How to Change the Oil in a 2007 Suzuki DRZ250

Tools & Supplies Needed

  • Ratchet with correct sockets (commonly 17mm for the drain plug and 8mm for oil filter cover bolts)
  • Torque wrench
  • Drain pan
  • Clean rags
  • Rubber gloves (optional for cleaner hands)
  • Replacement oil filter (K&N KN-136 or equivalent for DRZ250)
  • SAE 10W-40 motorcycle oil (full synthetic preferred)–check owner’s manual for capacity; typically slightly less than 2 quarts for DRZ250
  • New drain plug washer (recommended, to ensure a proper seal)
  • Funnel (for easier pouring)

Steps to Change the Oil

  • Warm up the Engine
    Start your DRZ250 and let it idle for 3-5 minutes. Warm oil drains more easily and carries out more contaminants.
  • Prepare Your Work Area
    Turn off the bike, place it on a stable stand, and position the drain pan directly beneath the oil drain plug.
  • Remove Oil Filler Cap
    Unscrew the oil filler cap on the engine case to allow air in for better oil flow during draining.
  • Drain the Old Oil
    Use your ratchet and the appropriate socket (usually 17mm) to remove the drain plug found on the bottom of the engine. Allow the oil to fully drain into your pan.
  • Inspect and Replace the Washer
    Inspect the drain plug washer for cracks or excessive wear. Replace it if necessary to avoid leaks.
  • Reinstall Drain Plug
    Clean the threads on the plug. Reinstall the drain plug and torque it to factory specs (commonly around 16.5 lb-ft for Suzuki drain plugs, verify in your service manual).
  • Replace the Oil Filter
    Locate the oil filter cover (typically on the engine's right side). Remove the cover bolts (commonly 8mm socket). Pull out the old filter. Replace it with a new K&N KN-136 or equivalent, noting the correct orientation (spring-side usually faces inward).
    • Before installing, lightly coat the new filter gasket with fresh oil for optimal sealing.
    • Reinstall the cover and bolts. Do not overtighten—snug by hand and then a gentle turn with the wrench. Overtightening risks squishing or tearing the filter or gasket (specific to DRZ250—be gentle to avoid ruining the gasket).
  • Add New Oil
    Using your funnel, pour in the recommended amount of SAE 10W-40 oil. Replace the filler cap.
  • Check Oil Level
    Start the bike and let it idle for 1-2 minutes. Shut the engine off and let oil settle for another minute. Check oil level with the dipstick or inspection window; add oil if needed.
  • Clean Up
    Wipe down any spilled oil, dispose of the old oil responsibly (take it to a recycling center), and check for leaks.
