A cracked fuel line seems trivial until it strands you at the far end of a trail or drips onto a hot pipe. On a 2020 Yamaha YZ250X, the fuel line is a short, inexpensive piece of rubber doing a job with zero tolerance for failure — and replacing it is well within reach with basic hand tools and about half an hour.
Symptoms Worth Catching Early
A fuel line rarely fails without hinting first. Run through this list before loading the YZ250X up, particularly if the bike has been sitting.
- Fuel staining at either fitting. Seepage shows up at the barbs before anywhere else.
- Persistent gasoline smell. If you smell fuel with the bike cold and untouched, something is leaking.

Dry, hot storage accelerates that, pulling volatiles out faster than a temperate garage would. Ethanol-blended pump fuel left sitting in the hose adds a second mechanism, attacking the inner wall and leaving gum that can flake into the fuel path on a 2020 Yamaha YZ250X.
Know the YZ250X Fuel Layout First
The 2020 Yamaha YZ250X runs a carbureted fuel system, which works in your favor. Fuel leaves the tank through a petcock — the small valve underneath — travels down a short rubber hose, and enters the carburetor at the float bowl inlet. Getting the Old Line Out of the Way

Installing the Replacement Hose
Trim the replacement to the same length as the original. Guessing causes problems at both ends of the range — excess hose finds something hot to lean against, and a short hose loads the fittings every time the engine moves. Cut cleanly and squarely.
Fit the tank-side end first, sliding the hose past the full barb until it bottoms out. If the line is stiff from sitting on a shelf, dip the end in hot water. Do not lubricate: no grease, no oil, no assembly lube on a fuel fitting. Beyond weakening the seal, it introduces contamination into the fuel your YZ250X is about to run.
Connect the carburetor end and look at the whole run before securing anything. The hose should mirror the factory routing with clearance from the exhaust and no kinks. Then set both clamps directly over the barbed sections and tighten just enough to compress the rubber. Over-torquing a screw clamp scores the hose and creates a leak path over time.
Confirming It Is Sealed
Restore fuel flow and watch. Open the petcock on your 2020 Yamaha YZ250X and leave the bike sitting several minutes with clean cardboard underneath. Gravity finds a poor seal quickly. Look at both fittings with good light, and run a dry fingertip around each joint — fuel is easier to feel than to see.
Then start the engine and check again warm. Vibration and heat expose leaks a static test misses. If you see weeping at a clamp, do not simply crank it tighter; pull the joint apart and confirm the hose was fully seated on the barb, because an unseated hose will not seal at any clamp torque.
Finally, tidy up.
