Step-by-Step Coolant Change Procedure
- Ensure Safety: Start with a completely cool engine. Place the bike upright on a stand.
- Remove Access Panels: On the DRZ400SM, use the 12mm wrench or socket to remove the left-side plastic panel for better access to the water pump and drain bolt.
- Open the Radiator Cap: Locate the radiator cap (top of the right radiator). Remove it to allow air to enter as the old coolant drains, ensuring a thorough flow.
- Drain Coolant: Position a drain pan beneath the water pump (lower left side of the engine). Remove the coolant drain bolt and washer using a 12mm wrench. Let all coolant completely drain. Inspect the bolt and washer–replace if damaged.
- Flush (Optional): Pour distilled water into the radiator, reinstall the drain bolt, and briefly run the engine to circulate and remove old residues. Repeat draining, then reinstall the bolt again.
- Reinstall Drain Bolt: Tighten the drain bolt securely but do not overtighten.

Refill Coolant: Slowly pour new 50/50 coolant into the right radiator using a funnel. The DRZ400SM features a bleeder screw on the left radiator and some have one on the water neck at the cylinder head. Open each one a few turns to allow air to escape as you fill. Once coolant begins to come out of the bleeder, tighten it gently to seal. Continue filling until the right radiator is topped up
- Burp the System: With the bike vertical, gently lean it left and right a few times to bring any hidden air bubbles to the top. Top off as needed.
- Reinstall Radiator Cap: Secure the cap on the right radiator.
- Start the Engine: Run the bike at idle until it reaches operating temperature. Watch the temperature closely–trapped air can cause overheating.
- Re-check Coolant Level: Once the bike cools, open the right radiator cap. Top off if the level dropped.
- Top the Overflow Tank: Add coolant until the overflow bottle is filled to the upper line (about 1 inch).
- Reinstall Panels: Replace any plastic covers removed earlier.

- Bleeder Screws: Some DRZ400SMs have a water neck bleeder screw–if your bike lacks it, focus on the left radiator bleeder only.
