This MotoSport service guide covers a complete, model-specific procedure to flush and replace the brake fluid on a 2011 Can-Am Outlander 650 XT (MMY CAN_AM;OL650XT;2011). Follow the steps exactly to avoid contamination, air in the system, or brake damage.
What you need
- DOT 4 brake fluid (OEM-specified; do not mix with DOT 5 silicone)
- Clear plastic tubing sized for bleed nipples
- Catch bottle for old fluid
- Rubber gloves and safety glasses
- Brake-bleeding kit (vacuum pump or pressure bleeder recommended)
- 10 mm wrench (bleeder nipple), 8 mm or 10 mm for reservoir clamp depending on model
- Clean lint-free rags and isopropyl alcohol
- Torque wrench (for reassembly where specified)
Model notes & cautions for the 2011 Outlander 650 XT
- Factory brake fluid specification is DOT 4. Use only fresh, sealed fluid.
- The Outlander 650 XT uses hydraulic disc brakes front & rear with individual caliper bleed nipples. There is no factory ABS on most 2011 XT models; if your unit has an aftermarket ABS or factory option, consult MotoSport tech before proceeding.
- Bleed nipple size is typically 10 mm. Keep fittings clean & capped when not in use.
- Brake fluid will damage paint & plastics. Protect surfaces and wash spills immediately with water.
- Recommended service interval for brake fluid replacement is every 2 years or when fluid shows darkening/contamination or soft pedal feel.
Preparation
- Work on a level surface. Place the ATV on its center stand or use a lift so wheels can rotate freely.
- Remove any panels necessary to access the calipers and master cylinder reservoir. On the Outlander, the reservoir is under the dash/fairing area – remove trim as needed.
- Clean the reservoir cap area thoroughly to prevent contamination. Remove cap, diaphragm, and strainers carefully.
- Check and top the reservoir to the MAX mark with fresh DOT 4 fluid before starting to avoid running dry during the first bleed cycles.
Bleed order
Use the general rule: start with the wheel furthest from the master cylinder and move toward the closest. For the Outlander 650 XT that typically is:
- Rear right (furthest)
- Rear left
- Front right
- Front left (closest)
If you are unsure which caliper is farthest from the reservoir on your specific machine, identify the master cylinder location and work from the farthest wheel to the nearest.
Two-person pedal-bleeding method (manual)
- Person A sits on the ATV and gently applies steady moderate pressure to the brake lever/pedal and holds it.
- Person B attaches clear tubing to the bleed nipple and places the other end into a catch bottle partially filled with brake fluid to prevent air re-entry.
- With the lever/pedal held, Person B opens the bleed nipple about a 1/4 turn until fluid and bubbles flow; then quickly close the nipple while pressure is still applied.
- Person A releases the lever/pedal slowly. Repeat pumping & hold cycles until no air bubbles appear from that caliper and fluid runs clear and clean.
- Keep the reservoir topped between cycles to avoid drawing air into the master cylinder.
- Proceed to the next wheel in the bleed order and repeat.
Vacuum or pressure-bleeding method (preferred for one person)
- If using a vacuum pump, attach tubing from pump to the bleed nipple and pump while operating the reservoir to maintain fresh fluid level. Open nipple and draw fluid until clear and bubble-free; close nipple before releasing vacuum.
- If using a pressure bleeder, pressurize the reservoir per bleeder instructions (do not exceed manufacturer-recommended pressure), then open each bleed nipple in order until clear fluid flows. Close each nipple before moving on.
- Always keep reservoir topped to MAX during the entire process.
Flushing the system vs. single-caliper bleed
For full replacement of old fluid, perform the above procedure until new fluid appears at the calipers and reservoir. For a complete system flush, use a pressure bleeder or vacuum pump and continually replace reservoir fluid until the system is fully refreshed.
Tightening & final checks
- Torque bleed nipple to factory spec if removed (use light torque; bleed nipples are small – snug is usually sufficient, check service manual for exact value).
- Reinstall and secure reservoir cap & diaphragm. Clean any spilled fluid with isopropyl alcohol and fresh water rinse.
- With the ATV on ground and wheels contacting the floor, test lever & pedal firmness. The lever/pedal should be firm and not spongy.
- Test brakes at low speed in a safe area to confirm proper function before riding normally.
- Inspect caliper fittings, lines, and reservoir for leaks after test rides. Re-check fluid level and top to MAX if needed.
Torque & hardware notes
- Caliper mounting bolts and banjo bolts should be torqued to Can-Am specifications; if exact values are not available, torque to a reasonable OEM-like value (consult your service manual or MotoSport tech if uncertain).
- Replace crush washers on banjo bolts if disturbed or leaking.
Brake pad & bedding reminders
- If pads are worn or contaminated during the service, replace them. Contaminated pads require replacement, not cleaning.
- After new fluid or pads, bed the brakes with progressive stops from low to moderate speed to stabilize friction surfaces.
Disposal & safety
- Dispose of old brake fluid per local regulations — it is hazardous waste.
- Avoid skin contact and wash hands after handling. Do not let brake fluid contact painted surfaces; if it does, rinse immediately.
Troubleshooting
- Spongy pedal after bleeding: likely remaining air or master cylinder issue — repeat bleed, ensure reservoir never runs low.
- Soft brake lever that firms when squeezing but then sinks slowly: check master cylinder seals and caliper pistons for leaks.
- Persistent leaks: inspect rubber hoses for cracks or damage — replace any suspect hydraulic hose immediately.
Follow these steps carefully to ensure safe, reliable braking on your 2011 Can-Am Outlander 650 XT. If you encounter persistent problems or uncertainty, contact MotoSport tech support or a qualified ATV technician for in-person diagnosis and service.
