Replacing the steering stem bearings on the 2018 Alta Redshift MX is one of those jobs that pays off immediately in restored handling feel and front-end confidence. These bearings live in a demanding environment: they absorb every impact the front wheel takes, fight constant moisture and grit intrusion, and pivot under load through thousands of cycles each ride. When they wear out, the result is notchiness, vagueness, and a steering stem that no longer feels precise.

The Forces That Wear Out Steering Stem Bearings

The Redshift MX’s steering stem bearings are under load every time the bike is moving, but the most destructive loading happens during impact. Hard landings, square-edged hits, and aggressive braking all send spike loads through the fork legs into the steering stem, which transmits that force into the upper and lower bearing races. Tapered or caged ball bearings are designed to handle these loads, but they are not indestructible.

Time and moisture are equally destructive on the Redshift MX even during periods of lower use. A bike that sits between rides—especially in a damp environment or after being washed—can have moisture migrate into the steering stem housing and begin corroding the bearing surfaces while the bike is parked. Grease that has emulsified or dried out from heat and age no longer protects the metal surfaces the way fresh, properly packed grease does.

What You’ll Need for the Job

The steering stem bearing job on the Redshift MX is manageable at home with the right equipment. A proper motocross or paddock stand is the foundation—you need the front wheel clear of the ground and the bike stable throughout the procedure.

The Redshift MX uses tapered roller bearings in the steering stem from the factory, so you’ll need a complete tapered roller bearing kit sized for this model—upper and lower bearing cones, cups, and seals. Use a quality kit from a reputable supplier; cheap bearings in the steering stem are a false economy given how much effort the job requires.

Recognizing Worn Steering Stem Bearings

On the Redshift MX, steering stem bearing wear usually makes itself known gradually rather than all at once. Early wear shows up as a subtle notchy feeling when sweeping the bars slowly lock to lock with the front wheel off the ground—a slight resistance or sticking point near the center that wasn’t there when the bearings were fresh. This is easy to mistake for normal steering friction until it becomes more pronounced.

Two additional checks help confirm the diagnosis. First, with the Redshift MX on a stand and the front wheel on the ground, grip the fork legs near the axle and push and pull fore and aft. Any detectable movement at the junction between the lower triple clamp and the steering neck indicates bearing play.

Taking Apart the Front End

Disassembly on the Redshift MX follows a logical sequence from outermost to innermost. Begin at the front wheel: remove the axle, drop the wheel clear, and set it aside. The front fender comes off next. Undo the handlebar clamps or bar mounts and secure the bar-and-controls assembly to the frame with a cable tie or wire, keeping brake lines and cables connected if possible to avoid bleeding brakes later.

Now the steering stem and triple clamps are accessible on the Redshift MX. Remove any bolts holding the top triple clamp to the stem, then locate the large stem nut underneath it. Use the correct size stem nut wrench to break and remove the stem nut; expect it to be tight. The top triple clamp lifts off, leaving only the stem nut’s lower washer or lock ring if equipped.

Checking the Old Bearings and Pulling the Races

Examine the old bearing hardware before removing the races from the Redshift MX’s frame. The condition of the bearing elements tells you what kind of service the bearings have seen. Clean off the old grease with a rag and look at the contact surfaces: areas that show bright polishing on ball or roller surfaces indicate the load zones; flat spots at those polished areas indicate the bearing was run past its service life.

To remove the old races from the Redshift MX’s steering neck, use a drift or race removal tool that contacts the back face of the race rather than the bore wall. Drive the race out gradually, moving the contact point around the circumference to prevent the race from cocking in the bore.

New Race and Bearing Installation

Press the new races into the Redshift MX’s steering neck using a driver that contacts the full face of the race rather than the center. The race must go in straight—if it tilts even a few degrees as it enters the bore, it will bind before reaching full depth and won’t seat correctly. Check alignment constantly as you drive. If the race starts to tilt, stop and correct it by driving lightly from the high side before continuing.

Pack the lower tapered roller bearing cone with fresh grease, working it thoroughly into the space between the rollers and cage. Coat the upper bearing as well. Once both races are seated squarely in the Redshift MX’s neck, reassemble the stem through the neck with the lower tapered bearing in place upward from below the frame, seating the lower bearing into its race as the stem enters the neck.

Getting Preload Right and Buttoning Everything Up

Steering preload on the Redshift MX is set by the stem nut torque, and getting it right is worth the time it takes. Thread the top triple clamp back onto the stem and install the stem nut finger-tight first. Then snug the nut incrementally, sweeping the bars lock-to-lock after each quarter-turn to feel for the transition between loose and binding.

Before the final torque check on the Redshift MX, reinstall the fork tubes and snug the triple clamp pinch bolts; the slight compression of clamping the fork tubes into the clamps changes the preload marginally and should be accounted for before the final feel check. Install the front wheel and torque the axle, then reattach the fender and bars. Take the bike off the stand and walk it forward a few feet, turning the bars to both sides.
