Some cold-start problems announce themselves loudly and others hide behind an engine that runs perfectly the rest of the time. Ignition belongs firmly in the second category. A 1990 EX250 can idle beautifully, pull cleanly to redline, and still make you crank for twenty seconds on a frosty morning, and the reason often sits at the tip of a spark plug.

Why the Ignition System Works Harder in the Cold

Consider the conditions inside the cylinder during a cold start. The air is dense, the fuel is cold and poorly vaporized, and the choke has deliberately made the mixture richer than normal. Lighting that combination reliably takes a strong spark jumping a correct gap, and it has to happen within the first handful of revolutions before the battery begins to sag.

A plug with eroded electrodes or a coating of carbon can manage the far easier job of keeping a hot engine running while failing completely at that first cold ignition. The pattern is unmistakable once you know to look for it: brutal from stone cold, then entirely normal for the rest of the day. Carbureted bikes ridden in winter also foul plugs more quickly, because heavy choke use puts extra fuel through the engine, so this is not a rare cause on a bike like this one.

The Machine Under Discussion

Your 1990 EX250 is carbureted and equipped with electric start, using a liquid-cooled 248cc parallel twin. That configuration frames everything else. Cold enrichment is manual and comes from the choke, so technique genuinely matters. Cranking depends on a battery and starter, so electrical condition matters as well. There is no electronic system compensating for either one.

Drag Around the Crank and Bores Before Combustion Starts

Oil thickens as temperature drops, and thicker oil resists rotation everywhere it sits. Around the crankshaft, along the cylinder bores, and inside the gearbox, that added drag has to be overcome before the twin reaches a speed where combustion can start. The starter therefore works harder and draws more current on a cold morning than it ever does in mild weather.

Slower flow is the second half of the story. Cold oil takes longer to reach the cylinder head, meaning the opening moments of a cold start are the period when protection is least complete. That is the honest justification for a brief warm-up in winter, and it applies universally across motorcycles of every era.

Choke Use That Actually Works

Carburetors meter fuel according to airflow, and cold dense air combined with cold fuel produces a mixture too lean to fire without assistance. The choke provides that assistance by enriching the charge until the engine builds enough heat to run on its own.

Two habits cause most of the trouble. Using only a little choke, on the theory that full enrichment might flood the engine, generally results in extended cranking and a reluctant first fire. Snapping the choke off the moment the engine catches leaves it hunting or stalling, because it needs help for another minute or two. Generous enrichment followed by a gradual reduction as the idle firms up is what this twin responds to.

Cranking Power Falls When It Gets Cold

Battery output declines in cold weather because the internal chemistry slows. That happens at the same moment thick oil increases what the starter needs, and a battery entirely adequate for summer can be left with no margin at all in winter.

Suspect the electrical side when you notice:

  • Cranking that is slow and labored instead of quick
  • Dash lights dimming while the starter runs
  • Easy starts after a ride, hard ones after a cold night
  • A clear improvement after time on a maintenance charger

Batteries lose capacity gradually, so one that has been dependable for several seasons may still be the cause. Keeping the bike on a tender through the cold months removes the question entirely.

Idle Briefly While Easing the Choke, Then Ride Softly

Once the twin fires, let it idle briefly while easing the choke back. A minute or so gives oil time to circulate and lets the idle settle. Extended stationary idling accomplishes less than it feels like it should, because engines warm more efficiently under light load than sitting motionless in the driveway.

What matters more is the first few miles. Clearances have not yet reached their designed dimensions and oil films are still building, so keeping revs moderate until the engine is warm is considerably gentler on pistons, rings, and bearings than a hard launch. This is a small engine that likes rpm, and it will give you plenty once it is up to temperature.

When to Stop Troubleshooting and Get Help

Extra cranking and a longer choke period on a freezing morning is normal for a carbureted machine. It is worth a professional look when the EX250 will not start after several minutes of reasonable effort, when it cannot hold a stable idle long after warm-up, when required attempts keep multiplying, or when the trouble has worsened every winter. Persistent slow cranking after a new battery is another marker. On a bike this old, carburetor cleanliness and fuel delivery are the natural next things to evaluate once battery and ignition have been addressed.
