This MotoSport guide provides a safe, reliable procedure to replace and bleed the brake fluid on a 2008 Can-Am Outlander MAX 650 XT. Follow each step carefully. If you are not comfortable with brake work, have a qualified technician do the job.

Tools & supplies

  • DOT 4 brake fluid (Do not mix DOT 4 with DOT 5)
  • Clear vinyl hose and a clean plastic bottle or catch jar
  • Wrenches to fit bleeder nipples and banjo bolts (typically 8mm-11mm)
  • Brake bleeder wrench or appropriate open-end wrench
  • Clean rags, gloves, eye protection
  • Brake parts cleaner or isopropyl alcohol for cleanup
  • Torque wrench for banjo bolt torque and caliper hardware (factory spec recommended)
  • Optional: vacuum or pressure bleeder for faster bleeding

Notes specific to the 2008 Can-Am Outlander MAX 650 XT

  • The Outlander MAX 650 XT uses DOT 4 brake fluid; DOT rating is critical – do not substitute DOT 5 (silicone) or mix types.
  • There are separate front and rear hydraulic circuits. Bleed each circuit separately and identify the correct reservoir for each circuit before starting.
  • Inspect banjo bolts and copper crush washers when you open lines — replace crush washers any time a hydraulic fitting is disturbed to prevent leaks.
  • Brake lines on the MAX are routed across the frame and rear carrier – check lines for chafing, rubbing, or damage while you have the wheels off and the machine on a stand.
  • The 2008 model does not have advanced ABS hardware, but it can have more than one caliper to service front and rear. Confirm how many bleed nipples you will need to cycle.
  • Keep paint and plastic away from brake fluid — it will damage finishes. Use rags to protect bodywork and frame around reservoirs and calipers.

Preparation

  1. Park the ATV on level ground and secure it with the parking brake off. Place on shop stands so wheels and calipers are accessible but leave the machine stable.
  2. Clean around the master cylinder reservoirs and remove the caps. Wipe away any dirt to prevent contamination.
  3. Identify which reservoir feeds which circuit (front or rear). Label them if needed.
  4. Top each reservoir with fresh DOT 4 fluid until just under the fill line. Keep the cap loose but ready to close between steps to limit air entry.

Bleeding procedure & replacing fluid &ndash step-by-step

Use either a two-person pump-and-hold method or a one-person vacuum/pressure bleeder. The steps below follow the pump-and-hold method; adjust accordingly if you use a pressure system.

  1. Start with the caliper farthest from its reservoir. For the Outlander MAX 650 XT that generally means start with the rear caliper(s) then proceed to front calipers, following farthest-to-nearest sequence for each circuit.
  2. Attach a clear hose to the bleeder nipple and submerge the other end in a small bottle partially filled with fresh brake fluid to prevent air from being drawn back in. Make sure hose fits snugly.
  3. Have an assistant slowly pump the brake lever or pedal 8-10 times, then hold firm pressure on the lever/pedal.
  4. While held, open the bleeder nipple about a 1/4 to 1/2 turn until fluid and air bubbles flow into the catch bottle. Close the nipple before the assistant releases the lever/pedal. Repeat until no air bubbles appear.
  5. After each bleeding cycle, top the reservoir with fresh fluid to maintain level and avoid drawing air into the system. Never let the reservoir run low during bleeding.
  6. Proceed to the next farthest caliper and repeat steps 2-5 until all calipers on the circuit are clear of air.
  7. After finishing a circuit, pump the lever/pedal to check for firmness. If spongy, repeat bleeding for that circuit until the lever/pedal is firm and consistent.
  8. When bleeding is complete, ensure bleeder nipples are tightened to proper snugness. Do not overtighten; use the correct torque if known or tighten to a firm feel and confirm no leaks.
  9. Clean any spilled fluid immediately and replace reservoir caps securely. Wipe components with brake cleaner or isopropyl alcohol to remove contamination.

Replacing all brake fluid (full flush)

  1. To fully replace old fluid, continue bleeding each caliper until the fluid coming out of the bleeder and in the reservoir is clear and matches the new DOT 4 fluid color.
  2. For best results, top reservoir with new fluid, then bleed until the reservoir fills with fresh fluid and the discharge is clear. Repeat for both circuits.
  3. Dispose of used brake fluid properly at a hazardous waste facility or according to local regulations.

Post-bleed checks

  • Verify lever/pedal feel is firm and returns correctly. A soft or sinking pedal indicates trapped air or a leak.
  • Inspect all fittings, banjo bolts, and bleeder nipples for leaks while an assistant applies pressure to the system.
  • Test ride cautiously at low speed to confirm braking performance before returning to full use.
  • Recheck fluid levels and re-torque any hardware after a short test ride.

Maintenance tips & common issues for the MMY Outlander MAX 650 XT

  • Flush brake fluid every 12-24 months or sooner if the fluid appears dark or contaminated. Moisture absorption reduces DOT 4 performance over time.
  • Replace copper crush washers any time a banjo bolt is removed to prevent seepage at the caliper or master cylinder fittings.
  • Inspect caliper pistons for corrosion or sticking — a sticking piston can cause uneven pad wear and reduced braking.
  • Check pad thickness and rotor condition while bleeding. Replace pads that are near minimum thickness and resurface or replace rotors that are scored or warped.
  • Keep a small bottle of DOT 4 on hand for topping off during routine maintenance, and always keep the reservoir caps clean to avoid contamination.

Safety reminders

  • Brake fluid is corrosive to paint and plastic. Protect surfaces and clean spills immediately.
  • Never reuse used fluid. Always use fresh, sealed DOT 4 fluid.
  • If brake performance is not restored after bleeding, stop and consult a technician — do not ride with compromised brakes.

Perform the bleed and fluid replacement methodically, keep the reservoir topped, and inspect all hydraulic components on the 2008 Can-Am Outlander MAX 650 XT for wear or damage while you work. Proper fluid maintenance will preserve braking performance and extend component life.
