There is no electric pump, no pressure to relieve, and no risk of a fitting spraying when it releases. Turn the fuel valve to OFF and the supply stops. Recognizing a Hose That Is Finished

Do not dismiss the hose because the floor is dry. A gravity system with a crack above the fuel level draws air in rather than pushing fuel out, and that starves the carburetor under load while leaving no puddle to find. Behavior and feel matter as much as what you can see.

What Breaks Down Inside That Rubber

Fuel hose ages chemically rather than mechanically. Repeated heat cycles from the 660 single drive off the plasticizers that keep the wall soft, and the hose ends up stiff and slightly contracted so it can no longer conform to the barb inside the clamp. Dry, low-humidity climates accelerate the process by pulling moisture from the material, which produces the fine surface checking that eventually becomes a real crack.

Ethanol-blended gasoline works the interior. Alcohol draws water into the fuel and gradually degrades the inner liner, softening it while the outside grows brittle, and loose material heads for the carburetor jets. Fuel that sits for an extended stretch evaporates and leaves varnish, bonding the hose to its fittings and hiding early seepage under a dried crust. Both processes are quiet, which is why age is a legitimate reason to replace.

Tools, Parts, and Ventilation

Stage gloves, eye protection, a drain pan, an approved sealed container, replacement hose in the original inside diameter, new clamps or a clamp assortment, a flat-blade screwdriver and pliers to handle whichever clamps you find, hand tools for the seat and plastics, and a generous pile of clean rags. Line-clamping pliers are a convenience rather than a requirement here, given the petcock.

Now the safety note that deserves attention. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air, which means it sinks and gathers at floor level under the machine, precisely where you are lying while you work. Ventilation has to happen low to matter: work outdoors, or open the bay wide and put a fan on the floor moving air outward. Keep flames, sparks, and hot incandescent lights well away, and set an extinguisher on the ground within reach before you start.

Draining Down and Removing the Old Hose

Close the fuel valve and confirm the flow has genuinely stopped, because a worn petcock can seep past its seal. Position the drain pan under the carburetor, loosen the float bowl drain screw, and let the bowl empty into your container. Pull the seat and any bodywork that blocks a clear look at the hose from the valve to the carburetor.

Slide both clamps well back along the hose before you disturb the fittings, and lay a rag over the joint you are opening. Break the varnish bond with a gentle twist instead of a hard pull. Hose that stays locked on gets slit lengthwise with a razor blade and peeled away — far better than levering it and risking a bent brass spigot on the fuel valve or a damaged carburetor inlet. Keep the old hose to measure the new one against.

Study the routing before it comes fully out. Being a 4x4, this Grizzly has a front differential and driveline hardware occupying the forward chassis, and the hose follows a specific path through frame clearance points to stay off the exhaust and clear of moving parts. Photograph each clip so reassembly is not guesswork.

Fresh Hose, Correct Technique

Push each end fully onto its barb until it bottoms against the shoulder, and assemble everything dry. Grease, oil, and silicone spray on a fuel fitting create the exact leak path you are trying to eliminate, so keep them entirely off the sealing surfaces. Thirty seconds in hot water softens a hose end that resists.

Place the new clamps just behind the raised bead on each fitting and tighten them evenly — firm enough to seal without cutting into the rubber. Snap the hose back into all its original guides and confirm by hand that it clears the header and the front driveline before you reassemble anything.

Restoring Flow and Signing Off

Snug the float bowl drain screw, open the fuel valve, and watch. Gravity fills the bowl in seconds, so a bad joint announces itself almost immediately. Wipe both the valve end and the carburetor end, then check them with clean, dry fingers — any dampness on new rubber is your cue to reseat or retighten before you ride rather than after.

Start the engine, let it idle for several minutes, and inspect both joints again with a fresh rag while paying attention to the smell of the air near the carburetor. Bodywork goes back on only after a clean run. Since you are already in the area, glance at the tank vent hose and any inline filter your 660 carries, because a pinched vent or plugged filter creates the same fuel-starved behavior and is easy to address while everything is open.
