The 2022 KTM 125SX is a high-performance motocross machine, and keeping the air filter clean is key to protecting its engine and maintaining peak power. Owners benefit from KTM's tool-free air filter accessa highlight of this specific model yearmaking routine maintenance simpler and faster.
Essential Tools & Supplies
- Motorcycle-specific air filter cleaning solvent
- Foam filter oil (compatible with your cleaning method)
- Nitrile gloves
- Clean water
- Paper towels or a clean lint-free rag
Step 1: Seat & Airbox Cover Removal
The 2022 KTM 125SX features an easy-access airbox design. To start, locate the single seat bolt found near the rear fender. Remove this long bolt – no additional tools are needed. Slide the seat back and lift it off. Then, simply pull the airbox cover off by hand to reveal the filter assembly. You do not need to remove the seat to access the air filter on all modern KTM models, but removing it gives maximum clearance and is recommended for cleaning and inspection convenience.
Step 2: Filter Removal
- Gently pull on the air filter tab to release it from the grommets holding it in the airbox.
- Take care to avoid knocking dirt into the intake tract.
Step 3: Cleaning the Air Filter
- Tap the filter gently to dislodge loose debris.
- Use a biodegradable filter cleaning solution or a solvent designed for foam filters. Submerge the filter and gently massage it clean. Do not use gasoline or harsh solvents.
- Rinse thoroughly with clean water until all cleaner is gone and the water runs clear.
- Squeeze (do not wring) to remove excess water. Never twist the filter as it can damage the foam and seams.
- Allow the filter to air dry completely. You can place it in front of a fan for faster drying; never use high heat.
Step 4: Oiling the Filter
- Once dry, thoroughly apply foam filter oil, making sure all filter surfaces are saturated. Use aerosol or liquid oil as you prefer.
- Massage oil into the foam for even coverage. Avoid leaving dry patches which can let dirt through.
- Squeeze out any excess oil but do not wring the filter.
Step 5: Reinstalling the Filter
- Inspect the airbox for dust or debris and clean as needed.
- Install the filter making sure it seats securely against the seal surface, fully engaging the grommets or tabs as designed.
- Check for proper fit to prevent dirt from bypassing the filter.
When to Replace Your Air Filter
Inspect your filter every ride; KTM recommends frequent servicing under dusty or sandy riding conditions. Replace the filter if it shows signs of tearing, hardened foam, or will not return to shape after cleaning and oiling.
Special Notes for 2022 KTM 125SX Owners
- This model uses KTM's signature quick-release airbox, making maintenance fast and requiring no tools for regular servicing.
- Improper installation of the air filter may let dust bypass, risking severe engine damage. After installing, always double-check the seal before riding.
- Use only cleaners and filter oils approved for foam motorcycle filters to avoid damaging the filter material.
Proper air filter care ensures your KTM 125SX delivers maximum performance while extending engine life on every ride.
