Shop parts for your ride now.

Proper cooling is essential for peak performance and longevity in your 2024 Yamaha YZ450FX. If your bike is due for a coolant change or you've noticed the coolant is dirty, low, or it's been a year since service, follow this MotoSport-exclusive step-by-step guide to keep your YZ450FX running at its best. The process is straightforward with basic hand tools, but always work with a cool engine and wear eye protection when handling coolant.

Tools & Supplies Needed

  • New coolant (Yamaha recommends a high-quality ethylene glycol-based coolant designed for aluminum engines)
  • Basic hand tools (screwdrivers, socket set, pliers)
  • Drain pan
  • Shop rags
  • Gloves and safety glasses

Step 1 – Preparation

  • Ensure the bike is cool to the touch. Never open the radiator cap on a hot engine, as pressurized coolant can cause burns.
  • If you have a skid plate or any accessory that blocks access to the water pump area, remove it now.

Step 2 – Remove the Radiator Cap

  • Place the bike upright on a stand.
  • Put a thick rag over the radiator cap. Slowly turn the cap counterclockwise to release any residual pressure, then remove the cap completely. This prevents accidental spray from residual pressure in the system.

Step 3 – Drain the Old Coolant

  • Locate the coolant drain bolt on the water pump cover (right-hand side of the engine).
  • Position your drain pan under the water pump, then remove the drain bolt. A small copper washer may be present – avoid losing it.
  • Open the radiator cap fully if you have not already – this will help the coolant flow out completely.
  • Tip: You can also remove the lowest radiator hose clamp and hose connection for additional drainage, but it's not strictly required.

Step 4 – Flush if Desired

  • If your coolant was especially dirty or contaminated, pour a small amount of distilled water into the radiator, reinstall the drain bolt, then run the engine briefly. Drain again to flush out debris. Repeat until the water runs clear.

Step 5 – Reinstall the Drain Bolt

  • Inspect the drain bolt and washer for damage or corrosion; replace if necessary.
  • Thread the drain bolt back into the water pump cover by hand, then torque to the manufacturer's specification (consult your YZ450FX owner manual or tech sheet).

Step 6 – Refill with Fresh Coolant

  • Slowly pour new coolant into the radiator neck. Add until the fluid level is just beneath the inner lip of the radiator filler neck.
  • Tap radiator hoses gently and squeeze to help release any trapped air bubbles as you fill.

Step 7 – Bleed Air from the System

  • With the radiator cap off, start the engine and let it idle for several minutes while monitoring the coolant level. Add fluid as needed to maintain the level.
  • Check for leaks at the drain bolt, hoses, and the radiator cap seat.

Step 8 – Final Top-Off & Secure

  • Once air bubbles stop rising and coolant settles, shut the engine off. Let it cool, then re-check and top off coolant if necessary.
  • Reinstall the radiator cap securely.
  • Wipe up any spilled fluids.

YZ450FX Model-Specific Notes

  • The 2024 YZ450FX features a high-compression, closed-course competition engine. Keeping the cooling system fresh is critical for preventing overheating during prolonged or aggressive riding.
  • This model uses lightweight, high-capacity radiators – inspect for bent fins and clean as needed to maintain airflow.
  • Check your coolant after each major ride, as this engine is tuned for performance and may run hotter than trail-specific models.
  • Yamaha recommends checking the radiator cap seal and replacing it if cracked or if mineral deposits are present, as a weak cap can cause coolant loss or overheating.

Coolant Handling & Safety Tips

  • Dispose of old coolant safely – follow local hazardous waste regulations.
  • If coolant contacts skin, wash immediately with soap and water. If swallowed, seek medical help at once.
