- Ensure the engine is completely cool before servicing to prevent burns.
- The DRZ400SM's radiator caps and drain locations are easily accessible with the removal of the left side cover.

Step-by-Step Coolant Change

Remove the Left Side Panel
Use a 12 mm socket to remove the left side cover. This provides access to the water pump and coolant drain bolt. -
Remove the Radiator Cap
The cap is found on the right radiator. Remove it to allow for smooth draining and prevent vacuum lock during the process. -
Locate and Remove the Drain Bolt
The coolant drain bolt is on the lower side of the water pump. Position a catch pan underneath and remove the bolt. Let the old coolant fully drain.
Tip: Slightly tilting the bike from side to side ensures more complete drainage. -
Reinstall the Drain Bolt
Replace the washer if necessary and snug the drain bolt securely. Do not overtighten. -
Flush the System (Optional but Recommended)
If switching brands or the coolant is heavily contaminated, fill the system with distilled water, run the engine briefly, then repeat the drain process above. Complete two flushes for best results. -
Address Bleed Screws (Model-Specific Note)
The DRZ400SM features a slotted air purge (bleed screw) on the water neck at the top front of the cylinder head. Open it a few turns–not all the way out. Some DRZ models may not have this, so check your water neck's orientation. -
Fill with New Coolant

Bleed Trapped Air
Open the air bleed screw at the top of the left radiator (if equipped). As coolant escapes here, retighten it.
Lean the bike to the left and right ten degrees several times, allowing trapped bubbles to rise. Top off coolant again. -
Reinstall Radiator Cap
With the right radiator full and all bleed screws tight, reinstall the cap. -
Check and Fill the Overflow Reservoir
Add coolant up to the full line in the overflow bottle, not exceeding recommended levels. -
Start and Warm the Engine
Let the bike idle for several minutes to bring it to operating temperature. Watch the coolant level and the temperature gauge; shut off engine if overheating is noticed.
Allow the engine to cool, then check and top off coolant if needed.
