If you have owned your 2024 Suzuki DRZ400S more than a few seasons, the fuel line deserves a hard look. It is a wear item almost nobody thinks about until it fails, and the failure is rarely graceful. Replacing the hose costs a few dollars, and doing it early beats doing it trailside with a leaking tank.
Start by Tracing the Fuel Path
The fuel system on your 2024 Suzuki DRZ400S uses a carburetor, and the petcock is your shutoff. Fuel flows by gravity alone from tank to float bowl through one hose, secured at each end by a spring pinch clamp or a small screw clamp. The failure is chemical and thermal more than mechanical. Fuel hose stays soft because of additives in the rubber, and those additives leave over time — faster in heat, faster still in the dry air of an arid climate. A hose in that state has lost its ability to seal around a barb, so it seeps before it visibly splits. Fuel left standing does its own damage: ethanol blends draw in moisture and degrade after months of sitting, and the byproducts attack rubber and leave sticky residue. Getting Set Up Before You Start
Assemble everything first. Once the line is off, you do not want to be driving to the parts store with an open fuel system.

Working the Original Hose Free

Hardened line often resists — a gentle rotating pull beats brute force, and if it truly will not budge, slit the hose lengthwise with a blade and peel it off rather than levering on the fitting.
Installing the Replacement Hose
Trim the replacement to the same length as the original. Guessing causes problems at both ends of the range — excess hose finds something hot to lean against, and a short hose loads the fittings every time the engine moves. Cut cleanly and squarely.
Fit the tank-side end first, sliding the hose past the full barb until it bottoms out. If the line is stiff from sitting on a shelf, dip the end in hot water. Do not lubricate: no grease, no oil, no assembly lube on a fuel fitting. Beyond weakening the seal, it introduces contamination into the fuel your DRZ400S is about to run.
Connect the carburetor end and look at the whole run before securing anything. The hose should mirror the factory routing with clearance from the exhaust and no kinks. Then set both clamps directly over the barbed sections and tighten just enough to compress the rubber. Over-torquing a screw clamp scores the hose and creates a leak path over time.
Confirming It Is Sealed
With the new line in place, open the petcock and stop. Let the 2024 Suzuki DRZ400S sit five minutes over a clean surface and use that time to examine both joints under a flashlight. A properly seated hose stays completely dry; anything else needs attention before the wheels turn.
The running test comes second. Fire the engine, let it warm, and look again — expansion and vibration find seals that hold fine cold and still. When you find a weep, resist the urge to overtighten. Disconnect, verify the hose is pushed fully over the barb, and reassemble; that is nearly always the actual problem.
