup leaves varnish in the tiny passages that feed a cold start, and those clog before anything else. Slow cranking that persists after charging or replacing the battery is another line worth respecting, since it usually implicates connections or an unexpected draw. Neither improves with more attempts, which mostly leave unburned fuel in the cylinders, so a direct look at the carburetors and the electrical system is the better move.
