There is no fuel pump and no pressurized circuit to contend with, which makes this one of the friendlier jobs on the machine. It also means the single hose carries the entire responsibility for keeping the engine fed.
Inspect Before You Order Anything
Get the quad on a stand in good light and follow the hose from the petcock to the carburetor with your fingers as well as your eyes. Healthy fuel line is soft and rebounds when you squeeze it. A hose past its service life feels rigid, sometimes almost brittle, and shows fine surface checking when you flex it — especially in the last inch before each fitting, where it works hardest against vibration. Look for a dark stain or a dusty crust ringing either clamp, which is the residue a slow weep leaves behind. Then think about how the engine has been running. Bogging under hard throttle, a lean stumble partway up a climb, or a hesitation that clears when you back off all point to a fuel supply that is not keeping up, and a hose that has lost its grip on a barb and is pulling air produces exactly that behavior. A puddle under the frame or a heavy gasoline smell in the garage removes any doubt.
What Ages the Rubber
Two processes run in parallel. Externally, heat from the engine and header slowly cooks the plasticizers out of the hose compound. Ultraviolet exposure adds to it, and hot, dry riding regions accelerate the whole cycle noticeably. Internally, ethanol-blended pump fuel is the culprit. Ethanol pulls moisture out of the air, and when a 450XC ATV sits parked for weeks the volatile portion of the fuel evaporates and leaves a varnish behind. That residue works on older hose compounds from the inside while it deposits gum in the carburetor passages downstream. Trail vibration finishes the job by concentrating flex at the fittings until a crack opens up.
Parts, Tools, and a Ventilated Space
- Fuel hose in the correct inside diameter and length for this machine — measure or match the old piece rather than guessing
- New clamps; screw-type worm clamps and spring clamps both work, so long as they suit the hose diameter
- Pliers and a flat screwdriver
- Nitrile gloves
- A sealable jug for drained fuel
- A hose cutter or fresh utility blade
- Rags and a small brush
The gasoline itself deserves genuine respect. Vapor is heavier than air and travels along the floor toward pilot lights, chargers, and heaters, so open the door and get air moving, or simply do the work outside. Wait until the engine and exhaust are stone cold before starting — on a tight sport chassis the pipe sits close enough to the carburetor that a stray drip lands somewhere you do not want it. Keep an extinguisher within reach and take the old fuel to a disposal site.
Off With the Old Line
Close the petcock. On a carbureted quad that is the entire shutoff procedure, which is a real convenience compared to a fuel-injected machine where the line has to be clamped and the pressure relieved before anything comes apart. Remove the seat and any bodywork covering the tank outlet. Open the float bowl drain screw and let what remains in the bowl and hose run into your container. Back the old clamps off, slide them clear, and twist the hose on each barb before pulling. A hose that has been in service for several seasons is often chemically bonded to the fitting; rather than prying and gouging the barb, slit it lengthwise with a blade and peel it off in one piece. Before you toss it, note the routing, including any frame tabs or guides it passed through. The 450XC ATV is a 2WD chassis with a short, direct run — nothing like the detours a 4x4 utility quad forces around front differential hardware.
On With the New
Cut the new hose to match the old one, square across, using the removed piece as a template. Aim for enough slack that engine movement in the frame does not tug on the fittings, but not so much that the hose can sag toward the pipe or foul something when the suspension compresses. Slide both clamps onto the hose before you begin. Work each end fully over its barb until it is seated past the raised ridge, softening stubborn ends in hot water for a minute if they resist. Skip the temptation to lubricate the fittings with grease, oil, or silicone spray. It contaminates the sealing surface and leaves the hose free to walk off the barb once heat and vibration go to work. Set each clamp just behind the barb and snug it evenly — enough to seal, not enough to bite through the rubber.
Confirming a Dry Joint
Reopen the petcock and let fuel refill the line and the float bowl. Give both connections a hard look under bright light for a full two minutes; a slow leak shows up first as a darkening ring at the clamp, not as a visible drip. Wipe everything down, fire the engine, and let it idle to operating temperature before checking again, since some joints only reveal themselves once vibration is in the picture. While the bodywork is off, inspect the tank vent hose and the inline filter if one is fitted, because a plugged filter produces the same starved-for-fuel symptoms you may have been diagnosing. Look the hose over again after your first ride, then work it into your normal pre-ride routine.
