Maintaining your 2018 Beta 500 RR-S is key to its riding performance – and oil changes are a critical part of that. The 500 RR-S is unique for its separate engine and transmission oil systems, each requiring its own oil change procedure. Here is your exclusive MotoSport step-by-step guide.
Essential Tools & Supplies
- 13mm socket & ratchet
- 8mm socket (for oil filter cover & skid plate)
- Drain pan
- Replacement oil filters (engine)
- Replacement o-rings for filter cover, drain bolts, and filler caps
- Liqui Moly 10W-50 Synthetic Oil – 750ml for engine, 750ml for transmission (minimum Beta spec)
- Torque wrench (capable of 10 Nm, 15 Nm, 20 Nm)
- Clean rags
Oil Change Procedure (Engine & Transmission)
- Warm up the bike for 2-3 minutes to ensure oil flows easily, then turn off and let it cool just enough to handle safely.
- Remove the skid plate using 8mm bolts to access drain and filter areas.
-
Engine oil:
- Place drain pan below the engine drain bolt (front left, slightly larger, contains a pre-screen).
- Using a 13mm socket, remove the engine oil drain bolt. Allow oil to drain thoroughly.
- Remove the two 8mm bolts on the oil filter cover. Carefully remove the cover, oil filter, and its o-ring.
-
Transmission oil:
- Locate the transmission drain bolt on opposite side (also 13mm socket).
- Remove the transmission drain bolt and allow full drainage.
- Replace o-rings on both drain bolts, filter cover, and filler caps to prevent leaks.
- Install new oil filter: The open ends should face the engine, solid to the cover. Fit new o-ring and cap. Torque filter cover bolts to 10 Nm.
-
Reinstall drain bolts:
- Torque engine drain bolt to 15 Nm.
- Torque transmission drain bolt to 20 Nm.
-
Fill oil:
- Add 750 ml Liqui Moly 10W-50 to the engine side.
- Add 750 ml Liqui Moly 10W-50 to transmission side.
- Replace o-rings on oil filler caps, install & tighten securely.
-
Check oil level:
- Run engine for 2 minutes, then check sight glass. Oil should settle within red circle.
- Do NOT overfill – Beta's system is sensitive to oil levels.
- Reinstall skid plate.
2018 Beta 500 RR-S Owner Notes
- This model has separate engine & transmission oil cavities. Both must be serviced independently with the full recommended oil volume.
- No dipstick: rely on the sight glass for engine oil – transmission fill has no visual check, so precise measurement (750 ml) is crucial. Overfilling affects performance.
- Beta recommends fresh o-rings each change – reusing can cause leaks due to deformation.
- Always use the specified oil weight – 10W-50 premium synthetic – for proper clutch and gearbox lubrication.
- This model's filter orientation is important; improper fitment reduces flow and protection.
Final Checks & Tips
- Start the bike after filling. Let idle for 2-3 minutes. Check for leaks.
- Re-confirm oil height in sight glass with bike vertical on level ground.
- Dispose of used oil properly – follow local environmental guidelines.
Performing regular oil changes keeps your Beta's engine and transmission performing at their peak – and ensures smooth rides wherever the trail takes you.
