The 2021 Rancher 420 is fuel injected, so the hose you are chasing carries pressurized fuel from a pump module inside the tank down to the throttle body, and no petcock exists anywhere in that path to shut it off. That single design fact shapes the tools you need and the order you work in.

Uncovering the Line and Reading Its Path

Pull the seat first, then remove the body panels that cover the tank and shield the run toward the throttle body. With the plastics out of the way you can follow the hose end to end, examine each retaining clip, and see the sections that vibration and heat punish most. Being a four wheel drive machine, this Rancher carries a front differential and the frame structure that supports it, which pushes the line along a slightly longer path with more clearance points than the equivalent hose on a two wheel drive quad. Photograph the routing now, while everything is still factory correct, because matching that path on reassembly is what keeps your new hose away from the exhaust and the front driveline.

The Reasons Rubber Fuel Line Wears Out

Flexible fuel hose stays flexible only as long as its plasticizers remain in the compound, and repeated heat cycling drives them out over the years. The result is a hose that feels hard and glassy instead of springy. Hard hose stops absorbing chassis vibration, so movement concentrates at the two fittings where the rubber is stretched over a barb, and that is where the first splits appear, conveniently hidden under a clamp.

Two more forces work on it constantly. Dry, low humidity air pulls moisture out of the hose wall, which is why machines in arid country stiffen up years sooner than identical quads in wet regions. Ethanol blended gasoline does its damage internally, absorbing moisture while the Rancher sits idle and breaking the liner down into gum and loose particles. On an injected engine those particles are headed for very small passages, so what happens inside the hose matters as much as the cracks you can see outside.

Symptoms Worth Chasing Down

Supplies, Ventilation, and Handling Fuel

Gasoline vapor is heavier than air, so it drifts downward and pools at floor level rather than venting out a high window. Relieving Pressure and Pulling the Hose

Break the varnish bond by rotating the hose on the barb, then draw it off, and if it will not release, split it lengthwise with the razor and peel it away instead of straining the fitting. Keep track of clips as the line comes out so nothing is skipped on the way back in.

Assembly and the Final Pressure Check

Cut the replacement to the original length. Extra hose sags into the frame or wanders toward hot exhaust, while a short piece pulls at both fittings as the engine rocks on its mounts. Push each end fully onto its fitting until it bottoms out against the shoulder, and do everything dry. No grease, oil, or silicone touches a fuel fitting here, because lubricant on the sealing surface gives pressurized fuel a path past the clamp and can be washed into the injection system. Hot water for a few seconds is the correct way to soften a stiff end.

Set new clamps just behind the raised bead on each fitting and tighten them evenly, snug without deforming the rubber. A self locking quick connect needs no clamp at all, only a firm push until the collar clicks and a solid tug to confirm it latched. Return the hose to its factory clips and confirm the clearances you photographed earlier.

Reinstall the fuse, Reconnect the battery, and cycle the key on and off several times without cranking. The pump primes on each cycle, pressurizing the line while you inspect both joints for the first sign of dampness. Once they stay dry, start the engine, wipe the fittings with a clean rag, and watch them idle for several minutes before the panels go back on. One closing note specific to this injected Rancher: the fuel filter sits inside the tank as part of the pump assembly rather than inline where you could service it, so if delivery still feels weak after a clean hose install, that module is the next place to look.
