It sends signals for weeks or months first, and riders who learn to read them get to do this job in the garage on their own schedule instead of on a trailside with a wet skid plate. The 2023 KingQuad 500AXi gives you plenty of clues if you know what to watch and touch.
Warning Signs on the Machine
Run a genuine inspection rather than a glance:
- Check the floor and skid plate for a fuel puddle or a damp outline that comes back after the quad sits
- Notice any gasoline smell that lingers well after shutdown, which on a pressurized system usually shows up before a drip does
- Look for surface cracking, chalkiness, or swelling along the hose, with special attention to bends
- Pinch the hose in several places, feeling for rigid sections that no longer compress
- Take note of running problems that suggest starvation, including bogging under load and a lean stumble on hard throttle
The last item matters more than owners expect. A partially collapsed or internally degraded hose restricts flow before it ever leaks, so a machine that feels flat under load may be telling you about the hose rather than the injector.
Injection on This Model, Not a Carburetor
The AXi suffix confirms Suzuki electronic fuel injection on your 2023 KingQuad, so the layout differs from an older carbureted quad in ways that affect every step. There is no petcock to shut off flow, no float bowl drain, and no gravity feed. A pump inside the tank pressurizes the hose that carries fuel to the throttle body, and the system holds pressure after shutdown. Because of that, you relieve pressure electrically instead of closing a valve, you buy hose rated for injection pressure instead of the soft type sold for carbureted machines, and you may find a self–locking coupler rather than a barb and clamp at the tank end.
The Mechanics of Hose Deterioration
Two things age the rubber at once. Engine heat drives the softeners out of the wall over years of cycling, taking the hose from flexible to stiff to cracked, and dry climates hurry it along by pulling moisture from the material continuously. Meanwhile, ethanol–blended pump gas draws water into the fuel and slowly degrades the liner from within, with any period of sitting leaving gum and varnish at the fittings.
The practical takeaway is that a hose can pass a visual check while failing internally. That is why replacement decisions on a machine of this age should lean on time in service and feel, not just what the outside looks like under a flashlight.
Supplies and a Ventilated Workspace
Set out gloves, eye protection, injection–rated hose in the correct inside diameter, new clamps of the matching style, a quick–disconnect release tool if needed, line–clamping pliers, an approved fuel container, a catch pan, rags, a socket set, and a plastic trim tool.
Give real thought to where you work. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air and settles along the floor rather than escaping through an open window at head height, and that floor is where heaters, work lights, and appliance pilots typically sit. Move the quad outdoors or open the overhead door completely so there is airflow at ground level. Keep every ignition source out of the space and an extinguisher within reach for as long as fuel is exposed.
Getting the Old Line Off
Depressurize before touching a fitting: pull the fuel pump fuse or relay, crank until the engine dies, turn the key off, and disconnect the battery negative. Remove the seat and side plastics to expose the tank connection, then trace the hose to the throttle body. Slide the catch pan underneath and drape a rag over each joint as you open it, since fuel remains in the hose.
Move clamps well back along the hose before disturbing the fittings. Locking connectors release with even pressure on both tabs and a straight pull; levering sideways cracks aged plastic. Where varnish has bonded the hose to a barb, twist gently to break it loose, and if it holds fast, slit the hose lengthwise with a blade and peel it away rather than pulling hard on a fitting you want to keep. Note the routing before the hose is fully out, since this selectable 4x4 threads the line past front differential hardware and additional frame clearance points.
Installation and Clamping
Cut the new hose to the same length as the old one, then push each end fully onto its barb until it bottoms. Install it dry, with no grease, oil, or silicone anywhere near the sealing surface, because lubricant there is precisely what lets pressurized fuel creep out past a clamp. A brief soak of the hose end in hot water makes a tight fit cooperate.
Place new clamps just behind the raised bead on each fitting and tighten them evenly, firm without cutting into the rubber. A self–locking quick–connect takes no clamp; push until it clicks and confirm with a solid pull. Route the finished hose back through every factory clip so it stays clear of the front driveline and hot exhaust.
Signing Off on the Job
Refit the fuse, Reconnect the battery, and cycle the key on and off several times without cranking so the pump pressurizes the hose while the engine is still. Inspect both joints in that quiet state, dry them with a clean rag, then start the 500AXi and look again at idle and after several minutes of warm running before the plastics go back on.
One last note about this platform: the fuel filter on the injected 500AXi lives inside the tank as part of the pump assembly rather than inline where you can reach it. A new hose ends a leak, but a clogged in–tank filter causes the same starvation symptoms and is the next place to look if the engine still hesitates.
